Satara and the amazing H1-3

  • In my opinion the best road in the Kruger National Park. The H1-3 runs from Satara Rest Camp to Tshokwane Picnic Site, and through an area of the park rich in game. The H1-3 is also a great place to find wild dogs, especially in the vicinity of the picnic site. From Tshokwane it follows the course of the river along which you will always be blessed with amazing sightings of elephant, kudu, leopard and of course the ever-present and prolific lion prides. About halfway between Tshokwane and Satara you will come across two beautiful dams, the Mazithi Dam and the Kumana Dam. These are great places to watch elephant swimming, see lions drinking and observe the abundance of water birds and waders which frequent these dams. Oh, and don't forget the hippos. All in all, it is a great road for game viewing. Perhaps I will see you there one of these fine days.

Satara was disappointing, the bungalows are in need of TLC but we were very comfortable in the bush camps. Thanks for watching.

Wonderful - you're absolutely right about remembering spots, trees, roads where you have great previous sightings!
What's the situation with the power cuts in the camps? How often are they, and so all camps have generators? Does the air con work on generators?

Thanks for the comment. We found that power cuts at camps near the border of Kruger - Pretoriuskop and Bergendal. Camps with their own generators were obviously unaffected.
