I think Yanna comes back strong and helps solidfy the frontcourt while the new players adjest to college ball. And Geno, who has shown he can play with 6, will keep her on the active roster if that's what she wants. Maybe loyalty is 'old school' in which case I'll take 'old school' any and every day. I’ve been hoping that Caroline would take a student coaching role and free up her slot. This path may be in the best interest of both Caroline and UConn. Concussions are cumulative, the more you have the easier it is to have the next one and the worse your long term prognosis is. I do think she could be a good coach, perhaps a career path for her.
I think UCONN can afford to give Ducharme a fifth season, provided that is what she wants to do and she is cleared medically to at least give it a shot. There are a bunch of players on the UCONN roster that could stay for five seasons, Azzi Fudd, Ice Brady, Jana el Alfy, Ayanna Patterson (will have missed two seasons in a row). UCONN has a three player class so far for 2025 and one open roster spot. There might be more of a numbers crunch in the following recruiting class provided there are zero transfers out, since there would only be 2-3 ships for the 2026 class (Fudd, Ducharme and depending what happens with the open slot in the 2025 class).
Sorry but just cannot agree with you regarding Caroline. This is an inherent risk of any sport. Personally I think UConn is keeping her to get her degree which she should receive this year. After I heard about turbulence last year causing her not to play I find it hard to believe any doctor would sign off on her to play again. One more jolt to her head could potentially be catastrophic to her. Is it really worth the risk? But unless a doctor says she cannot play again she is still part of the team and on scholarship. It will be interesting to see what happens when she graduates.
Ducharme will never play another minute for UConn…I think it’s nice they are allowing her to finish out her time at UConn and keep her scholarship. But she’s gone after graduation and will pursue something other than basketball.
