I think Coco needed a tough match to force her to raise her level before she played Navarro. She had easy matches going into this match. For a lot of players having all easy matches before having to play a top player is a disadvantage.

My view... Coco fell apart mentally when the pressure got turned up. She looked completely lost on the court - and was basically begging for help from her box. It was a really bad look. It will be interesting to see if this meltdown will follow her as the summer progresses - or if she will learn from this and turn things around.
Agreed. She knew she was being out matched. She showed her hand. She'll have to mature from this even when she's reached #2 on the circuit. Never show your hand.
It will follow her the rest of her career. She is inconsistent and not able to think for herself. She is no Serena.
Get real, Navarro was a National Champion at Maryland and ranked in the top 20. ESPN should give her some fricken credit. I’m sure Coco will bounce back.
They're giving her credit, but Coco is the better player. Her ranking and experience should have helped her get the win, but she was flat. Coco at her best is going to defeat Navarro at her best - for now anyway.

@antihero5203 is absolutely right! Navaro is a waaaay better player than ESPN and people in general are giving her credit for. I wasn't aware of Navaro before the grass this season. I watched her in one of the lead-up's to Wimby and took note, so much so that I placed a bet with the bookmakers for her to win Wimby or at least get to the final. The reason I put my money where my mouth is was because I saw a few specific things that impressed me;
1. She's one of the headiest players I've seen in a while.
2. She plays big points REALLY well.
3. Her game is really well suited for grass. I believe, (from what I could tell from tv) she hits with a grip similar to Fed's which is half-way between Eastern and Semi-Western which allows her to hit through the ball in ways that some other players may not quite enjoy and at the same time be able to spin to taste. Her forehand doesn't immediately look as impressive as lets say a Coco or Kvitova BUT make no mistake, she hits a HEAVY ball which is so under-rated mainly because its stops your opponent from attacking in the way they want to. I'll choose a heavy ball any day of the week over big hard-hitting forehand for that reason. You heard Brad talk about "baseline positioning," yes well there's a reason for that! a combination of depth, height over the net AND spin will do that to an opponent ...push them way back, i.e a heavy ball.
4. She plays a lot of doubles and is visibly comfortable at net. There was one point where she hit one of, if not the most difficult shot in tennis, the backhand overhead when Coco tried to lob her, that shot in and of itself wasn't the winner but it kept her in the point because she didn't panic, didn't try to do too much and placed it really well. She ended up winning the point!.
5. Lastly but not least ......Her FOOTWORK! People in general tend to make too big of a deal about 'athleticism but in my opinion not enough is made about footwork. Again Navaro can be compared to Fed in this respect because she has what I refer to as 'Lazy good' footwork in that she looks almost like she's in slow motion and that she's not exerting as much effort. She hardly ever looks off-balance or rushed and that's because of her natural anticipation and hours spent on footwork in practice. In my opinion she's a much better 'mover' than Coco, not faster but a better mover which is a totally different thing.
There are other reasons she won yesterday but these are five of the main one's and some of Coco's weaknesses were exposed.
Is Chris Evert Coco's hypewoman? I can't believe she said that Coco was the one expected to win after Iga getting knocked out. This is Iga's worst surface so who in their right mind would think Iga was going to win? More importantly, former Wimbledon Champion Rybakina is still alive in this tournament.
Gilbert received all the merit of Coco's improvement after Wimbledon last year but the truth IS Pere Riba the one Who helped her with that change.

Her groundstrokes are awful. The only reason she's been winning is because of athleticism and power. As soon these women realize that all you have to do is get her into long rallies until she sails the ball long or wide, she'll stop receiving all this praise. As a fan of Coco this is my observation,Coco broke down mentally nearing the end of the match and as she fell apart so did her game.She expected Brad to help her when as a player you should be able to handle tough situations and uncomfortable positions yourself.Yes her forehand may be a technical liability but it didn’t really appear to be a problem until the near end of the match so it’s both a mental and technical block that is hindering her forehand,she also had a low percentage of first serves and also double faulted on important points.She most likely thought that this match would be like the previous rounds where she would hit hard and rally until the person committed and Unforced Error but in this particular match that plan did not work and she became frantic when she realized it wasn’t going her way.She also was too predictable on the forehead side continually going cross court without making the adjustment to go down the line.She had a chance to possibly win the match but Emma was too consistent on the day.She also needs to take a hold on the amounts of emotions she projects on court because her opponent will use it to their advantage to break her down mentally,But all in all I believe Coco will take this match as a learning lesson and improve in the things she fell short on in the match and will come back with a vengeance.
@@michaelhall1664 she has handled situations in past matches and pull her way through because she got her mind focused, but again in my prior comment she has been knocked out every tournament this year, not because she played bad except for this time; but Brad should be teaching her as her coach improvements and not always be a base line player; she plays doubles have her throw in some variety: in my opinion he’s not the best coach for her now; I hope she does better at the OPEN, again my opinion!

My question is where is love for Navarro? A fellow American that was an NCAA champ as a fresh(wo)man? And now only after three or four years she's here. Asides, if Coco's forehand is a problem, that will surface in all the wrong pressurized moments, don't you think? Any faulty mechanics Gilbert maybe would be better advised to concentrate on while she's still young and impressionable, but would she or her parents be opened to it? She's already a millionaire pro who should be able to. Problem is Navarro is a billionaire pro. Forehands are harder than even one-handed backhands. Backhands are a more natural unwinding motion. So the better forehands come naturally if not having been worked on, naturally.
Coco's problem is that she's too NICE. She want's to be friends with every other player, which reminds me so much of Lebron James. She needs to find her Mamba mentality. She also plays far too many tourneys when compared with other players; plus doubles.

Brad Gilbert being Coco's coach don't have the authority I think to stop her from playing doubles which she does in most of these tournaments after her single's matches! With a lot of very talented players in the singles draw fatigue becomes a factor against talented players who don't necessarily play doubles or are not highly ranked! Most of Coco loses are a direct result of playing doubles at tournaments when she should concentrate on her singles matchups! Nobody knows exactly what goes on behind the scenes but a lot comments about her being overrated, technically flaws, ball placements in games etc..are far from her issues! Technical flaws can be corrected by changing the mechanics of delivery on her serve which kicks up too high! A lower toss might work! Mental breakdowns is what Coco needs to fix! Fatigue create brain fog despite your talent and the constant glances to her box during this game was a sure indicator! Coco have solid fundamentals as she came up through the junior ranks.. There's not much to tweek in Coco's game, but increase her power with weight training, keeping her ground strokes flatter and deeper and more risk on her serve! She never goes for it..

Nobody’s matches are critiqued more than Coco Gauff’s whether she wins or loses. Emma’s phenomenal but not a better player she just played better on this day. Coco will learn from this and be better prepared the next time they meet.
When you're the top ranked American of course you're game is going to be criticized. Her forehand is weak very weak for a world class player.

So they insinuated that regardless of top ranking she is critiqued more . You inferred from that, because she was a top ranked player, she would get critiqued more. Case in point, Iga just got upset and most of the most comments I see, oh she is not good on clay. So I guess you just underscored his point. @@stephenscafaria3389Yes her forehand needs work. But EVERY great player went through this same process needing to work on impriving various skills. Many of them won a GS early then had a point where they went 3-4 years before winning another GS. People thought they were done winning. But, they made adjustments gained experience & came back and won multiple more GS up to where Serena ended of winning 23 GS. Not predicting Coco will win 23 but just saying she has plenty time to fine tune her mental and physical skills to win multiple GS . Us fans need to give her time & not try to rush the process.

@@ToonLink240 Well here's how. Not that I agree, but a lot of narrative with her US Open win was not because she played well it was because her opponents played terrible. So essentially she was lucky.
What are you talking about. She's played that many top players because she makes it to the qtrs/Semis/Finals of most tournaments. Most young players don't get and opportunity to play that many top players.
As a top 5 player (now top 2) you only play top seeded players in the qtrs & Semis. You have to be good enough to get to the Qtrs, semis, finals. Second, yes she's loss to some top players but she's also beaten some too. Many want to act like Coco is 28 yrs old & not beating anyone. She just turned 20 yrs old a few months ago. She just started winning against top level talent very early. But she's still developing. She's not going to have a 7-0 or 6-1 record against top players at 20 years NO player has done that so early in their career. Stop putting such steep expectations on Coco. Even the Great No.1 players of the past did not really START being great & Consistent at tennis until later in their 20s. Around 23 or so. Stop unrealistically rushing Coco's progress. She's still grinding trying to perfect her physical & mental skill. She'll be fine and definitely will win her share of GS.

Coco needed to do a better job at compartmentalizing during the match. Forget about the technical, mentally she checked out & that was the true game changer.

I think it a mistake for Coco to change the coach, sorry to say it but you can clearly see it that there is not good chemistry between them, as she has a lot of character and energy she needs someone similar who can motivate her and bring the best out of her. Gilbert didn't address the elephant in the room. Gauffs extreme western grip on the forehand which doesn't work well on grass.

Well, I hear you about her western grip. But what you don't want to do with an elite athlete is make a drastic changes in her grip. You can really mess with the players progress. She's won many tournaments with that grip & has ascended to #2 in WTA. Overall that grip works for her. You don't want add something else for her to think about on each shot. It could set her back years trying change her grip. She's not that far off. Improving first serve and working on a Consistent forehand. Her backhand is great so her forehand doesn't have to be the best in tennis just needs to be confortqble enough with it to significantly reduce unforced forehand errors. That's it. She's going to get there. Every great elite player has a weakness that they have to work on. She'll be fine & will still win several GS. She will also win at least one career GS before her career ends.

You don't just change your grip because of the surface. That's what she uses. She can win with it on grass. The issue is she kept asking for help when she needs to figure it out herself. Brad can't help her, the adjustments have to come from her if the game plan isn't working. Players aren't helpless. But that just comes with time.
@@chillfactorfitness1243 She won 1 x1000 , 1xGS . Those are that really count. So not too many. She is is not really dominant on any like Swiatek, , she is young. There is planty of time to change things but she , in my opinion ,should change something and try to cut down on errors.
I think they need to work on communication as a team. In the first step when they tried to give Coco direction she asked them to stop then in the second set she spent most of it arguing with her box than playing point by point. You can’t dimiss them in the first set then plea for direction when you’ve put yourself in a deficit.
Maybe at the time when she dismissed them she did not need their assistance and was fuddled as a result? She did mention that everyone is not on the same page. I would have hoped this would have been meted out prior to her playing unless someone went off script.
I think a sports psychologist would be good for her to stay mentally sound on crucial moments because the forehand wasn’t a major issue until she was on the brink of defeat and was about to lose the match.
Coco is wrong, if she’s blowing off her team when she’s winning, then turns around crying for help when she’s losing! Not good!

My take is Brad will drift out of Coco's coaching staff ASAP. Coco and her parents want to win, Brad wants to build her game. The game plan was this is going to be a cake walk until the semi's when you will get real competition. That is why she looked anxious, she never thought she would lose to Emma.
“I’m not an analytics guy” makes Brad sound super old school. He didn’t know his player’s opponent, he didn’t have a plan B, he didn’t plan how he would communicate with Coco during the match and he hasn’t helped Coco improve her biggest weakness which is her forehand. The #2 player in the WTA needs better coaching and preparation than this.
What happen was, when they were rigging the draws, they forgot how well Emma can play. Since BG was hired, Gauff has been getting cupcake draws every tournament. Her opponents do not belong anywhere near or on a tennis court. That is how she gets deep into the draws. As soon as she plays a descent tennis player, she loses. Like Kenin, I guess Emma will also no longer be a part of her draws.
3 itf level players in the first three rounds
Up until 3 years ago, coaching was "banned," so I don't give any credit to Coco saying that she was looking for more from her coaches. For this particular match, she needed to figure it out and raise her level, and she didn't play well enough.
Beyond this match: Sabalenka, Ons, Pegula, and Iga were out of the running. The great players pounce when the draw opens up like that. The ATP Big 3 did it all the time. Murray did it at WM 2016

all I hear in the comments was " she had a bad day" you have to look closer to see what emma was actually doing. SHe changed tactics and it allowed her to avenge her loss in auckland to coco. Alot of slicing to the western grip forehand. And forehand slice approaches freaked coco out.

So sad to see how allowing coaching has dimished pro tennis and allowed the non thinking player to have a high ran king endorsements and money. The reason is Coco did not increase her intensity. She broke down mentally.

Exactly, I see comments here saying she just had one off bad day she'll be fine and going after panel for criticising her. Point is, she keeps losing same way , going after her bad forehand. It's not improved. Players who play against her know this. Hence struggling against top 30.

It is hard to change a grip that you have utilized for years but what you can do is improve upon it, and that indeed is what has happened in the past few months regarding the forehand side.

@@Nike5221 I see your point but there is a difference between a serving tweak and a forehand grip change let’s take Iga for example if Iga was to take her full western forehand grip and changed it to an eastern grip it would take her a while to adjust because she’s not used to such an extreme change.
She didn't need to play at a higher level, she needed to mix it up. It's not about baseline tennis all the time, she has to mix it up, make the opponent unsure. She plays doubles FFS!

Coco’s serve really sucked that day and she made a bunch of unforced errors, particularly on her return game. That was why she lost. Plus, Emma Navarro really took the power shots to Coco.

I watched this match and it was very clear to me that Coco had no change of tactics, Emma was using the slice to disrupt her rhythm and was very accurate with her shots, even taking power off her shots to get accuracy with deep shots to the back of the court. In short Emma had too much variety in her play and Coco couldn't deal with it, Coco prefers power players who blast the ball at her. Emma's serve isn't hard but she gets great placement on it so its a bit awkward to return it cleanly, I don't think her serve was broken in the match.

It all came down to the western forehand grip compounded by a long takeback. That doesn’t work well on grass. BG was right on the serve approach.

Emma was a better player. Gauff was so close, but that happens to her sometimes - it seems to be a personality problem. Also, the media is a big factor, they are so anxious to have the next Serena that they made her the favorite in any tournament and she is not.
I don’t like this new rule that allows the players to get advice from their box. The players should figure it out for themselves. I watched yesterday and this guy was waving and leaning over to give advice, it looked ridiculous, I wouldn’t like it playing against a player that was constantly getting instructions

I agree you are not going to win every match even if it was “winnable” just take into account what you did wrong as an opponent and do better next time .

Coco's haters would say that Chris and John were giving Brad a hard time because they've been hyping Coco up for at least 5 years and her results don't justify it, so Chris and John are embarrassed and want answers from Brad...

Show me the 12 minute video of analyzing Serena 5 years into her breakthrough considering Coco's was 5 years ago at Wimbledon. If we say 1999, that would make it 2004. It doesn't exist. The amount of hype and interest surrounding Coco is disproportional. Sure, she's one of the better players now, but she's not a GOAT. She will win a few majors but she will also lose a lot of majors. To dissect it to this degree for a 4th round loss is just mindblowing.
I think it comes with the territory because it was 5 years ago at this tournament when she burst onto the scene. Because of that people, we the public may expect way more from her. She seems stagnant.

i am a big Coco fan, but in this match Navarro was able to assert herself. It happens. Coco didn't handle it great, but she is 20 years old! I have confidence that Coco will move forward and become a great champion. Give credit to Navarro, she plays fearlessly.
It happens. Coco will learn from this and will continue to improve to a multi-Major Winner!
Coco needs to have a game plan to push through . She needs to have game plan B.
Watch Carlos when he is chocked he begins to shoot and volley at the net ! So she needs to switch up when her opponent is beating her at her own game plan.
Roger Federer also said he had to reinvent his game as everyone knew it and studied it and wanted to beat him. So he switched it up, she needs to figure this quick and have a switch up and disruptive play which she always does .
Coco had no reason to play as poorly as she played !

@antihero5203 is absolutely right! Navaro is a waaaay better player than ESPN and people in general are giving her credit for. I wasn't aware of Navaro before the grass this season. I watched her in one of the lead-up's to Wimby and took note, so much so that I placed a bet with the bookmakers for her to win Wimby or at least get to the final. The reason I put my money where my mouth is was because I saw a few specific things that impressed me;
1. She's one of the headiest players I've seen in a while.
2. She plays big points REALLY well.
3. Her game is really well suited for grass. I believe, (from what I could tell from tv) she hits with a grip similar to Fed's which is half-way between Eastern and Semi-Western which allows her to hit through the ball in ways that some other players may not quite enjoy and at the same time be able to spin to taste. Her forehand doesn't immediately look as impressive as lets say a Coco or Kvitova BUT make no mistake, she hits a HEAVY ball which is so under-rated mainly because its stops your opponent from attacking in the way they want to. I'll choose a heavy ball any day of the week over big hard-hitting forehand for that reason. You heard Brad talk about "baseline positioning," yes well there's a reason for that! a combination of depth, height over the net AND spin will do that to an opponent ...push them way back, i.e a heavy ball.
4. She plays a lot of doubles and is visibly comfortable at net. There was one point where she hit one of, if not the most difficult shot in tennis, the backhand overhead when Coco tried to lob her, that shot in and of itself wasn't the winner but it kept her in the point because she didn't panic, didn't try to do too much and placed it really well. She ended up winning the point!.
5. Lastly but not least ......Her FOOTWORK! People in general tend to make too big of a deal about 'athleticism but in my opinion not enough is made about footwork. Again Navaro can be compared to Fed in this respect because she has what I refer to as 'Lazy good' footwork in that she looks almost like she's in slow motion and that she's not exerting as much effort. She hardly ever looks off-balance or rushed and that's because of her natural anticipation and hours spent on footwork in practice. In my opinion she's a much better 'mover' than Coco, not faster but a better mover which is a totally different thing.
There are other reasons she won yesterday but these are five of the main one's and some of Coco's weaknesses were exposed.
If i were a pro player, no way i would let my coach also be a commentator, at least not in a tournament i am playing in. I dont want to hear my coach critiquing me to the press. That critique and post match analysis should stay withiin the camp, to me. And i don't think its good for the player's morale to hear her coach deconstructing her game on a TV show minutes after a match.
Why the controversy? She got beat by a better player!

Gaffe won't defend all those hard court points coming up. Other players won't let her. Such glaring mental & technical holes in her game which become amplified under pressure whenever she faces top tier opponents.
Some do not have that unless they are able to maintain a degree of consistency....
Playing spectacular is not always ok, play it safe is much better. Be patient
Coco needs to CHANGE what she eats.
That is where mental continuity is born and flourish.
“She is supposed to?” What kind of comment was that? Why can’t they give credit to Emma? She improved so much. Grass is a very different surface. Just because she won a hard court slam doesn’t mean she can produce the same result on a different surface. Americans grow up on clay and hard. She is not used to that surface. Leave them alone.
Navarro is underrated. Coco did not help herself but she did not ‘beat herself’. She was beaten.
Not a bad glimpse into the workings of the match and how you think about the stats and adjust your game. At the end of the day the player has to dig. Coco will be back and will win this title.

They didn't even mention once about Coco's forehand problem - she totally lost confidence on her forehand so obvious.
When it was announced last summer that Brad had started working with Coco, he said that everyone he knows texted him saying "FIX THE FOREHAND, FIX THE FOREHAND!!!".
He said publicly that he didn't even mention the word 'forehand' to Coco because he wanted to focus on her strengths.... so all American pundits know there's no point asking Brad about the forehand.
I have been saying coco has to improve her forhand players will attack that weekness in her game

By comparison Coco was just horrible. H*ck I am not a tennis player and Coco would have made me look good that day. All that talent just going down the drain. Get rid of your coaches.

I picked Navarro to win Wimbledon before the start. She’s a cool cookie.
From my perspective she wasn't very mentally tough and seemed to be searching for answers and forehand was not working. All credit to her opponent for playing a great match. Personally I'm happy for Navarro and have been rooting for her the whole time

Truth is that her forehand is not that good and it breaks down further under pressure (Venus W. had a similar problem ). This of course is relatively speaking but at this level every weakness will be exploited.

Coco had the break and played a bad service game next. She gave away the momentum and Emma belief grew. Coco didn’t maximize her chances at the beginning. When you are playing a top player you can’t give them breathing room.
I know that Darren Cahill has talked about Simona Halep after some of jer losses on ESPN, but i don't remember him ever being this critical of her. Brad went too far on this one. Makes me wonder if she already told him he's out and he's going scorched earth. But that's not the way to go if you want another coaching job.
I think Coco's mental and emotional component is not quite in there..As a coach you must be attuned to player needs and prepared to make adjustments at any time..If after a match, the player breakdown happened mentally and not physically or technically, you may have to adjust your balance to reflect a concentration on the mental/emotional component..
Finding the right balance of the perfomace components for your player is how you demonstrate your expertise..Brad Gilbert is an experienced and fine coach .. His record speak for itself..He will organize a comprehensive performance components allows to maximize Coco's development..So, rest assured that Coco will be fine..She is going through transitional adjustments periodization..
Making 70% and winning 60% of those is .7*.6 = .42, i.e., 42%.
Making 50% and winning 80% of those is .5*.8 = .4, i.e., 40%.
So, Andy Murray is wrong, and it would better to make 70% first serve and win 60% of those. Not to mention that scenario one is also much more realistic and practical.

Hopefully Coco can learn from this experience and handle it more maturely next time. Was really disappointed in her attitude and blaming the coach for not giving her more to go on. It was only fairly recently you could even get coached from the sideline. She should have given credit to her opponent for being awesome that day instead of acting so poorly. I understand she was frustrated but you gotta have better sportsmanship than that at this level for crying out loud.

Honestly not sure Brad is not quite the coach for coco. Brad is highly philosophical tennis wise, we need a technical coach for coco moving forward. US open was amazing yes… but after this year I think it’s time to reconsider.

Everyone on tour knows that Coco's forehand is her weakness. For her to be #1, and a dominant #1 player, she needs to make adjustments on her forehand; specifically, shorten her take-back on her swing, it's too long. Combine this, with her extreme western grip, and the result is an inconsistent contact point on her forehand. All the greats, Roger, Rafa, Novak, had to make adjustments in their game (to compete with each other really). Can Coco - will Coco - make the necessary adjustments?
Emma played great! Coco is so athletic yet she plays passive and seems to lack instincts on court.
