I noticed that as well. As a Colombian American that supports Colombia, I noticed they took it as a training. The one thing I noticed is that USA plays too technical without enough swagger. Every other major sport in the USA has ballers. Unfortunately the USMNT is not one of them.

Spain were playing their c team with key player like Rodri, Carvajal, Pedri were out. The only starter was Laporte when facing Colombia. Germany were in their worst moment on a losing streak to Belgium, Ukraine and Poland. As well as Hansi Flick lost the dressing room a little bit before the Ukraine game. Colombia faced them at their weakest while having Neuer, Tah, Andrich, Kroos, Wirtz, and Mittlestadt all missing. This was before Nagelsmann took over and is making them better.

I keep seeing American channels saying Colombia as if the were an inferior nation in soccer terms, have any of these RUclips channels seen the match record of both teams?, and yes, this is the best generation of US soccer players but it is still inferior to some of the South American teams, Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and probably Ecuador have better players overall. I understand this is 90% the coach fault but you can’t underestimate the teams you are playing against especially if this team has such a game record against you. I hope the US gets a better coach because the players should be able to do more, and the media changes that mentality, nothing good will come out of this.

Yesterday, I watched Croatia vs Portugal, 2-1 Croatia. That game SHOULD be instructive for us. Portugal oozes with talent -- they are better on paper than Croatia with tremendous depth.. Croatia is better than us -- they do have two Man City players, and Modric -- but is also kinda like us -- a smattering of Champions League level players and an assortment of others. What did Croatia play? A possession-cedeing counter attacking 3-5-3, which morphed into 5-4-1 on defense. The discipline they showed in establishing defensive control against a speedy technically proficient great ball striking team was phenomenal. It was a thing of beauty to watch throughout when you saw Portugal get possession at the halfway line, and in just a few seconds -- BAM!! -- wingers to the back, mids covering the gaps, and Portugal grinds to a halt. And guess what? Portugal, Diego Jota, scored, ON THE COUNTER, when that Croatian disciplined defensive approach broke down as it inevitably will from time to tome.
Watching us play against Columbia and that wide wide WIDE 4 in the back and all that space was just appalling against this highly technical very fast Colombian side. The through ball on the first goal completely exposed it. There are rumors floating around that GGG is experimenting with a 3 in the back system. Well, maybe the time is now. Because if we set up against Brazil like we did against Colombia, expect the same old same old.
Other comments about our match. Did you notice how Columbia crowded out our right side when we had the ball, but had no problem leaving Jedi wide open on the left. They WANTED us to get the ball to him, I bet because they reasoned all he would do is go forward and cross. Shutting down McKinney was more important to them, and they were right. Scally I though was OK, and he did a reasonable job hanging with Diaz. Johnny was good. Why Reyna didn't play 90 made ZERO sense; the guy has gotten very little game time, he needs minutes. Agree that Turner should sit out Brazil. What was Weah doing at the back when he gave the ball away for that goal? Evidence of the lack of defensive discipline.

Let me tell you, the thing about South America football is that is not just about the tactics, the mentality and the technique... Its also about the passion. I saw a Colombia team with fire in their hearts vs a souless USMNT.
Please be more wise before speaking next time, and make sure you understand your opponents before trying to criticize. Hi, TM. Yesterday, I posted a comment, basically "absolving" the coach because he is a product of the US "soccer" system.
But, after listening to your seven takeaways, which are very to the point and practical, and which provide lots of food for thought, you are correct and make good points. And I need to think differently.
One thing I probably forgot to mention yesterday, is that, "playing in Europe makes better players," is overblown and overestimated. If the purpose of player development is to create a sense of team and team play, wandering about from team to team does not allow for that, especially for younger players. Too much uncertainty and moving around. Perhaps later on in the player's skill and self- confidence growth. Fierce competition for playing time, for the obvious reasons, could contribute to stultifying a player's growth.
To your point that the team seems to play slow, you are right. That is probably because the wingers don't have sufficient speed. The mold should be the Brazilian left and right wingers. When they take control of the ball, something is going to happen. Or the Argentinian Messi, Pedernera, or DiStéfano model. They have been known for their speed and explosiveness off the block, and ball control. Thanks again for the podcast.

@Ronaldoluiznazario recent history between these 2 teams shows how the game was going to turn out. I want the usmnt to do good but I think we seriously need to get rid of the gaffer. We are wasting a generation with this bum at the helm

I'd rather see Sean Johnson in net than Matt. At least he is going to look like an actual soccer goalkeeper and understands the rules of the game like maybe don't get a handball as a GK.

Yes, you’re disrespecting Colombia. You clearly have zero knowledge about soccer my man. Colombia hasn’t lost for the past 23 games. If they beat Germany, Spain, Brazil, Japan, and Uruguay, what the hell makes you think they weren’t going to beat the USMNT? Also, historically, Colombian has won 14 games, and the USA 6 games. Let that sink in.

@@TacticalManagerWinning is Winning so the score doesn't matter and I feel that's what the other comment is implying. Argentina, Colombia and Uruguay are the best teams in South America and are TOP 5 TEAMS IN THE WORLD as well.

You're not disrespecting Colombia??? We just smoked you at home 5-1. As of right now Colombia isn't just the best team in South America, we're the best team, period. And no, I'm not saying we're the best team ever. I'm not saying we'll absolutely win Copa America and make it to the World Cup. But if you look at the numbers, the las time Colombia lost a game was in 2022. We're, as of humiliating the US 5-1, we're the only team that has won every single game in 2024, so far. And, we played with our A team only in the first half, when we're most of our goals scored? In 11 minutes with our B team. In 2023 we beat, Brazil, Spain, France and Germany. Do you think if the US faces Colombia in the actual Copa America, playing our A team the entire time, the US will do any better?

We learned that Gregg still hasn't noticed his target man scheme means we can't score and the other team will mob our defensive third; because they know our 9 won't try to score on them, so they'll cheat up all day and never get punished. We learned that Gregg still hasn't figured out that Pulisic can't play in attack buildup, that he can only play the 9 facing the keeper with the all down at his feet. We learned, once again, what it looks like when those first two bullet points of Gregg's non-education in professional football leave us effectively two players short-handed against a for-real football squad.

I share that defeated feeling brother. We can't keep going like this. When Berhalter was suspended or whatever they called it, we saw coaching that complimented the player's strengths. It was a bright glimpse into what this team COULD be and it gave us all optimism. Now it just feels like we are watching the death of something. I am not ready to watch this team become a doormat for the CONMEBOL teams in this upcoming tournament.

Colombia loves to put a huge pressure on their rivals to recover the ball as soon as possible. The LAST thing you want to do to break that pressure is to advance through the center of the field like the US team did, they did exactly the same fatal mistake at least 5 times and ended up conceding 3 goals because of that. You cannot play like that against a CONMEBOL team that is in top form and has not lost in their last 22 games.

Intensity! Colombia came out wanting to make a point. The US looked like they were out for a nice workout. I'm not sure how much you can actually tell from a match like this. I am going defend Turner a little though. When your defense is giving the ball back and making stupid mistakes in the final 3rd and you are defending point blank shots basically, you aren't going to have a great day. That being said I think it is time to rotate away from Turner, as much as I love him, he is not in form. I'm not sure if any of this group of goalkeepers are.
