Snyder shot this film on 4-perf 35mm film (Academy) with a 1.37:1 / 1.33:1 aspect ratio. So you’re seeing the full image and nothing was cropped. This is close enough to fill IMAX screens with the 1.43:1 aspect ratio. The trailers in 2016/2017 were cropped to 1.85:1.
Yup. And since this film is dialogue heavy he didn’t use IMAX cameras since they create a lot of noise. It looks like they emulated the look and feel of an imax camera as well with the lenses they used.
@@railerswim True. Not to mention how heavy those cameras are and how expensive the film stock is. Shooting a film entirely in IMAX would be a difficult challenge. To me personally the IMAX look is all about the shallow depth of field and I’ve seen films that were close to that look - shot with spherical lenses.
By chance I have used my off days for this week without even realizing the SynderCut will be out then. So, I guess you could say.....I'm a happy camper.
The wide aspect ratio actually cuts the top and bottom of the screen when shot on film. Snyder is not cutting anything with this format. To understand it watch the new BvS 4k blueray ad.
It was shot for the IMAX aspect ratio in mind, to give the full frame experience. The widescreen is the Cropped format. The Square format gives you more screen footage. For Example , Cut a Square in Half and it gives you a rectangle. Cut the Square format from top and bottom and crop it in and you get widescreen. So you actually lose footage with widescreen.
It was not shot on IMAX. Zack has confirmed this on IGN fanfest. He shot on film with this aspect ratio because for a film of this scale it was perfect to fit everything on the screen.

However when I see the iteration of Darkseid... his look, voice and setup does make him appear and feel more menacing than Thanos (who was pretty ruthless himself).
Every movie in the world is made in this aspect ratio jaby, bcoz while filming any movie /scene the directors have a monitor which is in a box shape so that they can examine it . Later while in post production they chop off the top and the bottom so that it fit TV screens.
You’re actually seeing more of the movie with that format, that but Snyder meant it to be watched in IMax. I like that classic cinema era approach and with the first opinions of the movie from the early screenings I’m not worried at all
Martian Manhunter shape shifted into Martha Kent. The cinematic music is by Ursine Vulpine-Renzokuken. This music makes it so so enigmatic cinematic brilliance. A film with epic dramatic emotional music emanates greatness. Great music makes it so much beautiful.
About the format it’s because the movie was shot on IMAX format, but not with imax cameras it was with Arri film cameras, not digital, it was on 70mm film, so it’s like filming in full frame not like 35 mm crop format, so to fill all the screen it needs to be cropped because of the format filmed.
So you're still wondering if they can make a format that fits your TV? As far as I know, most good quality modern TVs have settings where it actually zooms a video "fit to width". And just in case you still don't get the point of a square-ish screen, let me get a shot at explaining. The eye or a lens sees the world through a circular hole. Manufacturing flat things such as camera sensors are most efficient when making quadrilateral shapes (4-sided shapes at 90 degrees at all angles). Humans and other creatures with binocular vision see the world through a near circle (two eyeballs make you see a little bit wider than taller). It's basically a circle. You almost see as much of the world vertically as horizontally. Letterbox or widescreen format is a false assumption of what a better view is just because we deal with things that are on a relatively flat plane like a room. That's because we don't find the ceiling and your feet that much interesting. However. The lens still captures everything in a near-circle just the same. A camera's sensor may be made as a wide rectangle. But that's just physically omitting what the lens is receiving. Even if you cut the lens into a rectangle, it's still curved towards a single point in space. Zack captured as much as the lens could give which is a circular view captured by a quadrilateral sensor. Go ahead, try to draw the biggest rectangle inside a circle. It's a square. That's how much data he wanted to put into the screen.
In the new ratio, nothing is cut out from the sides. Now you get to see the full picture, from up and down, that was cut, is added, so the ratio changes.
An explanation from a novice (me): Take the now common widescreen 16:9 ratio, then add more screen to the top and bottom to make a seemingly perfect square. Essentially that's the IMAX screen ratio. You saw this with selected footage on TDKR. Also, the Knightmare scene in BvS did this. If you saw BvS on IMAX or AMC's RPX screen, you might have noticed the screen grow taller going into that scene. To me, it gave me the effect that my eyes grew wider. Maybe that's what Achara experienced. A vivid dramatic effect.
The movie was actually chopped horizontally for the aspect ratio. So what you have now is actually the original full shot. You can always crop it to wide-screen format :)
The widescreen will cut out the top and bottom. For example BvS UE in widescreen cut out the parademons in the sky during the Knightmare scene but the IMAX didn't.
Snyder in a recent interview told that ...he will be BACK...but he told the studio isn't interested in this thing anymore....But he'll be back if the fans ask abt it so that's why #restorethesnyderverse
Was shot in 1.43:1 like every movie, movies are copped to fit 16.9 or even wider, this one way kept at 1.43 , not copped to preserver top and bottom so in the end we technically get more footage but black bars on side
A wide screen movie would actually crop the top and bottom of the frame. All that has really happened is that instead of having black bars on the top and bottom of the screen which you get on all most all wide screen movies, even on a 16:9 tv, the bars will now be on the sides giving us the full frame of the image. I saw an interview where Zack said that he didn’t use imax cameras because they don’t record audio. If you watch the dark knight by Christopher Nolan you’ll see the black bars change for different scenes because only some are shot on imax while the rest weren’t, which is more distracting then having them stay in one place for the whole film. Give it a chance I bet after 5 mins you won’t even notice them. Either way enjoy the movie!!
@GETJaby the movies are originally shot in this aspect ratios... They are cropped from top & bottom to fit the general aspect ratio of 16:9 .. However if movies are not cropped all will be in the same square format
@GETJaby He shot it in full frame. This was because it shows more of the footage that is on the top and the bottom. As you know, a widescreen image is simply a cropped up version of the full frame one. What we got back in 2017 was a cropped version. In this one, we will get to see more inside the frame!
So when any movie which is shot using a 70mm film (analogue instead of digital) this is the original ratio and it is later cropped to widescreen aspect ratio in post production. So you sacrifice the top and bottom of your shot frame. Here it’s just presented in the same ratio as shot.
The BluRay version will come in May which will be 16:9 widescreen. It'll just chop up and down footage of the movie that's why Zack is releasing it in Imax aspect ratio so that we see his framing/vision well.
Snyder wanted the movie to shot that way which he did and it was primarily intended for IMAX viewing only. And IMAX viewing ratio with its large screens are at a ratio of 1.43.1 aspect ratio hence this film was made to meet a 1.33.1 ratio and hence the bands are to the left and right
Hey dude! Many films for decades have been shot Super 35 (pre digital, essentially a big square AR) and then "matted" down to 1.85:1 or 2.40:1 in post for theatrical release. Back in the DVD days when you had 'Fullscreen' (blech) and 'Widescreen' options, that Full Screen was usually the widescreen image with the sides cropped off (they would then pan it back and forth appropriately, hence the other term for it being 'pan and scan'). However on rare occasion, the Full Screen release would be 'Open Matte,' which was just the full on 4:3 frame released from before the matte took place, however while having more information would often show unintended things like the boom mic hanging over top. To this day, shooting a big 4:3 frame or even 1.78:1 and then matting down to full 2.40:1 framing in post is generally the standard. This cut of JL is essentially protecting the full raw square frame that's shot which doesn't require being shot on IMAX cameras (though there is probably still some slight cropping and matting from what was shot on the day to keep unwanted things out of the top and bottom). He had planned to matte this down to 1.66:1 initially as a compromise with WB, but now it seems he has full carte blanche with all of his artistic choices. While the IMAX we have at the Burbank 16 is I believe a 'Lie-Max,' the true IMAX screens would show stuff like the IMAX sections of The Dark Knight (and the full Snyder Cut) in this full 1.43:1 aspect ratio, which were his goals to someday see this in its full glory on those screens.
Yeah, totally agree with Achara that the aspect ratio adds to the cinematic feel of the movie! The DC characters are epic gods and the format helps making them feel huge and larger than life!
Maybe martian manhunter was waiting or observing for such a event like the steppenwolf invasion or zod invasion to see meta humans around him and got a chance to expose himself as an alien
I didnt know it was going to be shown in the square format too, I thought it was just the trailers trying to be funky...now I am curious as to how much of a difference it makes to the viewing experience.

Just an FYI... the "square format" is because it's filmed IMAX style. In other words, you get to see even more image than WIDESCREEN, because it shows more image at the top and bottom... Zack talked about it in detail in one of his interviews a few weeks back.
Its the full frame of the film it was shot on... without croping the picture and losing any information... You can go with your zoom option on your TV to have the croped standard picture🤙
To be fair... if you guys didn't know about it.... The footage isn't get chopped off from the side, its being added on top and bottom. That is why its looks squarish and give a feel that its missing something on the side. Basically you are gaining footage and not losing any. in.ign.com/feature/155221/why-the-snyder-cut-of-justice-league-isnt-widescreen There are some references as well to make you understand. On March 23rd, we'll also get Batman v Superman IMAX Remaster with the same aspect ratio. As for filling up the screen.... to make it 16:9.... I think you can zoom in a bit or change aspect ratio on the tv, but I don't know how it will look. Not really knowledgable on that. But I will definitely try doing that at one point to see how it looks. Thanks for all your content guys.
I agree with her. There's something cinematic about a film's aspect ratio not conforming with your screen. It reminds you of where you should be viewing it (in this case, at an IMAX). ''The frame matters more than your viewing device' type of vibe. Gives the film majesty.
Not the first movie in this format.... Watch french movie called Mommy (released in 2014).... Even this movie was released in 1:1 ratio.... And also I suggest everyone to watch this movie.... It's good....

This movie is gonna be epic
In the new ratio, nothing is cut out from the sides. Now you get to see the full picture, from up and down, that was cut, is added, so the ratio changes.
If we also get a Blu Ray Release on this EPIC story OMFG.
It's coming out sometime in May. No specific day has yet been announced, just that it's in May.
@@ignitetheinferno1858 HELL YEAH MY BIRTHDAY.
An explanation from a novice (me):
Take the now common widescreen 16:9 ratio, then add more screen to the top and bottom to make a seemingly perfect square.
It's just the beginning the new goal is to #RestoreTheSnyderverse 🤖🤡🧜♂️🦸♂️⚡🦇👺👸
#RestoreTheSnyderverse 💗
The movie was actually chopped horizontally for the aspect ratio. So what you have now is actually the original full shot. You can always crop it to wide-screen format :)
This movie is going to be EPIC!!!!!!
The widescreen will cut out the top and bottom. For example BvS UE in widescreen cut out the parademons in the sky during the Knightmare scene but the IMAX didn't.
Did anyone check out the red eyes of Martha....gosh....what was THAT!!!
That was Martian manhunter in disguise
Snyder in a recent interview told that ...he will be BACK...but he told the studio isn't interested in this thing anymore....But he'll be back if the fans ask abt it so that's why #restorethesnyderverse
#restorethesnyderverse
I hope you guys seen towards the end of the trailer where Martha Kent had red eyes!!!!! That was clearly Martian Manhunter!!!!!
Absolutely Epic!
You guys should check out Zack snyder's recent New York times interview. It's interesting.
..."complete fantasy". Hermoso. 100% de acuerdo.
Was shot in 1.43:1 like every movie, movies are copped to fit 16.9 or even wider, this one way kept at 1.43 , not copped to preserver top and bottom so in the end we technically get more footage but black bars on side
There's a cameo of martian manhunter...
So, Here we've got 7th jl member playing his part side by side..
I highly urge people to go to a real 70mm/laser capable IMAX theater to see this when it finally gets a theatrical run.
1:57 they face watching lol this movie gonna be awesome!!!!
Am big fan of Superman since I was kid. ❤️❤️❤️
waiting for snyder cut long time. zack snyder ke jai ho. #restorethesnyderverse
u think we didn't get that DBS ref. but we did!..
Yesssss 😢😢😢😢😢😢👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Yes
If you watch the video Martha scene, that maybe Martian Manhunter.
Zack Snyder loved the idea of Martian Manhunter in Man of steel movie
Yeah, totally agree with Achara that the aspect ratio adds to the cinematic feel of the movie! The DC characters are epic gods and the format helps making them feel huge and larger than life!
Maybe martian manhunter was waiting or observing for such a event like the steppenwolf invasion or zod invasion to see meta humans around him and got a chance to expose himself as an alien
It was all shot on film, so it’s in that aspect ratio
5 goosebumps.
I didnt know it was going to be shown in the square format too, I thought it was just the trailers trying to be funky...now I am curious as to how much of a difference it makes to the viewing experience.
"i have a Second CHANCE. i am not gonna *waste it."*
The trailer gave me goosebumps♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Two more days ill be watching this movie all day !!!
6:55 - “Hey HBO, I was expecting ZSJL but I got Tom & Jerry instead ?”
3:18 Achara is like - Ya you have been so lovely 🤣 in good or bad way ✌️
#RestoreTheSnyderVerse 🙏
#ForAutumn ❤️
That's IMAX format(not in IMAX cam)and we can see more
See the BvS new trailer...you can see that what's the different..
He Shot in that way... didn't chopped
I'm glad if you know what you read about Snyder went through...
You can see the top and bottom is more screen than most...we are getting more..
See the Steppenwolf armour...the CGI is the best of all...the music ... Darkseid voice... everything 🙏🙏🙏🙏
That's the power of Zack Snyder
#RestoreTheSnyderVerse
He didn't cut the left and right frame of the movie he added top and bottom frame which was cut in josstic leage In a way we are gaining the frames.
I was going to watch the movie this week. Will have to wait another week as my mom is undergoing a surgery.
Just here to see archara Kirk
It's in that format so that it fills the imax screening..n shows the complete frame that was captured...so u r missing any frame that was cut.
Just an FYI... the "square format" is because it's filmed IMAX style. In other words, you get to see even more image than WIDESCREEN, because it shows more image at the top and bottom... Zack talked about it in detail in one of his interviews a few weeks back.
😍3 more days guys. I'm bursting from the hype
Basically you are gaining footage and not losing any.
in.ign.com/feature/155221/why-the-snyder-cut-of-justice-league-isnt-widescreen
There are some references as well to make you understand.
