I don’t agree with what she’s saying about being a female there’s tons of females in the industry doing it with huge audiences and huge fans like Amy Lee and floor and Lizzy and the list goes on and on and on, you’re making excuses lady maybe they didn’t like you
Two of my favorite artists, Aimee and Fagen/Becker (Steely Dan), melded together in a great cover rendition. A nice surprise. Loved the story about Donald Fagen explaining what the song means. Aimee has always been a fine storytelling in concert. I'd love to know if Fagen had a hand in kicking her off the bill, or if he was out of the loop and it was strictly a management or promoter decision.
Aimee is the real deal. Sooooo talented. Her voice is deamy and melodic. Her storytelling on stage here is captivating and authentic. Her true Boston fans know her ability to rise above the music industry's BS.....Shame on Steely Dan. Their loss. Our gain....especially with this spot-on version of Brooklyn Owes A Charmer, delivered in true Aimee Mann style! BBF. Boston.
Nice one Amy! Thank you for telling us the true meaning of Brooklyn. Awsome cover as well! Always loved Can't Buy a Thril. Amy this cover puts you in the Goddess class of female performers. Outstanding!
Song is exactly as described in the book 'Steely Dan FAQ' by Anthony Robustelli. He details the lyrics and story in each and every song. They were music geniuses. Aimee's got it right here. A great song, and great cover. BF
I got my tickets to see Steely Dan way back in 2020, and Steve Winwood was slated to open for them. Couldn't wait! Then Covid hit. Tour postponed. Then Winwood dropped out. But then Aimee was announced--whoo hoo! But then she was pulled. Damn! Two years later, I finally got to see SD, but with an opener that I hadn't heard of. They were good, but they could never measure up to SW or AM in my book.
We don’t see this as often as we should anymore - authentic talent on clear display without apology and without commercialization, sexualized BS, market driven packaging, and auto tuned ripped at the knees jeans delivery of the disposable flavor of the month “ artistry”. Thanks for giving us something real! Can’t Buy A Thrill is a gem and Brooklyn is one of its highlights. Nicely done!
Great performance by Aimee and her bandmates. I saw Steely Dan on their 1974 "Pretzel Logic" tour, and at each concert they performed either "Brooklyn" or "Any Major Dude (Will Tell You)" -- but never both. And Donald Fagen graciously let 19 year-old percussionist Royce Jones sing the lead on both (as well as on "Dirty Work," which was performed at every show on that tour).
Aimee Mann still exists! Steely Dan does not and has not since Walter passed on. Having Aimee open for the residue Fagan calls Steely Dan may have upstaged them. Seems really awkward to have dropped her though after advertizing. I saw SD right before losing Walter and Steve Winwood opened for them. So glad to have seen Fagan and Becker together. IMHO Fagan should tour as a solo project and do a few SD songs and many of his solo project songs but should no longer tour as Steely Dan now that Becker is gone. It is false advertizing! I had planned on seeing SD based on Aimee Mann as an opening act. I backed out once Aimee waa dropped!
Aimee would be a match made in heaven for a Steely Dan tour. I mean, what music do I use to test out new speakers or headphones, I go straight for the Magnolia soundtrack and Aja. Would have been great. I think Donald Fagen was underestimating or misunderstanding his own fan base which is strange after so long.
The neighbor was bitching about the Mets? In 1969? They won the effin' World Series! Judging from the lyrics of "Brooklyn," maybe he was bitching that he isn't Tom Seaver... 😕😂
What an A-hole move on his part! I bought Aja when I was in high school ‘77 and have added 5 of their albums since. I’ve bought all of Aimee’s in the last 15 years. Honestly I don’t think I’ll ever be able to hear a SD song in the future and not think of this huge blunder by Donald!
HOLY SHIT YOU’RE KIDDING. I like that so much more, I too always thought “under me” meant in a sex way and I assumed the chorus meant like “Heeyy Brooklyn owes ya one, lady” but this information makes the verses make SO much more sense, and of course is way less gross than what I thought it meant
Love Aimee. I just wish someone would tell musicians in general to step back 2 inches from the mic and enunciate. The kissing the mic thing makes speaking and lyrics very hard to hear and understand. from an old man.
According to Anthony Robustelli's 2017 book "Steely Dan FAQ" (frequently asked questions), The Charmer was a guy who lived in the apartment "under" Donald Fagen on President Street in Brooklyn, hence the name "President Street Pete" in the album's liner notes. It's been suggested that Pete was the consummate bullshit artist who lived above his means by cozying up to people with money.
Nope. I do know a quilty track when I here one. I'm a Vermont redneck I never know what Donald talking about, Major Dudes, meeting Napoleon, stocking face with a loaded gun? All with outstanding musical arrangements. So yes your assessment is spot on.
Too bad, she could have sung it with them. Fagen no longer sings either of Palmer’s tunes from Can’t Buy A Thrill, he has one of the Danettes take the lead. What might have been!
talking 10 minutes to do that! I love this song and did a version of it. I don't know if my version is good enough, but you still have work to reach a milestone worth the original...
As a professional and before you do a cover . . have some respect and learn the lyrics properly especially with a widely respected band, musicians and songwriters !
You could have found the beginning of the song in less time than it took to type a complaint about it. I could tell you the minute mark, but I am uninspired to do so.
I am a HUGE Steely Dan fan and I would have paid big money for good tix to that show. More Steely Dan covers PLEASE!
This is great. She should do a whole record of Steely Dan covers and then tour in every city they are touring in on the same nights.
I would LOVE THAT!!!
Yeah. That'd ...'"Really Show Steely Dan', Huh?
One of life’s mysteries is solved! (Always wondered about the meaning too) Thank you Aimee Mann ❤
Wow, well done! I love this song and your voice is perfect for it.
As a fan who attended a show this summer, I would have LOVED a female singer-songwriter, especially Aimee Mann, on the tour.
I don’t agree with what she’s saying about being a female there’s tons of females in the industry doing it with huge audiences and huge fans like Amy Lee and floor and Lizzy and the list goes on and on and on, you’re making excuses lady maybe they didn’t like you
Love your music Aimee.❤ Thanks so much for sharing the explanation of these lyrics. I have wondered since 1980😂
Steely Mann ..... that's a band I'd love to see !
Ok.. this comment deserves more love.. cracked me up.. brilliant 👍

Why take a pill to lower your blood pressure? Just listen to Aimee sing. Beautiful voice!

Aimee, more Steely Dan covers, PLEASE!
I know!! This was phenomenal!!!
Aimee helped get me through AIT when I was 18 in the Army in 1985. I am forever grateful.
Excellent recording of a great cover by Aimee. Love this song and the story that went with it. Thanks for sharing this.
Aimee is just an American treasure…..
Such a natural storyteller ❤️
I've always loved her voice.

I'm a huge Steely Dan fan, and also a HUGE Aimee Mann fan and have been for years....
Ahh, it all makes perfect sense now. Wonderful cover and story!
I too have always wondered what this song was really about, and it's even more cynical than I ever imagined. That's so Steely Dan.
Song is exactly as described in the book 'Steely Dan FAQ' by Anthony Robustelli. He details the lyrics and story in each and every song. They were music geniuses. Aimee's got it right here. A great song, and great cover.

This is a beautiful way to communicate , a songwriters gift is always deciphering.
Aimee Mann , I love you . Please come to Nashville
love the Dan and Aimee~~~!!
Beautiful, fav Steely song.
AAimee owns the charmer under me.👏❤️🥰
MAGNIFICENT take on a spectacular song.

This is a great song. Always wondered what it was about as well.
Great tune and nicely done Aimee :)
But who are The Steely Dan? They are the ones who have to open for Aimee Mann, not the other way around. Aimee is the Genius!
Uh, what?
Yer, right! I always puzzled about Brooklyn, fantastic arrangement, wonderful song but I could not understand the lyrics too well either. Good one.
One of the best venues I've ever seen a show

Brooklyn owns the charmer...and its you❤
fave SD tune. Just reminds me of my Dad for some reason. From Russia to Brooklyn, playing pinochle with the boys.
This is further proof of that decades-old description of Steely Dan: "They're your favorite band's favorite band."
I'm crying now..
I'm glad I could see the chords clearly. Very helpful. Also, Aimie lowered the key to Bb. I'll do it in A, no capo. Very cool.
She is gorgeous !
Hi, Aimee, greetings from Brazil.
I’ve seen Steely Dan live and the opening act was one Catherine Russell.
Aimee Mann still exists! Steely Dan does not and has not since Walter passed on. Having Aimee open for the residue Fagan calls Steely Dan may have upstaged them. I am sorry that happened to you. I really hope it will happen someday. I am pretty sure he meant no harm. I love your music.

I’m a young female Steely Dan and I would have died to see Aimee on that ticket!! They missed out big time
Nice camera work!
Hey Aimee Brooklyn is one of my favorites on that release. You're not too bad yourself toots.
Best session players
Oh my ..
I can see her singing Dirty Work too.
Saw here house of blues hollywood, bad cold,it didn't matter
Love Aimee. I just wish someone would tell musicians in general to step back 2 inches from the mic and enunciate. The kissing the mic thing makes speaking and lyrics very hard to hear and understand. from an old man.
I don't think you should open for Steely Dan you should do a couple of Duets with Donald Fagen on his next album.
She's very funny! Super talented & hot! I'm in Love!!
My wife can't stand Steely Dan. It makes me sad, but I love her anyway.
Yes, we love Aimee and all, but how that guitar player? Lovely solo; Steely Dan worthy.
Breach of contract if it was signed. Surprised Fagan did not step up and straighten things out. At least she got an email about the song.
Fire in the hole?
We miss walter,Aimme,you get it
Brooklyn
The band can have their opinions about female singer songwriters but when they put “Aimee Mann” in all their tour posters, who did they think she was?
Does anybody commenting here really know/understand what Donald or Walter meant when they refer to the 'charmer under me' ?? 😉
According to Anthony Robustelli's 2017 book "Steely Dan FAQ" (frequently asked questions), The Charmer was a guy who lived in the apartment "under" Donald Fagen on President Street in Brooklyn, hence the name "President Street Pete" in the album's liner notes. my god, what a crap situation. Aimee deserves better

you got kicked off because you said "UH" too many times. You know, uh, what, uh, I'm uh saying? Uh, do you?
Soo funny
Steely Dan's management was right. Dan fans wouldn't cotton to a female singer-songwriter.
Maybe a 6 minute speech before the song had something to do with it??
Can buy a thrill
I'm trying to not be in love

Honey,don't quit your day job.
Her day job being a four decade long singer songwriter?
@@nahnope8581 Then why is she covering SD?
@@bobleib737 Because she can do what she wants lol, plenty of artists do covers?
Very classy actually.

she is far better than me, but I suck. I was not impressed, the Dan is much, much better.
Steely Dan is sick.
I couldn't make it through the 6 minute pre[r]amble to the actual song. Soree Aimee.
