Can We Get This Unknown 331 Cadillac Engine To Run??!!

- We recently purchased this 331 Cadillac engine on our last trip to New York, hoping it will be a good engine. The estate also had a 49 Cadillac, so we assume this was his "extra" engine incase there were issues. Unfortunately the engine did not have a carb on it and we do not have one in our stash, but Matt has a spare 3x2 Caddy intake that will work temporarily. The plan is to install the 3x2 and run it off the center carb, and then eventually get a 4 barrel to run on the stock manifold. Let's see if we can make this thing run!!

i agree that the 38 convertible is the best place for that old 331 Caddy to land. I'm 75 and remember a lot of Caddy and Olds engines shoe-horned into old Fords. Cool
The '38 Ford is where you should put that Cadi motor.
Yes
Yes I agree
I agree to. Sell the 389!to your buddy building the A hotrod truck
I think the 331 in the 38
The 38 convertible
I think the 38 convertible would be the obvious choice for the caddy engine.
He also has a few lasalle transmissions laying around
Put it in the '38 vert with the batwing air cleaner - being deeper in that '38 engine bay will hide the carb. A little judicious use of flat black paint on that shiny Holley would mask it as well. That blowby may disappear with some fresh oil and a few heat cycles - maybe a little seafoam overnight in the cylinders to free those rings. But you scored on a great little engine there!
This was made for the '38 convertable!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of the '38 convertible as a home for this engine.
That’s a good size victory for sure. That engine sure sounds good. It was great to see your dad helping out. Maybe the 38 convertable since it’s already a hot rod.😊
I vote for the 38 ragtop. It should get this motor IMO
Well you have the 38 roadster with a locked up Pontiac engine that would be a good replacement or the 33 3 window. Put the Ardun in the 32 roadster you have upstairs.
Nice! Uncle Tonys Garage uses a map gas torch to pull the oil completly out of the pours of a block before painting. He swears by it.I think it would save a lot of cleaning time too.
Definitely the 38 convertible.
38 Convertible seems like a good home for it
The 38 with the Bad Pontiac Motor and if Memory serves me right, Better fix the rear suspension 1st lol
I checked the other comments and it seems the majority of guys suggest putting the Caddy in the '39 convertible. I add my "yeah" vote as well. You already have an early trans and clutch setup mounted on the engine so all that remains is to change the rear axle and suspension back to the original '39-'40 style.
First old cad motor I saw like this was in a 1950 ford.
Dude said it would tear up asphalt.
Great to see Dad in the shop helping out!👍
Back in the day we use to call a Caddy in an early Ford a Ford-illac. Those days are gone forever but maybe you can show the younger guys a hint of what use to be. When every rod built started getting a sbc was when they lost me. I have been following your project 33 3 window flattie engine with the Ardun heads, now that is real hot rodding. I am old enough to remember that combo running al the dry lakes and Bonneville. smooth roads and tire smoke till we meet again. 😎 🏁
Take the oil bath bottom off the dual inlet air cleaner and get a bottom plate from a 14'' aftermarket air cleaner use whatever height element to hide or expose as much of the carb you want. I have even made them work on a 302 Ford engine by moving the stub recess.
I say you guys should put it in the 38 Ford. I would love to see you guys cruise it down the road.
Loose the whole drivetrain in the 38 & install this with the ford trans & a stock ford rear with stock cross spring & you`re good to go! You will be doing a first drive in the 38 in less than 2 weeks.
The 38 convertible with the seized Pontiac motor
Great video!, put in the recent 38 Ford.
when it was idled down it reminded me of Christine, STALL 20, STALL 20!
If the Pontiac is locked up in the '38, maybe the Cadillac would be a nice engine swap for that. it would be so good as a taildragger with that engine too
I think it belongs in a heavier car, maybe the '39 roadster, a 4-passenger, full-rendered, let's go out for dinner car for two couples or a family of four. Clean it up and make it look nice, but also keep it under the hood, not hanging out in the breeze and all bedecked with chrome but subtler; clean but understated.
If I remember correctly, the 38 Ford you recently did videos on already has a not-Ford engine in it. If that car's existing engine turns out to be junk, put this Caddy in that car.
Put it in38 conv and put old rear back in and lower it
The Caddy motor would go nicely with the '3 on the tree' in 'Frog' the 38 Convertible with the tree frog paint job.
I agree the '38 roadster. Doll that engine up and paint some flames on it, etc......
hi guys I think the 38 comv would be great
Yuppers, love these motor start-ups! The look on your faces says it all! Nice thumper. Go Iron Trap, keep moving forward!
Lot of fun to watch the resurrection process. This engine was likely destined for the scrapper before you rescued it.
Definitely a keeper. That restored green convertible would be great candidate imo
The 38 for sure!
Looks like a natural for the '38. But I could see it in the A-bone, too...
I'm 76 years old, and I remember this was a highly sought after engine for use in the older Fords and Chevys. You can never go wrong using a Cadillac engine. Cad's insistence on high-quality materials and construction definitely pays off in the long run. The use of a high-nickel content cast iron for the engine block means these engines will last much longer than the lessor-quality engines of the day. We tend to forget in these modern times of engines that routinely run a quarter-million miles between overhauls that engines from this era were meant to be overhauled at 60,000 miles. The Caddy should have no problem making it to the 100,000 mile mark with no major issues. If the Pontiac engine in the 38 convertible needs a lot of work, swap it for this engine. It is a period-correct combination but keep the existing hot rod suspension too.
Great stuff guys, another rescue that must be destined for the 38 Convertible. Keep it simple😎a bit of a "Sleeper Look" would be Cool
Great closing shot of fire coming out of the starboard exhaust manifold. Always look forward to fellow PA guys saving old iron, keep up the great work!
How about the '38 convert?
When I was in the Navy I had a '68 Dodge Charger R/T with a 318 that had a Holley 4-barrel. It drove around town on 2 of the barrels and when I hit the gas it would almost leap when the other 2 barrels kicked in. I loved that car. I once got it up to 124 mph, but I panicked when I remembered that I had recaps on the front wheels and slowed down. Good times.
124 on recaps?
Yep, scared me into slowing down. I was lucky.
I vote for the 38 convertible!
that awesome Caddy has gotta go in the '38 rag
Fun to watch! Always cool to see Dad Murray. My vote for the Caddy motor would be the 38 cabrio. But only if the Pontiac can't be used.
If you dont get the Pontiac engine running in the 38 convertible I think this engine should replace it.
That was a very satisfying video seeing that Caddy come to life.
Maybe that old man had a plan to put this in the Ford ’38 you bought so it would be cool to make his plan to come true.
carb made all the difference sounds ready to run.
I agree with others the 38 would be great 😊
So the question begs to be asked.... DO you really need a run stand?. Excellent video guys. Glad it ran beautiful.
Thank you Matt and Steve for the update on the Caddie engine ! I'm glad that it turned out to be a nice engine !
Love the sound and flames of a straight exhaust....think the 38 roadster is a match😎👍
Nice job guys you saved another one 👍😎
Put it in a roadster, maybe the 38 convert.
This video is gonna be one of mixed emotions for me, Matt. Back in the late 50's I bought a '40 Ford Sedan, and a big old caddie flathead with intent to build my "Fordilac".Much to my regret I soon joined the USAF, got married, and the fordilac was not to be ( sigh)...
@@g.o.b.2558👍👍
Thank you for your service !
A good day at the fun factory. Heck yea, throw that in a hotrod and let the fun began.
Sweet!
This is why they were so popular back in the day. Lots of torque, & you can't kill 'em...
The deposits on the points , are the result of transfer . Atoms , coming with the current flow of electrons , are only one way in a DC circuit . AC goes both ways . But that is the reason it "oxidizes" , especially on one side . That intake you removed is likely very rare . Oh baby , using it ?!! That's what I like ! Nice ! What ever it fits in , that's where it should go . That Holley rocked it , right out of the box . Wow . Blub , blub , blub , blub . Perfect ! Sounds healthy to me . Matt & Steve were the stars of the show though . Holley just made sure it happened . That tech knew his carbs , & his customer's needs . Awesome , all involved , nice engine , great first start . Heavy metal road star , that one . Rock on , ITG !
Depending on the year, the 331 could be from 160 HP (`49) to 250 HP (`55).
It sounds Sweet, I like watching You guys getting it to run again , I see the 6 banger in the Back round , I am looking forward to hearing that run
I like and watch your all your videos but this has to be one of my favorites. Your ingenuity is great fun to watch and shows what can be done with some thought and creativity. And a big parts stash.
The 38 convert is the perfect Caddy candidate.
Everyone grinned big at 17:37!
You could do an engine painting video on this motor!
One more vote for the 38 convertible.
The convertible coupe gets my vote.
Holley carburetors originated in our town...Bradford, Pa. Great stuff, great video Thanks for sharing
Whatever you put the motor in, just about needs to be named "Maybeline" after Chuck Berry. I like your thinking about what they used in the golden days of hot rodding.
I helped my buddy put a caddy motor and trans pulled from a wrecked 1953 Cadillac in his 50 Ford back in 1963. The odd thing was it came with a Dynaflow transmission. I asked my mechanic Dad about that and he said the Hydra-Matic Tranny factory burned down in 1953 so they had to use that Chevy slush box! Yeah the 38 convert would be a nice fit.
My vote is to use it! Maybe the four door convertible?
38 Convertible ya just got!
Great job boys 🤙🏽
Like most, the 38 convertible, and then do a video or videos on rebuilding that 389 Pontiac
With it running the first i see on the right bank you have a exhaust valve hanging open some times thats way the pop and fire ball out the exhaust manifold but its going to make a good motor
Just a stuck acorn burning it's way out
🗿💨 put it in the 40convertable of course 👍 thanks for sharing
I have to agree with almost everyone on putting it in the '38 that has the locked up Pontiac engine !
Great, Matt!
For the record, those needing hi-po caddy parts & services goto The Cad Company, ( Arizona, i think...) they can supply stick shift flywheels & pilot bags w/o crank mods...
The 38 vert! Obviously!😁
Yes, put it in the '38 Ford 👍😊
Dude!!! 38 convertible!!!them auction it off!!!✌️
That was Nuts 😮😅
The Cadillac engine sounds really good. And I really like what you're doing there. Although I was a big fan of the 3 two barrels that definitely looked up rod.
Steve was excited!! Happy man to say the least
That is a cool engin to put in an old Hot Rod. Real Hot Roding from back when It all was getting started. 🤟😎
Yep, put it in the 38 convertible
So cool to see you and dad working in the shop Miss the days wrenching with my dad
the 38 convertable, it would be at home in it!!!
I had a 64 impala where they had just gotten away from the road draft breather system. It had a fitting that covered the road draft breather hole with a hose fitting on it, and then a inline PCV valve which then went to the carb. Your newer holley should be able to handle the excess air from the PCV system and it will get rid of all that smoke.
Dad helping out in the shop... looking around for the tool I need only to find it in the damnedest place. "Hey Dad didn't you used to yell at me for not returning your tools to their right spot?"
The 38 vert without a doubt.
Nice job Steve and Matt that 38 Ford
Yeah the caddy would be a fine replacement for the 389 pontiac
How about a ''38 Fordillac convertible?
Yank the stuck Pontiac out of the 38 and stuff that Daddy Caddy in there!!!
Just happen to have a spare Cadillac Tri-Power setup laying around! lol😂😂
Morning Matt & Steve! Very cool! I bought my 1957-58 371 Olds from a guy in Ohio, the motor was supposed to be good, I may do what y'all just did with your Caddy motor....it would save me a bunch of $$$$!!
How about put the CADDY in that ROADSTER, right behind you, Matt!!! I'd really like to know how SUPERCHARGED Ardun engine, is coming along! Really love 33/34s!!!!
Pull that frozen 389 and put the Caddy in!
Great sounding pyrotechnic show. With the Holley on there the only thing missing is a pair of Mickey Thompson valve covers and yellow Accel wires.
You guys have been on a roll lately, lot of cool stuff landing in your shop. You guys are a real bright spot on the web. Put me down for the caddy siting in 38 convertible. One thing though, was that nylon? strap pressed against the exhaust manifold at risk of melting, then a catastrophe? Play time ends if somebody gets hurt.
Congratulations that sounds great!
Smiles says it all.
