New pool owner here; I've been binge watching pool videos for days and most of them have too few nuggets of good, concise information and too many cheap production flourishes. This video was so refreshing to watch. Great info, great on-camera presence, great audio and camera work, great editing. Head and shoulders above the rest. Well done.
Hi, I'm a new pool owner as well and I'm looking to open my pool. I have the same hayward filter. It's in the winter position, the water is green. Is there anything else I need to do before back washing? Thanks in advance for your help.
The only video on the internet that explains it properly to a noob. Now I understand. Noobs get the waste outlet mixed up as the one that goes back to the swimming pool.
Owned a house with an old pool in Australia for 11 years now. This tutorial video is an absolute must for anyone with a pool. Clear, concise explanations extremely thorough in detail 👌. Wish I found this years ago, thanks for sharing.
I have owned my above ground pool with sand filter for the last 37 years, and NEVER have I known exactly how my filter works until NOW! Thank you for a VERY comprehensive narrative... I learned so much! This last filter was installed with the handle not having clearance to go completely around, which, had I known this, I would have had the installer move it. He told me it doesn't matter that I can't use the "recirculate" position... so I accepted it the way it was. Now I hear you say that it should NOT be that way! So now, I guess I can expect the pump to break sooner than it should because of his error! It's pretty bad when you can't trust an individual who is supposed to be a "professional" and know what the heck he is doing. I wish I'd seen this video YEARS AGO!! Once again, this video is better than any instruction manual. GREAT JOB, Mark!!!
Awsome overview ! As a new pool owner this was exactly what I needed . The pool company gave a basic overview but no where near as detailed as this . Many Thanks 😊
Recommended...!! At first glance 12 min, almost had me skipping it, if it weren't for the words "Very Informative"... I would have done so. Truly well explained, quick to the point, easily understood, & clearly demonstrated. 12 min felt like 5 min, I'd definitely consider watching more videos... thumbs up..!
Thank you for all your no nonsense and concise instructions! I’m going to be helping a friend who’s had a stroke take care of her pool because the pool guys in this area don’t do above ground pools for some reason and this helps me understand what I will need to do! Thanks again!
Hi Mark, new pool owner here as well and I must say that your video was very informative and appreciated. Thanks for the step by step guide and providing real life examples on how to use this filter. I had to replace mine this year and no one explained any of this to me :)
Just got my sand filter after owning a cartridge filter for 20 years. Excellent tutorial! Exactly the info I was looking for, with no added fluff, or trying to sell something. Just subscribed.
Just cleaned , evacuated, painted and installed a new sand filter and pump along with the necessary plumbing thanks for being so thorough, clear and concise. Water is pretty amazing, even though it's just "water"...
We had a 'toad strangler' of rain here in Florida at our house a couple years ago that dumped almost six inches in under an hour! The way our yard is in back, and with ground already saturated from prior rain, the mud came up OVER the edge of the deck, and INTO OUR POOL! And it was a LOT of mud. I fretted over this for a day and wondered what I was going to do. A friend told me to let the dirt all settle to the bottom, then, use a manual attachment sweeper, put filter on 'waste' and sweep it out. It worked great! Once it was about 95% clear of dirt, I put on filter, put in coagulant and then swept it again a few days later. The water was back to sparkling clean after about a week.
This video was an absolute lifesaver! I’m going to use this info to put together a “pool maintenance for dummies” kind of folder to refer back to when I need to refresh! You’re a legend 🙏🏼
Yo can I get that folder I've had this pool for 4 years and this video saved me 400$ on a plumber and pool guy so I definitely need that folder you don't have to though : D
Very well done! I am completely new to pool maintenance and operation. The self developed step-by-instruction instructions that I was provided are in Spanish. There is no explanation for why I was doing each step. However it is all now crystal clear. Thank you! Now I am off to understand pool chemistry!!
Hello, I just say this video and want to say Thank You!!! I just purchased a home with a pool and I have never owned a pool before. The people I bought it from haven't used it in at least 3 years and it hasn't had a cover over it for about a year so you can only imagine what kind of mess I inherited. So Thanks again as I now have a good understanding of basic pump functions and will be on the lookout for other videos.
@@stephaniehoward9885 thanks for the reply! I did in fact drain it, out of frustration, lol. I was quite impressed with the amount of crap I removed from the pool. Thank you so much for describing how everything works. I really appreciate it because I'm getting charged over $400. Just for a company to spend 10min to open & put little chemicals in my pool. I'm a new pool owner & your video did help me. 😁😊😁😊😁😊
Very very helpful video by someone who knows what they are talking about. I wish every RUclips video I came across were this pinpoint on. One day we will be able to filter videos to this degree
Incredibly helpful! Just bought a house that has one of these and wasn't sure how to know if it was even configured correctly. Glad I came across this video.
I can’t tell you how much I love you for this video! I am so thankful that I found you!! I started with zero knowledge about anything related to pools when I moved to a house with an inground vinyl pool about 7 months ago and it’s been a rough ride. I have spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to learn everything I can so that I can understand how the pool works, maintaining it, water chemistry, troubleshooting, etc. I have about 6 binders and 2 notebooks full of notes and I feel like I’ve been to a million sites, read a billion articles, & watched a trillion videos and out of it all - your vids I have seen so far are the best out there. I can’t wait to watch all your vids and to check out your website. I hope you know how super appreciated you are!!
New pool owner! Equipment not even hooked up yet. The place I bought my pool is giving me great training but I still feel like I have gaps in my knowledge. This video, and some of your others, are so helpful. They are filling in those gaps and building my confidence. I want this pool to be a gathering place for family and friends and want it to be as safe and fun as possible. I’ve subscribed to your channel because I know I’ll be back for more and for repeats. Great vid. A couple of notes for the advanced filter user... : 1. Pressure gauge does not always indicate filter pressure, it can be a manifestation of system backpressure too. EG only one return jet on a 1hp pump and 25 inch filter (see, I'm talking inches not mm for you americans!) will often increase pressure gauge reading by 30 or more kpa. (sorry, I know you guys use PSi not kpa but I don't know the conversion data). Pressure gauge pressure can also be dependant on suction line, as in a Kreepy Krawley or Autocleaner slows water flow through system so KPA drops. So you can't always trust the gauge for an honest reading. Also a leaking draw line can cause filter to fill with air faster than the pressure can dispose of it through the laterals, so an air pocket can gather at the top of the tank. Due to the elasticity of air it can throw the pressure gauge way off and a 10 second backwash may be needed to eradicate the air before filtration pressure can be ascertained. 2. In 25 years as a pool troubleshooter in Perth Australia I have never found a need to rotate the MPV handle any particular direction, so long as the pump is not running when you manipulate handle. MPV valve rotors are symmetrical so I can't think of any reason to turn omnidirectionally. If you have any data I would be happy to hear it. Always willing to learn more. 3. Waste cycle is great, but if you have a chlorinator cell there is a third cable which is the gas sensor, and modern chlorinators will disable the system if the cell is not full of water. So when vacuuming on waste you may have to trurn the system on again every 6 or so minutes to bypass the gas shutdown. This is common on systems here is Oz, but you may not have it there? 4. Recirculate/circulation/bypass setting is also used as diagnostic tool by isolating filter or to start pump easier if pump is struggling to prime. It's also great if you have cracked your filter or the tank O-ring is leaking, it allows you to keep circulating water while you work out your repair/replace/burn house down options. 5. Thanks for explaining the "winter" setting. It is not used in our country as it is too hot to completely disable pool for winter season, and I always assumed it was to allow water to exit the MPV upwards in the event of the water inside freezing so the filter tank doesn't crack. Appreciate the new information. That said, I would not use it anyway, as the mPV rotor is not pushing down on the spider gasket so I suspect the spring might warp out of shape, and if the rotor stem o-rings are not between the stem and the top assembly plate evenly could they not become warped? Maybe not, but food for thought. Surely it is less risky to just open the bleeder at the bottom of the filter tank instead, most filters have one now. on even just take the pressure gauge out? 6. Rinse is recommended but I have found it unnecessary as a follow-up to backwash mode, so long as the backwash is long enough to clean the filter out properly, maybe 2 minutes on a 25inch filter. A rinse is required if a backwash cannot be completed due to a limited disposal capability to waste water, or iuf the valve is grinding as it moves indicating sand between the robot and internal walls of the MPV, but other than that is is not a must. 7. Those Hayward filters are great, we have them here too. But be careful, they look big and so people stick 2hp pumps on them, but the valve diffuser his not strong and has a tendancy to blow right off the valve so the filter is not internally cleaning.
New pool owner here and boy this is very very helpful. We are closing on the home next monday and sounds like i need to get to cleaning the pool right away

We have an inground fiberglass pool. I've read some comments below where installers seem to give differing opinions on other subjects, as well. I'm a bit confused on the backwashing timetable, but I think I'll listen to you as we have a Hayward, like I said. Love your concise info. VERY well made video! Thanks!!

Thanks! Kept getting sand in my salt pool but didn't know to rinse after backwash. We bought an older home with an inground vinyl pool so this is our first couple of years of pool ownership. Going to vacuum directly out to bar ditch and then backwash and rinse. Appreciate your videos very much. New sub!
Thanks…new pool owner and big rains lately and another tomorrow. I couldn’t remember for the life of me whether the waste meant I had to add that powder like backwash…so no it bypasses the filter. Thank you!
Have watched several of your videos tonight. My Hayward Multi port is discharging water from the waste pipe when my handle is anywhere except in the normal operating position. From your videos I have determined that I need to rebuild the multiport for a return to normal operation. Thank you for the videos. I will be ordering rebuild parts tomorrow.
Excellent Video thank you so much. We bought a house with an above ground pool and it has a sand filter. We’ve been trying to learn how to use the system so we can get the pool cleaned and be able to use it
i never turn the pump off either, guess there is a chance of blowing an O ring, but as soon as on pushes the handle down it starts relieving pressure. Well have only been doing it that way for 15 years.
Thank you so much for this video. I feel confident in my ability to operate my Hayward Sand Filter!!! I am so excited!!! I truly understand the functionality!!! Thank you again!!!
I just got a sand filter that I am planning to add to my above ground pool system this summer but I had no idea how to operate a sand filter so I totally appreciate your walk though. I look forward to more videos like this.
Good video, I didn’t check all comments to see if you talked about sand filter blow outs. Very different than traditional backwash and rinse cycles. This is a must when the pressure gauge indicates sand is very compact even after the backwash and rinse cycles are are completed.
MARK!!! WoW! What an informative video. I watched it twice the second time pausing often to make a Filtration instructional guide sheet to add to my downloaded manual. I too am a new large pool owner left by previous home owners of which I purchased with out a clue to the S O P's of the pump and sand filter. You sir took all guessing work out of the operation. Excellent job 100% and THANK YOU!!!🌞🌡🩳🏊
Oh, man. I wish I had found this video last year when we moved into our home. I'm pretty sure my pressure gauge doesn't work since it's always at 10psi. I had figured out the trick of keeping an eye on the returns, though
This video was very educational. I now know how to backwash my pool. All I need to know is how to connect my automatic pool cleaner in the right settings.

Excellent Video thank you so much. We bought a house with an above ground pool and it has a sand filter. We’ve been trying to learn how to use the system so we can get the pool cleaned and be able to use it
That was excellent. Thank you so much for explaining all of the settings.
I Never turned turned my pump off using the dial. I'am such a ditz. Thanks for all of this info.
i never turn the pump off either, guess there is a chance of blowing an O ring, but as soon as on pushes the handle down it starts relieving pressure. Well have only been doing it that way for 15 years.
Hi Mark, I live in France so good advice in English is invaluable. Thanks for the good clear presentation.
Thank you so much for this video. I feel confident in my ability to operate my Hayward Sand Filter!!! I am so excited!!! I truly understand the functionality!!! Thank you again!!!
Brilliantly done and if no one gets this, there’s a problem . SUPER Video
Very good and easy to understand. Now we can understand and actually visualize what's going on with the filter.
Thanks!
Thanks Mark for the excellent presentation. I'm a new pool owner and this is very educational. Thanks again -Cheers
Excellent videos, they're very helpful in understanding and teaching me what I needed to know.
Lots of clear information and no waffle - awesome! Subscribed.
New pool owner here. Thank you for the video
Superb video. Great clarity and directions on the different functions. Made me understand my equipment much better! Thanks!
OH MY GOD... Better explanation of any other video I saw. thanks
glad theres help out there, thanks for your help Mark and explaining it making simple to understand how the system really work!
I just got a sand filter that I am planning to add to my above ground pool system this summer but I had no idea how to operate a sand filter so I totally appreciate your walk though. I look forward to more videos like this.
Excellent video, like always, I always learn something new from every video that Mark does. Great job !
Excellent job 100% and THANK YOU!!!🌞🌡🩳🏊
Great job on this video. This guy is very good at explaining everything.
This was outstanding, Mark. Now I know how to properly operate pump.
Thanks heaps. This explains it perfectly in an easy to understand way.
THANK YOU!! Needed a refresher as I head out to do all this today:)) Appreciate you!
Great video. Answered A LOT of my questions. Thanks!
Great job Mark! Thank you for the thorough overview!
This was an awesome video! Just purchased a home with a unground salt water pool and this was very helpful.
Amazing. So thorough once again. Love the videos. So glad I subscribed. Thanks a bunch!
Best explanation for the hayward filter. Thank you.
Great video. More info than any other I've watched. Never knew about the clockwise only filter handle movement 👍
Very Informative
I have only been using the filter and backwash
Now that I know what each position does will know why they are important
Thank you. This video was so helpful as a new pool owner.
