The clean vocals is a trip

What an inspiring band and yeah, one of the best bassists in the business.
Right? I never delved into the personal lives/stories of these guys till recently. Sure, I have everything they ever released, but I watched a fantastic Robert DeLeo interview and he really makes me want to pick up a bass (so does Laura Lee of Khruangbin) at my very advanced age.
I have all sorts of other instruments I either inherited or acquired over the years, but never a bass. I literally just turned 57yo, and I'm about to get my first bass. Trying to find a left handed one that isn't too terribly expensive.

This paired with the early version of Big Bang Baby really shows how much the drugs affected his voice even this early on. This is 19 years before 2015 and the infamous "Vasoline" performance but you can really see the toll it took on his voice. Now this is nowhere near as bad as that, in fact some of the vocals from this, mainly the first chorus, seem to be used on the final version of "Trippin'..." but once you hear it it's kinda sad since it reminds you of the path he'd eventually go down. It's why it's hard to revisit this album and 12 Bar Blues (Scott's first solo record) sometimes, because once you notice the strain the drugs had on his voice in this period, it's hard not to.
It's a demo man. I saw them several times between 1996 and 2010 and he was often great and sometimes shit, depended on how he was treating himself that week. He was in a particularly bad place when these demos were cut.
Yeah I don't think this is an accurate take. Go back and listen to Core, and even Purple, and then listen to Tiny Music. Scott was in a totally different vocal range on Tiny Music. He was singing a few octaves higher on this album in many songs.
@@kms311 I will agree that he did hit notes that he didn't go for on previous albums (And So I Know, Ride the Cliche, the ending of Big Bang Baby being the best examples), but they are also notes he hit on later albums such as Shangri-La Dee Da where he was sober and his vocals have much less strain (Long Way Home, Coma, Transmissions from a Lonely Room). I will say it could've also been a stylistic decision to go this route, especially considering the bridge of Mockingbird Girl (the Magnificent Bastard's only singe, released in 1995) had Scott singing in a similar tone to most songs off Tiny Music, but without going as high. We'll never know though, and it's not like the final vocals used weren't awesome, some of Scott's best vocals are on this album, especially on And So I Know, which I'm excited about hearing the early version of
But his voice was smooth as anything again on No. 4 and SLDD. You can really hear it on songs like ‘Sour Girl’ and ‘Hello It’s Late’. Then I thought his voice went kind of rougher again on ‘Contraband’, tracks like ‘Fall To Pieces’ don’t have that clean vocal. I’m a fan of his vocals on every album he put out though, I like the way he changed things up. Scott the vocal chameleon!
I always thought his vocals on this album were an intentional stylistic choice.

My favorite album by them. Purple would be a second. Number 4 was fantastic and unique. I wasn't a fan of the Da Di Da album. The only song I liked on it was "Hello, It's Late". Coincidently I consider it their best song ever. Core was too rough around the edges. I didn't like Stone Temple Pilots at all. STP was definitely one of their best and Jeff Gutt has been an amazing singer for the band. Perdida was really unique. To me, it felt like an Easter Egg continuation of the Da Di Da album

They basically took off the vocal filter that made him sound like a 2000s indie band
Very strange to not hear the solo. Some other very interesting, subtle differences here. I like the clean vocals. Still clearly double-tracked but less (or no) reverb. Perhaps my all time favorite STP song. Very interesting to hear this early version.

They could do without releasing the demo versions. Scott was obviously not at his best in these. I know they want to put out something as a cash grab but you can tell Scott was slurring a lot. Just let what's left of his legacy exist in peace.

Without the solo, the breakdown just sounds very.. empty.
Not a fan of this mix. Vocals on the Verses are too quiet and the doubled vocal portion is too loud. choruses are too dry and loud. The vocal dynamics are just all over the place. Instrumental sounds great, everything is much more defined....minus the solo lol

If I was the remaining STP I would dig through every unreleased old song featuring Scott and find one that has some potential, maybe something that could’ve been on Purple, hire one of these RUclips remixers and have them turn it into a whole song (focusing on hooks that pop out). I guarantee something like that would have a better chance at being a big hit than anything else with the new singer. Weiland was a blessing and a curse for STP, on one hand his voice and lyrics made them famous and millionaires, on the other hand he let his demons destroy an iconic band and the potential for future hits… bummer.
