What an epic sound! It felt like the spirits of my Slavic ancestory (my family name means winter, fittingly for the song) were arising within me to encourage me to be steadfastly heroic! I'm so glad to have been introduced to this musical group and the song!

That's a Slavic "white voice" harmonizing, polyphonic technique. Very ancient, pre-Christian also. Many Slavic countries have similar style singing techniques, with regional variations, but they have the same roots and common features.

To be honest translation "In the arms of Mara" isn't convey the full meaning, it's more like "In the Mara's embrace".
    English translation of the text:
    White winter came without asking
Severe she came, covered all around with silver snow
Turned to ice my soul and my heart
Chained the river with the frozen tears.
    White winter brought ill thoughts.
Sun hid, there's a full moon in the sky.
In the twilight I wonder, hear death creeps silently
Snowy tempest whistles and revolves rapidly.
Relentless winter housed coldness in the heart
    Cold she came, without asking
Brought sorrow, took all my force away
    White winter.
Snowy fir trees shake in wind,
And fierce winter in the heart doesn't come to end.
Blizzard knocked to the window unexpectedly
    Cruel winter.
And I can't sleep, blizzard charmed the soul.
Winter took away the beloved friend.
Evil winter's sorcery ruined my soul,
Cruel winter took me in the Mara's arms.
And some lore. So Mara/Marena/Morana/Marzanna (from proto-indo-European "mor-" death) is a Slavic goddess of death, night, winter, dreams and rebirth. According to Slavic mythology Mara dies when the spring comes and rebirths as Kostroma (from Slavic "kostyor/koster" - bonfire), The Goddess of spring and fertility. Usually represents as young girl in white loose clothes with oak branch in hands or hair. Also in some sources it can be Lada instead of Kostroma but it believes that Lada was created as mistake/misunderstanding in 15th century when Poles was translating East Slavic holy texts or smth like that. And the end when Kostroma dies she becomes Mara again. And it's like endless cycle of season changing.

Mara is the Slavic goddess of Winter. death and restful sleep. She took the warrior in the clip. He didn't run away. He fell into her arms. She took him away. A Snow Queen of Andersen tale is analogue of Mara.
Your reaction is a one of the Best in the world))

    Wave, I love you ...
It blew my mind into pieces, listening to a Russian band singing in Russian, and hearing you commenting on it in English 🤪
I've never heard about this band, but they are truly amazing. It's like a Russian Wagakki Band.
I did not listen to lyrics very closely, the voices here are more like instruments for me. But I should tell you that most of the Russian folk songs are like this, they are very gloomy. This one is also very beautiful musically, so, I did not feel significantly depressed after listening to it, but the lyrics themselves are all about "terrible winter," and I think the death by freezing is implied. Although I really should listen to it again, concentrating on lyrics.
Your high octave was very good, you hit it perfectly ✌

Yup, this is a "White voice", a singing technique traditional for most of the Slavic countries.
    06:30
    You're right again, it's a somber song.

No, it was a violin picking

I think you would like the Indian folk metal band Bloodywood. Think that there are several Celtic folk metal bands, but can't think of any of their names...maybe someone else here may know some.
    Very good review/reaction! Thanks Wave!

I think you might have just become one of my favourite reviewers, with just one video. Your analysis during the song was great, you didn't seem to miss anything, and your sense of wonder is so refreshing. Grai has become one of my favourite bands, such a great sound.
I don't know if you've heard any of these others that I've fallen in love with from around the world. Here's a few of my top picks for you to check out, I think you'll enjoy the range of sounds.
First is a song called Helvegen, by a band called Wardruna, with Aurora [official video: ruclips.net/video/FnkTuHP9q3o/видео.html ]. It is a song about death, dying and being remembered. And features some really haunting and powerful vocals, and very authentic, traditional instruments, most designed and made by Einar Selvik, the lead singer of Wardruna. There is quite a lengthy write-up in the notes of the video, and English subs are available for all of these recommendations. I do also recommend checking out anything from Aurora on her own, she has a magical voice. And anything else from Wardruna, incredible band, but check this song out first, you can see both at the same time. Two birds with one stone, as it were.
Second, check out a song called Wolf Totem, by The HU Band [official video: ruclips.net/video/jM8dCGIm6yc/видео.html ], their name means 'people' btw. The HU Band is from Mongolia, and their music features traditional Mongolian throat-singing and instruments like the Morin Khuur (horsehead fiddle), with a more modern arrangement. They're self-described as 'Mongolian heavy-metal', and they are fantastic. The song, Wolf Totem, is basically a war-chant, and lets you know what a bad idea it would be to come to their house and start trouble.
The last I'll recommend here is from a band called Heilung, whose name means "healing". I'd like to recommend a song called Norupo [official video: ruclips.net/video/64CACoHNBEI/видео.html ]. There will probably be a lot of static from other Heilung fans about what song you should check out first if you've never heard them. Norupo is such a fabulous song that I got a half-hour loop version, put it on repeat for an entire day, and I still love listening to it. I'm not sure there are many songs I could listen to hundreds of times in row, and not want to bash my head on a rock, but this is one, and that's why I'm recommending it.
I do look forward to seeing more from you. Have a great day.
    Mark
