(Mara, Morena) is the Slavic Goddess of Winter and Death, strong and formidable. Her image symbolizes the combination of birth, fertility and death. Mara gives nature an opportunity to rest, purify itself and be reborn. The Slavs were not afraid of her, but revered her. It was believed that the Goddess was always there and reminded of the inexorable passage of time.
Mara is actually one of the names for ancient Slavic goddess Morana/Morena/Marzanna, winter goddess. In old Croatian folk songs you can still hear about her exploits in attempt to seduce Ivo (actually Yarilo/Jarilo, young god of vitality, spring). In Indo-European languages Mara, Mor, and variations on these are root words for "death", so it isn't surprising that she (Mara) assumed the role for both ruling death and winter.
