It’s a sick display of brilliance and ability and a joy to listen to. It’s like breathing and looks effortless but you have to believe they have combined for 6 figures of hours of playing and practice to get to this point.
Amazing virtuoso musicians, I love how they listen to each other and work together, no egos, just beautiful blended sounds. I agree that this should be in the library of Congress for future generations to enjoy.
What an amazing show. Don't forget you can join Mike Marshall's ArtistWorks school of mandolin. He's a great teacher and will really help you progress as a player. What a combination these two make - just brilliant.
Two of my favorite mandolin boys... miss the moment at one of Thile's Bach concerts... at the end he called out for a finale... I yelled Jessamyn's reel and he played it. Divine.
Could some folks correct me/help fill this in for us all? 00:30 Shoulda Seen It Coming 6:15 Harvest Time 10:48 Carpathian Mountain Breakdown 18:22 "A Chris Thile love song" 22:04 Desvairada - Garoto 28:02 Two of Bach's Goldberg variations 31:37 [something] 38:10 What A Blast! 44:30 Bach: gigue from partita #2 in d minor (with Bass "continuo" - no! entire 2nd part! - by Marshall) 50:58 [something] 56:05 Byron's 59:10 end of that 1:02:00 Sedi Donka (in 25/16 time) 1:04:46 end of that 1:05:55 Fisher's Hornpipe
8 years later, May 18, 2021 I wonder where they are now? I heard that Chris took a M.C, job with a radio company, maybe - maybe not - Mike not a word for several years. I truly enjoy both of them, together or apart. I'm hoping both are happy campers wherever they are and whatever they are doing. Talent like this is hard to put into a box and leave behind. The spotlight beckons even if the dollars are not needed anymore. Wish they would have come to New Mexico, I understand that we only have 1 1/2 venues here, Albuquerque is one and Santa Fe or las Cruces are the halves (?) but we do love music, the Indios, the Hispanics and the Anglos plus a few from other nationalities. We are a fine mix of music lovers, one and all!
Mike Marshall was in David Grisman’s group at Seventeen. The thing that’s sweet about the mandolin world is that all the elite players are pals who are so happy to get the opportunity to perform with each other.
Who's better? The answer is the one that plays the mandocello in the background! Oh, they both do? Ok the one that plays the mandobass, seldom seen in public but beautiful to hear.
Undeniable geniuses here. Amazing. I appreciate all types of mandolin playing, but still if I had to be on an island listening to just one great, alive or dead, I'm choosing Mr. Bill Monroe. Not to take away from the brilliance shown here.
Wonderful music. Great skill. No question about that. I just feel very very bad that mandolinists always have have difficulty holding the mandolin. They have to slouch forward and bend their knees in some weird way. Particularly if they happen to be a tall person. I mean can't someone give them a support frame for holding the Mandolin like the ones sometimes can be seen for classical guitars? its basically a frame one side of which is shaped to sit on your knee, then raises the mandolin to the height you want. I mean, music is enjoyable but I don't think the musicians have to suffer back pain and or develop a hunchback just for music . Can someone get to it before we start calling some kind of Mandolin musicians rights professional union? Its a joke, but come on.
Oops it's 5 AM again. I must have been watching Chris Thile concerts... So much for sleep. This is better!
me every night
I was sitting very front row, center for this entire performance...my jaw was on the floor the entire time..
I must've been sitting next to you.
Lucky you.

Watching this today for the 1st time has been one of the great joys of my life.
I am an on line student of Mike Marshall. This is one of the reasons why. Just WOW!
No words.
Just music.
Utterly brilliant.
Inspirational.
Me gusta esa música. Grandiosa
This really belongs in the Library of Congress!!!
Complementary Masters! What a joy to listen to them play together.

Thank you for these shows!!
Incredible musicians and masters of the mandolin family. Such a treat to listen and watch two bobble heads go to town. With all due respect guys.
World class musicians. Love it 🧡

MAAAAN... The communication you two have...inherently, musically...is very very rare. THANK YOU.
That is the first time I have ever heard the Goldberg Variations performed on mandolins. Just STUNNINGLY good
Genius, joy, artistic and certainly there was a lot of practice involved for both of these wonderful artists!
What a treat to hear you both. Treasures.
Mind blowing to watch these guys!!! I was so glad to study at Marshalls online school for two years... now I have no time to do that, sadly!
Outstanding range of abilities. Thank you so mch for the inspiration you provide to budding 5th tuned instrument players :)
Well there went a little over an hour of my work day - thanks guys! I needed that...
I enjoyed looking back on this superb performance by you and Chris Thile. The variety of pieces selected was uniquely interesting.
Had to play that Bach Gigue for Grade 7 violin back in the seventies. It always sounded lonely - and now it just fell in love.
Brilliant! I've listened to this concert so many times! Really enjoyed it! Many thanks to you both
breathtakingly brilliant
Awesome!
...the combined chord at 0:52 is so pretty!
oh man, its so easy to miss but you're right, so beautiful.
Genius + Genius = Heaven
So beautiful, so together, so talented.
Thank You .
Mike is such a lovely chap. I gave him a lift to Sorefingers Summer School after picking him up from Heathrow. Hoping osmosis would do it's thing.
Wow, just wow!
Merci !!!
Man, if I had a time machine to see one concert, it would be this
Thile is a genius. Which sucks, because many used to think I was a genius when I was young and don't know there are people like Thile around.
Just out-a-this-world ! ! 🎶😎🎶
Awesome!

GOD!!......This is Proof Of GOD!!!..I Have Been To Several Chris Shows..So I Knew..But Mike?..He Is Rite Up There With Chris!!
Check out some of Mike's work with the DGQ. He & Grisman do a lot of nice twin mandolin harmony.
AWESOME!
omg holy hell i want to be so in sync one day
Always love me some Bach!
Was there, and amazing!

And the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
There's nothing that sounds more beautiful than a mandolin -- except obscenely talented mandotwins.
Bravo!!!
Whoa at 25:45 it's just like the rain cleared. Magic stuff. I've watched this 5 times, maybe more.
Wow!!!
Mi edad 60 years
whoa. well, that's probably the tightest duet I've ever seen.
just.... wow
It must be amazing to be that precise. Or never allow someone to know if you weren't precise. Flabbergasted is a great word for me after watching.
Super performance bravo
I think those insturments would really SHINE behind a Heil PR30 mic.
Bravini sti ragazzi!
the midnight mando madness that night was also amaze balls.
Saweeet!
Kinda reminds me of "Mandolin Abstractions" by David Grisman & Andy Statman.
Why am I writing this? I gotta practice and practice!!!
Holy shit
Who's better? The answer is the one that plays the mandocello in the background!
Oh, they both do? Ok the one that plays the mandobass, seldom seen in public but beautiful to hear.
From a time when "Giant Mandolins" roamed the Earth...

Does anyone know the name of the first song?
Somewhere between $300,000 and $500,000 of instruments on stage.
Besser geht es nicht!!!!!!!!!Ausgeschlossen!!!!!!!!!
24:45-25:10 is amazing

22:40 Desvairada - Garoto
Can I buy this on CD?
WELL CAN I???????
The Live Duets album would be the closest to this performance.
Whose mandolin is worth more?
