- A waitress doesn't notice the two criminals in her section.
NIGHT CAFE is used with permission from Joshua Nowak. Learn more at joshuanowak.com.
Nicky is working as a waitress at a diner. She's on the late night shift, and it's not been a good one, with an injury to her head, an irate boss and customers stiffing her on tips.
She's having such a bad day that she barely notices the two criminals in her section, who are embroiled in their own disagreement. On this eventual night, their fates will intertwine as the "compound interest" of thoughts and actions culminate, changing Nicky's life in unexpected ways.
Directed and written by Joshua Nowak, this short crime drama functions like a slice of Americana, with its extended cast of characters gathered in an archetypal setting. Those who enjoy how the Coen Brothers riff on the crime and noir genres, such as FARGO, might find much to admire in this short, which similarly applies quirky but character-focused storytelling to a humble setting and unexpected philosophical resonance.
The center of this setting is the waitress Nicky, played by actor Kimmy Shields with an aggrieved, worn-out demeanor. Injured and treated without compassion by her boss, she's simply trying to get through the night, one so bad that she barely notices the criminals sitting in her section. The excellent writing weaves a cast of characters around Nicky, each with their distinct perspective or story. Nicky's boss Jack doesn't care about her injury; he only wants her to get back out there to attend to customers. The two criminals sitting in her section bicker about the approach they have toward the crime job they've just committed. Sydney -- played by veteran character actor Gene Jones with unusual gravitas -- talks about the accumulation of small daily actions, adding up positive investments in behavior and thought and taking in each moment. But his co-conspirator isn't buying it. He's focused on getting back on the road and putting as much distance as possible between their crime scene and themselves.
Another customer has been waiting so long for takeout that Jack comps him his meal, making Nicky lose out on important tips -- which makes her confront the customer out in the parking lot, thinking he was stealing. As Nicky, her manager and the customer trade arguments and insults, the criminals take advantage of the ruckus to move on. But Sydney's conspirator, still in a rush, leaves Nicky an unexpected bonus -- one that might help free her from the cycle she's stuck in.
Part of the pleasure of NIGHT CAFE -- beyond its beautifully careworn visuals and the stealthy stylishness of its down-home take on crime drama -- is to observe the unknowing interconnections between characters. There's also a philosophical thoughtfulness, with conversations and arguments about compounding good actions and "victim mentality." Nicky is berated for acting like a victim, but she is certainly exploited and treated less than human at her job. So it is deeply satisfying to witness nothing less than good luck or perhaps even karma at work, like watching the pieces of a puzzle of life fall into place. - Кино
I adore this kind of plot, random strangers whose lives get connected one night in a random cafe. Superb job.
Me too!
The manager is Jack, Mr. Jack Ass. The world is full of them.
Great acting, great dialogue, lighting and frame composition. Awesome work by everyone.
Loved the gripping dialogue between the newbie and expert criminal. Great short film!!
She was part of the process showing up every day.
I love this channel so much, binge watched the last two days while making a dolly for my granddaughter. It's wonderful to see all the creativity in film.
Really great to see Gene Jones! I think he deserves more roles. Loved him in No Country for Old Men
So, that was him! - well, he did sweat in that movie scene with Javier Bardem! - and who wouldn't?
Which character was Gene? I looked at the credits, but I don't recall the names of the characters in the film.
@@eugenetswong He was the gas station owner in the first scene.
@@eugenetswong in the beginning when the criminals are in the car, the younger says to the older, "Sydney, it says cash only". And when the credits roll, it states that Gene Jones played the role of Sydney.
@@debloml I think eugenetswong was asking which character in *this* film was Gene Jones. Not sure why they didn't simply go back and check for themselves in a such a short film (which makes it really easy), but I chose to be magnanimous and explained for them.
Short films have more depth of character and better writing than most 2 hour + films these days.
To be honest, I think it's much easier to create tense situations and interesting characters in a shorter time frame sometimes. There doesn't have to be a massive build up before the climax. Given the opportunity to be 2-3hrs long, most of these shorts would flop from having to pad out and dilute their films.
6:00 ... That guy is from No Country for Old Men... Good actor.
yes good actor
Old man in red has been putting his whole life on that coin flip.
If the bank notes were marked with anti-theft ink, how would they be of any use to the waitress?
Either that or it was blood. In both cases, tough luck
Someone here said the Anti-Theft Ink will Dry
I get money from the bank sometimes with dye pack ink on it. I don't think they really care about it at most banks.
@@thebigdog2295 I think the dye is supposed to explode to eventually/potentially ID the robbers, the bills go back into circulation?
@@roberthoffhines5419Dye, or a separate device?
this was so incredibly nice. from the dialogue to the music choice.
Brilliant dialog, acting, and camera work! The underdog comes out on top!
The best part of this was the elderley robbers philosophy of “The Process” that was pure genius ,the rest Well what can I say
I agree-the dialogue with them is great. The story just never really went anywhere.
great directing. cool to see the supporting cast with recognizable faces from projects like uncut gems and no country for old men. and is this the cinematographer from Barbarian? pretty legit stuff. would love to see what all of these actors and this filmmaker do next.
Wasn't the Manage the killer Thug who killed the Adam Sandler character in Uncut Gems?
This is like an all-star cast. So well done.
The writing was superb!
Beautiful story told. Wow and great cinematography
More like this please. Good directing and the dialogue was excellent and so was some of the acting. Love Jack. The premise and plot were a bit lacking, but were well made up for by the writing, acting and directing.
Tipping on take away/take out??? WTF? The USA is strange with tipping!
Yep... it's absolutely insane, sure she should be rewarded extra just for bringing few boxes from kitchen window to his table....wow indeed 😂 and then get worked out about not receiving extra for it 😅 seriously victim mentality+entitlement big time
it's not the people that follow that though, it's the greedy restuarants for even suggesting it. when I get takeout and they ask me what the tip is I stare blankface. most normal people do this too, only bootlickers tip on a takeout order. cause that tip aint going to the chef so it's pointless
Ikr especially that she didn't even do anything.
I was a waitress in college & I’d rather wait on 2 tables than have to do 1 takeaway order. It takes more time to box everything up, put sides & condiments in there individually than to just bring the plate right to the table. Also, I don’t think people understand that at the end of the day your server has to then tip out other people (busboys, bartenders, food runner) based on their sales not what you actually made. So, when someone stiffs you, you actually have to pay out for it. It’s a messed up system, but you can make good money.
@@karolinaszczudlo9871 Guess you never did this kind of job. Lucky you.
Omeletto you really do a great job with your short films. I’m surprised you have never made a full length feature.
This is well shot well lit well-edited acted everything
Great film. Those criminals reminded me of Morgan Freeman and Chris Rock in "Nurse Betty". I was so happy the waitress came out on top.
She's a terrible human being and an even worse employee.
Great acting and plot
Very well acted and shot. Interesting characters. A little suspense. Worth a watch.
Wow! That money came right on time. I wonder why he left her so much though. Did the blood scare him off?
They were inked
@@aspirespire8847 The money had anti-theft ink on it. I hope, that she would be able to pass them.
Dang...she didn't break the dish boy off😆
This was great!!!!!
VERY well done in all ways. In one of these short films on this platform(Chipper) and see/hear this short has terrific people in front and behind the camera.
Thanks!
This was very well done, but i hated that waitress 😂
“Call it. Excuse me? Call it.”
That's the guy from no country for old men, that owns the gas station.
really liked this
definitely deserves some sort of award
Definitely could have watched longerrrrrrr!💙🌎
good acting all the way around. Very impressive.
That’s the shop-keeper from. . .’no country for old men’.
great acting!
Is this the coin flip guy from No Country for Old Men?
I'm still trying to figure it out. I'm a Virgo and I trip out over this kind of a plot. That's why I love Omeleto.😅
No diner serves peas 😂
Am I the only one who instantly recognized Nonnie from Insatiable in the thumbnail? ^^"
I did too!! I was happy to see her! :) I was looking for this comment lol!!!
It’s kind funny how the boss criminal is a bit similar to the Boss proprietor?
Gene Jones - what a GREAT actor. can't wait for some smart casting director to put him in his own movie ~ as the LEAD. He can be a scary mother****er, he was the BEST thing about "Killers of the Flower Moon"
Tips with that service?😂
I only clicked on this one because i recognized her as from the show Insatiable.
Nice parallel stories. Boss and female employee vs Old man and young man.
Old man keeps talking about his processes and don't let the daily task to be your master. Which is reverse situation to the boss and employee where boss is very nervous guy that the daily tasks are his master. And the female employee stay true to her principle all the and gets rewarded in the end.
1. compount interest = tips
2. process = principle
Old guy almost got killed due to the results of a coin flip once.
I enjoyed the film but the guy who played Sydney (Gene Jones) was brilliant.
Cheers
Hi sidekick was brilliant too
What's the most you ever lost on a coin toss?
@@vincentdimitri169 I hardly gamble
@@philreynolds2465 Never seen "no country for old men" i take it?
Good movie with interesting and enjoyable scenes. However, why did the young crook give the waitress so much money? Unless I missed something, that's a serious flaw in the movie.
It was all covered in dye or blood or something, doesn’t seem like a flaw
Everything was fantastic, but those visuals were creamy! Great job Zack Kuperstein
Can we have a one I understand next please? The last couple have baffled me 😂
😂 I feel the same way!
When I don't get it, I read the description. Then the comments. Someone will often explain the scene that isn't clear.
Same here...three in a row and today wasn´t my Omeleto day. I need a beautiful round and closed story from time to time.
Gene Jones made this! He rocks!
Gene Jones! Great actor!
great
My goodness, but Gene Jones is an incredibly natural actor.
Mores the pity we don’t see more of him.
So good! So understated!
I just learned what TIPS means🙋♀️🤣
I think it actually means "Trapped In Predatory System"
or perhaps "Theft of Income by Petty Supervisors"
@@dexterford8094 LOL..those are good too..
This old ''FRIENDO'' looks familiar to me ...
Didn't they already release this?
Only released on the internet a few days ago on the 2nd, but it was screened at film festivals all throughout last year.
How long ago were you thinking? Im just wondering if you could be experiencing a Mandela Effect.
@@JoshPhoenix11I think I originally saw this on Film Shortage a couple days ago
it went to Santa Barbara International Film Festival last year, if I'm not mistaken
Happy Ending.
Gene Jones! Que gusto verlo desde 2008
It’s actually cute that this is. . .topical.
He stopped working at the gas station after the coin toss. Hes a changed man.
At one point I thought she was part of the 'process'. The diversion was too perfectly timed
Could you elaborate on the "Diversion" i missed it, still scratching my head (Don't want to get splinters).
@helpstopanimalabuse8153 Lol, no worries. I actually don’t think there was a diversion. That was my first thought but looking back it just worked out like that. When the waitress and the guy who didn't pay were arguing, I thought she was a part of the plan, but there was no plan. Her surprise to the money confirms it.
I almost thought this too. When she poured their coffee, she was totally silent and cold, like she knew them.
I think inadvertently, she was part of the process & that's what he meant when he gave his speech on it
Is that the actor from No Country For Old Men? The gas station store keeper?
I don't understand why he gave the Waitress all that money. I gues I missed something.
Beautifully shot, superb acting, very interesting dialogues, but the scenario is weird with big holes and zero clues.
I don’t think it has holes, it’s just elliptical storytelling which works well for a short because you don’t have time fill in all the blanks but can leave things implied.
So, she's clumsy, unfriendly, ungrateful, argumentative, aggressive and loud and gets rewarded with what? 3k cash? I must be misunderstanding something here.
Is the waitress going to be able to use the bills or not??
she has nothing to do with the crime, and she'll push them easily... the problem is that the rest of the loot in the trunk is inked too... so the lesson is about ''the process''... it failed!... it will be very difficult for them to push that money, and if they do, it will be cheap... that's why the ''fat tip''...
No. If she uses them…she’ll be arrested and charged.
@@MrMnmn911 Self Check out would work lol
So, the sub text of the hard life of waiters in the US is clearly stated. As is the exploitative nature of the small scale diners.
But, why did the younger criminal intern dump the whole stash of cash, because one note was bloodstained? - because 'he didn't follow the process'?
I believe, that all the bills were stained with anti-theft ink.
The bills were marked.
What’s the point? The waitress will spend the marked money which will almost immediately be identified and she will gain nothing except a police interrogation.
Gripping stuff!
I didn't get it
not to be a dick but her whole argument was that he didnt tip and she cant survive without it. firm believer in the reservoir dogs mr pink idea that its not on the customer to help sustain pay when the establishment should pay a decent living wage. i know this is out of left field. im just saying.
God works in mysterious ways!!
this is what will happen if mr.beast becomes old and dine unnoticed which he cant do anymore .
why giving evidence to a waitress instead of tossing the money in the garbage? doesnt make any sense................
Thank you guys for supporting me ❤❤
I think the money was stained by the dye so the criminal just better of leave it
Mostly good except there’s insufficient motivation on the part of the restaurant owner for being such an over-the-top jerk. It’s not like the restaurant was even halfway busy.
It's the " No Country for Old Men" coin flip guy!
It's marked bills, I hope she she's that.
It's amazing what people read into things, some really skewed perspectives our there. It seems that the "process" of critical thinking is in serious decline. That explains a lot, about present day society and why our Country is so polarized. It's due to the

Barely alive, unresponsive, entitled, but she needs the money. Go home honey, and stay in your bubble! Call your mother, so you can cry together.
So what's the story, I don't get it..?
"Criminals come into a diner, where a waitress is having a hard day and one of the criminals leaves her all his bills because they're marked with blood/ink, just as she gets fired."
.. aaaand then what? That's not a plot, that's a scene. There's no story here? What's the conflict? What's the climax? I don't follow short films like this that don't seem to be about anything really. Just a few minutes in time that happened were showcased, that's it.

She was a wreck. Give her a break !
@@carlosidelone8064She might have simply bumped her head for all we know. I don't understand why she couldn't work. Why would she earn tips while sitting in an office?
We shouldn't automatically assume that she is guilty, but we shouldn't automatically sympathize either.
I think guy in the red hoodie lied about his order taking too long. The last thing he said was “I can make stuff up to get what I want too.”
Didn't she bump her head on something that shouldn't have been in the way? What are you talking about?
good catch. you're probably right. I think the whole film is about how this poor girl is getting dog-piled by a bunch of men taking advantage of her. the injury is just supposed to be a way for us as an audience to be dropped into the action immediately. @@S.Waters.
I don't look for continuity errors, but when they smack me in the face like the old mans hands on the table starting at 5:21 and especially 5:41 it took me right out of the story.
