This short film left more of an impression on me than most feature length films. It's amazing that a good script and great actors can make a phone call so compelling.
I kind of lost the story when Stanley said his real name is John, 16:50 and then only did Heather traced the call and called the ambulance. Why not before? If you could clarify a bit, it would be great. Huge thanks.
@@landang7906 Hi, Your questions are valid. I think at first he lied about his name until he felt a connection with her. Once he realizes that connection he felt comfortable revealing his real name. He might have eventually told her where he lived. Maybe the director didn't show that part to the audience. We might have to assume she did get his address and then called an ambulance. I think keeping him on the phone talking is a priority in her profession. I hope that answers your question. I just loved that the conversation she had with John might have had something to do with her being on a date with the guy in her office.
@@landang7906 Also possible, that as 'John' he had called before, perhaps given more information that was kept on file. This is the first thing that popped onto my screen today and just had to watch upon seeing the actors names. Marvelous. Sally Hawkins was absolutely fantastic in 'Maudie'... The heartwarming true story, both happy & sad of Maud Lewis- a poor and neglected folk artist from Nova Scotia who despite being born with birth defects leading to rheumatoid arthritis along with other hardships became famous for her cheerful art and attitude toward life. I highly recommend this film. Sally Hawkins is guaranteed to pull some tears from your eyes with her performance.
@Michelle_Emm It really was fantastic. Simple biography without your typical conflict or resolution, but the acting was brilliant and made you forget you were staring at a screen... which all the best movies do. I'm not sure anyone could have put on a better performance than Sally Hawkins. I don't tear up often, but I did during Maudie.
The first time I saw 'Maudie' was at the cinema. The second time was on television in my beloved mother's nursing home room. Earlier that day my sister & I had made the heartbreaking decision for our mother to be started on End of Life meds. I held her hand as the three of us watched this beautiful film together surrounded by flowers & fairylights. There won't be a third time.....😥
It takes great writing, acting and filming to hold our attention for such a short space of time...well deserved recognition for Sally and Jim Broadbent never disappoints...thank you.
This is what film is all about. Or should be. In 21 and a half minutes it quickens your heart and brings tears to your eyes. I thought I recognized Mr. Broadbent's voice. Wonderful character actor. Film evokes emotion and stops time for the viewer. I love short films. They are very often more powerful that two hours of a full length feature.
I do watch a lot of short films be that Dust, Omeleto or other independent films. I'm very familiar with the seasoned actors, but I've never had the privilege of watching Sally Hawkins until now. This was such an emotionally charged & powerful piece of work to see unfold, it certainly brought a lump to my throat, to see the crisis line volunteer frantically trying to work out through her files where Stanley/John lived before the pills really kicked in. This was an expertly crafted production to watch.
Wow! So powerful. Brilliantly scripted, brilliantly performed, brilliantly shot and lit. Outstanding. As someone who has survived suicide this resonated deeply. Without doubt this is the best short film I have ever watched.. Congratulations to all those involved.
Beautiful story with some of the best acting I've ever seen or heard. As wonderful as Sally Hawkins is in this performance, I think the moments when she says nothing, especially when not being seen by her love interest, is astounding. Jim Broadbent is so believable, so captivating, so true as he goes from emotional to gentle surrender. Edward Hogg's nuanced playoff from Sally's presence is amazing. And when you see each actor at their best, that's called great directing. Thank you, for sharing this perfect film.
An absolutely beautiful, and emotional film.I love Sally Hawkins and Jim Broadbent - 2 fantastic actors.Such a treat go see Prunella Scales.Well done to the entire team for making this beautiful film.
This was so beautifully done. ❤I absolutely love Sally Hawkins, saw her in Blue Jasmine for the first time and she was 100% adorable. So expressive yet subtle, totally genuine. So so happy for her.❤❤❤
every time i see Sally Hawkins, is like seeing totally different person. Remember her from The Shape of Water, Paddington ( she and Broadbent met again 😅), and other movies. She is just brilliant.
I genuinely can’t stop listening to this. What a spectacular cover. I whipped out my guitar straight away but there’s no competing with this! Seriously excellent.
That was so amazing. Really. Felt really horrible that John couldn't be saved. But it gave such a huge impact and perspective - to have lived through love. To have found someone so amazing. And living through all kinds of times together.
@@777cieloazul She looked so much younger in her happiness that at first I thought that scene was a flashback. But hey, it wouldn't be a proper short film if I didn't get confused at *some* point...
As someone who's dying (probably in a few month, but who knows) the thing that's on my mind very often is making sure I give all that I have to those who appreciate it. I have both stories and objects to give to anyone and everyone, and occasionally specific someones (though I have no younger family, and only my dad left, and he's not going to be around much longer either as he's 80 with a very bad heart). So, yes, if you're around someone who's on their way out, even if it's artificially induced (if it's done with compassion and respect for themselves), you can help them immensely by finding value in whatever they have to share.
I first noticed Sally Hawkins when Netflix released a feature film starring Hawkins and an American actor named Ethan Hawke. It is an Irish Canadian co-production in which Hawkins plays the biographical part of a little known Canadian folk artist who lived and painted in poverty and obscurity most of her life in Nova Scotia, an eastern maritime province of Canada.
I first saw her in Blue Jasmine. I couldn't believe she was British. Her American accent was that good. Her facial expressions. Everything. She should have won Best Supporting Actress. She's phenomenal
That film is Maudie.. based on the life of Maude Lewis, who is very well known indeed in Canada. A reproduction of the tiny hpuse where she and her abusive husband lived ( the film was very kind to him ) is now displayed at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. I think the fillm is now on Netflix.... in Canada anyway.
Me too and her art 🙂. So much so I sent off to Canada and bought four of her pictures! They are now displayed in my craft room and living room 🙂. I love them. All the best from a “scouser” living in Australia 😊❤

Omg this was worth every second. The pain she conveyed with every nervous move or stifled tear was gut wrenching. The dinner scene was master full as she found a positive way to lay her daily traumas down.
I’ve lost so many people , family , friends , associates and co-workers to this ugly , sad issue . I’m always amazed at why when I get the call . An old high school friend once said , “ it’s a long term solution to a short term problem “. He is correct . I do understand the loneliness and frustration that life can give you , I’ve certainly had more than my fair share of both and while I have given thought to the topic , I would/could never do something like that because of the damage it does to those that you love ! 💕. There are resources available to anyone in times of distress but you do have to reach out and ask for the help . I wish everyone well , take care and may God bless each and every one of you !
Death is a gift. Sometimes it comes too early for those left behind and for others it comes too late. Eventually we all return to our real home. Love and blessings to all 💖💖💖
Fantasti acting with character development, and depth of emotion. The sight of clocks & persistent ticking in the background was brilliant, reminding us that Johns time was nearing it end. Took a minute to realize why Johns deceased wife arrived prior to medics. John had passed on with his o/d on anti depressants as folk singer Nick Drake had also exited. Johns death was his awakening to his beloved Joan in the afterlife. They'd been looking for one another & were reunited. Also love that Heather took initiative to kiss her somewhat bashful workmate. Sad story with a happy ending all around. Loved this.

@@srso4660Thanks. I was like, oh, so he likes to do the random suicide hotline call while his wife is off at the shops spending all his dough and some other caller who needed the suicide hotline didn’t get through because he was hogging the line.
Sally Hawkins is one of those actors where you see her not doing something huge whether it's just her sitting down, smiling, or even blew a kiss at someone, you instantly said "awwwww" to her because she's really THAT charming as an actress and as a person
I loved Sally in Paddington and The shape of water
What a kind and compassionate soul Sally Hawkins played here & with SO much heart!! God Bless Her Kind -Those who give of themselves to comfort another in need!! The ones who do good work in these crisis centers, definitely get drained after a hard days work, I would imagine. But they can take comfort in knowing that when Karma comes around, they'll deserve the goodness they gave out.
"Kindness & Compassion" is such a wonderful Combination of The God Within us!! I believe GOOD & GOD are ONE, & although we all have good within us, some of us most defiantly have more, than others for sure. "Be Kind whenever possible, and it's always possible" - The Dalai Lama. What a lovely Film!!✌
Sally Hawkins! I love her! She always chooses great roles to play. Last night I saw her on Made in Dagenham. She is just brilliant!
Gorgeous, from start to finish. Bravo Mat Kirkby and James Lucas for writing a profoundly rich treatise on the transient nature of the human experience.
Beautifully written; you captured the essence of this film perfectly.
She was the best Anne Elliot in the film Persuasion written by Jane Austin.
That was exquisite. Deeply moving. What a cast - can't go wrong with Sally Hawkins, Jim Broadbent and Prunella Scales. Faultless and so profound. Thank you.
Gosh, she is good!
Bless those that do sit on life lines listening, responding, and being there warmly for many struggling people. Thank you
What a wonderful short. Sally Hawkins makes everything special
Beautiful and compelling. The fact that Jim is not seeing at all makes it very powerful, one knows instantly what the phone call is all about. Well done, very well deserved winning.

Two of my favorite actors. They can capture any emotion, any subtle nuances and physical expression of unspoken thought.
Sally has been in tons of films, I have seen them all. One of the best.
@Michelle_Emm
It really was fantastic. Simple biography without your typical conflict or resolution, but the acting was brilliant and made you forget you were staring at a screen... which all the best movies do.
I'm not sure anyone could have put on a better performance than Sally Hawkins. I don't tear up often, but I did during Maudie.
Oh yes! Maudie! What a sweet and delightful artist she was. I adored that film. So well done!
Too sad. Beautiful ending. Great movie.
I bawled my eyes out at that movie…I couldn’t breathe when I left the theatre it hit me so hard
There won't be a third time.....😥
Spectacular actors in a spectacular film. Excellent script. A deeply moving story - truly a gift for the viewer. Thank you.
Beautiful film with two of my favorite actors. Really lovely. Thank you to all involved!
It takes great writing, acting and filming to hold our attention for such a short space of time...well deserved recognition for Sally and Jim Broadbent never disappoints...thank you.
What a beautiful film. The writing and of course the acting is incredible. Thanks, with all my heart, for the tears.
Beautiful story that tugged a few emotional strings . Not to be forgotten .
I flipping love Sally Hawkins! What a superb film, absolutely spot on example of crisis support, a very difficult subject handled beautifully.
John, Speaking with an angel named Heather at the end of life ❤️❤, excellent .
Two of my favourite actors . . . a profound subject matter . . . deeply impressional . . . Thank you very much.
Fantastic! English artists are superlative at these kinds of short poignant films.
In long films as well.
Beautiful movie, deserves the Oscar.
What an utterly beautiful and powerful film. Perfectly acted . ❤
I love Sally Hawkins. This is incredible.
A beautiful and sad film. I just didn't want it to end. Please can we have more.
I love love love these short films, becoming addicted to them. And this one is exceptional. Sally is a great actress!
Brilliant……took me a second and then I got it. 👏🏻. The power of a short film.
Sally Hawkins. Such a good actress. Incredibly moving film.
Sally is my girl! I have loved her in every role I’ve seen!
So so happy for her.❤❤❤
one of the most perfect little things I've ever seen. Thank you for your sweetness and kindness.
I loved Sally Hawkins' performance in Happy Go Lucky. Wonderful film!! 👏💕😁
Oh goodness me, that was incredibly beautiful and heartbreaking.
every time i see Sally Hawkins, is like seeing totally different person. Remember her from The Shape of Water, Paddington ( she and Broadbent met again 😅), and other movies. She is just brilliant.
And her performance in Persuasion was just *chef’s kiss*.
Sally’s performance in Maudie as the Nova Scotian artist Maud Lewis was outstanding. 🇨🇦
The smile on his face got me in the end. Great acting. Superb!
Brilliant actors
I genuinely can’t stop listening to this. What a spectacular cover. I whipped out my guitar straight away but there’s no competing with this! Seriously excellent.
Wow 😢 made me instantly go hold my wonderful husband and tell him how much he means to me.... Thankyou for making this film. ❤❤
oh my word... i just love sally
That was so amazing. Really. Felt really horrible that John couldn't be saved. But it gave such a huge impact and perspective - to have lived through love. To have found someone so amazing. And living through all kinds of times together.
What about what John wanted?
Im glad he got to be with his wife again.
And in his sorrow and passing, he influenced someone else to live and love fully! ❤
@@777cieloazul She looked so much younger in her happiness that at first I thought that scene was a flashback. But hey, it wouldn't be a proper short film if I didn't get confused at *some* point...

She's The Very Best! Sally Hawkins Is Simply AMAZING!!!🌹
@@aimeepaterson4423 do watch Maudie if you haven't already.
Loved Maudie.
Me too and her art 🙂. So much so I sent off to Canada and bought four of her pictures!
They are now displayed in my craft room and living room 🙂. I love them. All the best from a “scouser” living in Australia 😊❤
Loved her in Mike Leigh films too.
I dabble in independent film. A filmmaker told me never to write a feature when you can say what you want to in a short. This is a perfect example. ❤
Unbelievably beautiful. if I had one, I would give them another award.
SALLY is exceptional actor in anything she does ❤
😢
For those who just learned about actress Sally Hawkins , I recommend to watch the film Happy go lucky, it’s just fantastic!!!
Wow! Now THAT is acting! Just saw that this is 10 years old. Great!
I'm speechless! Must find out more about Sally Hawkins. What a touching and wonderful story about the kind of love that lasts a lifetime. Bravo!
The Shape of Water and Persuasion are two of her best films-I highly recommend both.
Thanks. How did I not know of her before? Looked up her bio on internet. Will view the ones you proposed! 😉

Wow. This is a very powerful film, very deserving of an Oscar. Jim Broadbent and Sally Hawkins are two of my favorite actors. This will stay with me. Thank you for posting it.
A powerful ending because to really live in this world, we must be willing to get our hearts broken.
Just about perfect ! Thank you for this amazing gem.
Omg this was worth every second. The pain she conveyed with every nervous move or stifled tear was gut wrenching. The dinner scene was master full as she found a positive way to lay her daily traumas down.
Lovely film. So touching. Watch all you can featuring the actors involved, and don't forget: your heart beating 💓 keeps the world in motion
Love and blessings to all 💖💖💖
This reminds me of the film The Father. Such extraordinary emotion 💖
THANK YOU for having subtitled this one! And and even bigger thank you for 🥰Sally Hawkins 🥰
Skilled and sensitive portrayals. Beautiful.
i was just watching this shortfilm...calmly...but the last 2 minutes got me in tears...great work, grat story
Loved this.
This is a lot better than many full length movies. Just goes to show, you don't need big named actors to make a great movie.
Wow. So sad. With a couple of pieces of happiness. Very moving.
I so admire the amazing people who work on those helplines for real😢
