It shows a lot about Jimi's character that he was willing to share guitar duties with his old friend Larry Lee. Wonderful episode.🤗😄

Sanborn has a love for rock and roll despite being mainly a jazz guy.. He did credited sessions for John Mclaughlin and Lou Reed.. His buddies.. Also later, Sonic Youth, on Sanborn’s hosted tv show..

I have a couple of gripes about Woodstock. When the double cd came out they omitted to include ' Mastermind ' and ' Gypsy Woman '. Not the best tunes from Jimi's set , but they should have been included all the same. Next ' problem ' which was not only limited to filming Jimi at Woodstock but most of his concerts. I mean , what is wrong with these camera men ? I don't recall how many camera men were at Woodstock but there was more than 1. All cameras are recording at the same time and surprise surprise , they run out of film at the same time which results in some songs not being filmed at all while reloading a new reel of film. Another great episode with a ton of great pics. Keep up the good work !

I know nothing about Michael Wadleigh who "directed" the Woodstock movie but one of his cameramen was a young scamp named Martin Scorcese! The festival overran, Hendrix and co. came onstage at 8.30am on the Monday morning (he was supposed to close the show on the Sunday night) and they obviously ran out of film for some of the cameras. The footage for the set-closing encore "Hey Joe" was shot by someone up on one of the P.A. towers, and I don't think they were from Wadleigh's team, and it wasn't included in the original movie cut because it probably wasn't available at the time.

I have mastermind and Gypsy Woman from Woodstock on an A+ quality bootleg CD. Both songs are excellent performances, with lead vocals by Larry Lee. It’s awful that these have never been released !! They were just melodic, nice tunes.

Larry Lee got to take a big solo spot during Red House because Jimi broke his high E string, you can hear it and even see it on the live DVD.

Most of us who are familiar with Jimi's Woodstock performance, recordings through the Woodstock video if Jimi only will notice "Jam Back at the House." And there he trades spotlight with Larry Lee. It has been one of my favorites for years. I'm going to have find that Cross guys book about that info on Jimi's trip to Africa. It struck a chord with me because Brian Jones trip there laid a lot of psychic pollution on his soul too.

Those Hit Factory photos were much appreciated....I have been studying-as a hobby-the life of Hendrix for over 50 years now, and have seen many hundreds of photos...but a couple of new ones for me, did show up!...And that very pensive photo of Jimi, taken by Jim Cummins (one of the few Black photo-journalists of that era) is so expressive of Jimi, showing his weariness, but also showing his ongoing quest for good music. And you mentioned that David Sanborn did jam at the Shokan house with Jimi? Never heard THAT before...and it is touchingly informative, given the recent death of Sanborn-a guy who really "made the rounds" with so many famous Jazz/Rock musicians, for around 60 years! My studies of that Woodstock event, included a consensus that Hendrix, during the last half or so of that stunning concert, decided to choose the last few numbers to be basically done by only Mitch and Billy, as he recognized that the larger group was sounding somewhat ragged. Also, I have to say, that Jimi's exploratory "Improvisation" number, was every bit as spectacular as his titanic, definitive version of the Star Spangled Banner...Sections of that virtuoso section, do show up in later tunes that he put together! Finally, Larry Lee did a pretty good job that day. I have a bootleg, called "Lord of the Strings", that does include Larry Lee's performances of the two songs mentioned. Six years earlier, in 1963 or so, Larry Lee was considered to be a little more advanced on guitar than Hendrix!...but Jimi did learn some things from Larry, and quickly surpassed him in ability. By 1969, Jimi was searching for fellow musicians that he felt he could trust, so he hooked up with Cox and Lee, which made him feel more relaxed, and free to pursue his incredible musical journey.

If only Jimi could've played with Mitch and either Billy Cox or especially Noel Redding as a final show for The Jimi Hendrix Experience. All those extra musicians & instruments only subtracted from the performance. Woodstock is glamorized as a great show but some bands had subpar performances like CCR whether it was due to the weather, drugs, equipment or whatever. I feel bad for the fans who were cold, wet, muddy, hungry, thirsty & had no restrooms. It's too bad bands like Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Cream & The Beatles turned down appearing. I'm glad Jimi got the headliner spot. It was so fitting but too bad the rain, etc kept it from properly ending on Sunday night.

Shows of that era were not like they are today as well run mechanical campaigns. And Jimi was experimenting. He must have seen or been aware of Santana, Arthur Brown, Sun Ra and the like and was moving on from the Experience sound. And outdoor camp festivals get rained on a lot, I've been to many and it's always the same, except for the vibe of the festival goers.

I could believe that Jimi truly was unhappy with his performance, poor guy. Jimi was going through so many troubles, and trying to find his next true path in music, an im sure he knew better than anyone else that gypsy sun, rainbows WAS NOT it.

The jacket Hendrix wears was offer by two ladys I think , because Jimi with this jacket was taken in photo with one lady each side left-right . Maybe a gift . 13:47
In the video of Woodstock Jimi finished Voodoo Child and began The stars spangled banner . The riff he play at the end of Voodoo before The stars is incredible , the sound , the style , the bracelet in gold at his wrist is magic . Supernatural ! I stuck in that moment .

Another brilliant, meticulously researched episode. Mitch has often said that he can't understand the romanticism around Woodstock. His recollections here further emphasise that. In addition, it is testament to Jimi's genius that he pulled that somewhat shambolic band with him when he got up onstage, making the performance as good as it was. Jimi, Mitch and Billy obviously gelled, but not Juma, Jerry and Larry - although Larry, especially, was a great player and obviously a top-notch chap. Keep up the sterling work, Belly Button Window - and thank you!

If you were around New York at the time of August 1969 before the festival, you'd hear rumors of Jimi Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner and his intentions of what many viewed as a desecration akin to burning a flag to be performed at the Woodstock festival. Yes, one man with a guitar not only achieved more than many others about the war, but it must be noted, after the Riverside Church April 4th, 1967 address Beyond Vietnam by Martin Luther King Jr., Hendrix, with the drop of his hand, became an enemy of the state. Hendrix was already dogged by Ed Chalpin whose whereabouts during the frantic touring back and forth the Untied States has never been documented and unknown that August of 1969. Reports of CIA drivers and a blown out windscreen carrying the one person, Mike Jeffrey, who was able to protect Hendrix through his own connections is considered here a laughable joke might best be considered within context of a story Joe Liggins tells here> ruclips.net/video/Zq9DKlafCKk/видео.html concerning his own attempts at righting a wrong of theft by Dot Records in the Poconos. The Belly Button Window report here of extortion and hostilities in the small rural settings of New York State must be considered with the inclusion of Bill Graham at the festival's managing, no stranger to the corruption in New York, who took to his grave these complexities. If you were around New York at the time of August 1969 before the festival, you'd hear rumors of Jimi Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner and his intentions of what many viewed as a desecration akin to burning a flag to be performed at the Woodstock festival, and with it a defiance that few could interpret as anything but traitorous against the flag of the United States of America, and Hendrix, a veteran, knew it before he stepped on stage exactly what MLK had felt before April 4th, 1967 and accepted it as his duty, his calling as well as his artistry was more than this kind and sensitive composer, arranger and performer could live with, carrying all of it was too much for such a kind soul did finally collapse because of it, under the weight of the world which we built and now must live in without him.
