  • In this video Derek talks about a hunt from November 4th 2023 where he saw a whole lotta deer and passed on some legal bucks and Darren shot a buck deep in the river swamp. We talk about how the barometric pressure affects deer movement.

    Great info! I’m relatively new to public land hunting here in SW Florida but have inshore fished here my whole life. The journal thing is spot on. Been keeping track of all the variables for the past 15 years, especially on those banner days-and it’s been a game changer. Definitely going to do the same in my hunting journey.
    Learned quite a bit from watching your stuff. 👍

    Appreciate the information Derek.
    Not many hunters of your caliber are willing to share knowledge it’s taken them years to acquire.

    Im very excited for this season. First bow hunt this year. I've watched a lot of your videos, and I've learned a lot. This will be my second season hunting but my first true deer hunt. Ive got a pretty big one on camera. I'm not as hardcore as you yet, but it's really wet back where I went, and it gets about calf deep. Definitely not swimming! I really appreciate what you're doing here man. If I lay him down, I'll definitely be in touch!

    Dudes slinging some good info out there, pay attention haha, slip huntin kills bucks, get down wind, move slow enough to where you can keep looking forward and dont make any noise with your feet. You should be sneaking up on squirrels no problem, if you are busting them up trees slow down. You should see deer long before they know you are there. Its even better on rainy and windy days, instant stealth mode and you can cover twice the ground.

    Do you worry about deer seeing your cameras? Do you do anything to camouflage them or put them high up in the tree to avoid detection? In your experience if a deer sees a camera will they avoid that area in the future. I put 3 cameras out a few weeks back in 3 different spots and got pictures of nice bucks on each one of them. But now the cameras have gone quiet.

      @joewakeman1250 I do camouflage them sometimes or hang them high, it's hit or miss on whether or not they care. I'll have a buck or two each season lock eyes on the camera and I'll never get another picture but it's not like he leaves the area he just doesn't walk by the camera, some camera's I leave on the same tree's for years so I don't really see them spook at those, it's usually a new spot and he sees it for the first time.

    I have a question about my quota WMA. It looks like they have cut down every tree except the swamp. When I look at the topo and aerial photo, every forested field corresponds to the high ground. If the whole wooded WMA is swamp then, how would I pin point specific spots? I have 7 days to hunt, no 4x4, and live 8 hours away. It's going to be all aerial scouting till I get there, what would you do?

      @newperspective1318 That's a tough one, depending on the age of the clear cut the deer could be laying in the cut, once it grows back up enough to hide them that's where they'll be. 7 days is plenty of time to find them and hunt, I'd just start walking the transition lines when I got there and try to find buck tracks or buck sign, I'd probably drive the roads I could looking for tracks just to speed things up.

      @@Dereknorwoodoutdoors Ok thanks for the tip. Sounds like deer hunting 101, but I've been unlucky in FL for many years. I've come close, I shot at bucks, and even hit one but couldn't find it. I'm always open to hear advice from those who connect in FL.

      @newperspective1318 If you wanna message me the name of the WMA on Facebook or text me 813-468-1277 I don't mind dropping a few pins. It's possible I've already scouted it.

      I find it interesting that you say smaller bucks start scrapes because I have noticed that young bucks seem to use scapes longer as the rut winds down in an area. Meaning I seem to see big bucks using scrapes at the height of the rut.
      Have you had similar observations? Also do you usually find multiple bucks working the same scapes especially the bigger ones?

    • @Dereknorwoodoutdoors
      @Dereknorwoodoutdoors  Месяц назад

      @JamesAshley-u9d As far as community scrapes go (anything multiple bucks use I call community scrapes) I see the younger bucks open them up and then the old bucks pretty much know when the does come in heat I think and they show up for 3-7 days or so then it's back to the young ones, I do occasionally see the bigger bucks at the scrape again 30 days later. Last year that's exactly what happened, it's like the does didn't come in on time so they originally showed up October 20th then I kinda had a steady stream of old bucks till that group of does came in January 7th and then it went back to the young bucks until I pulled the camera's in February, but season before last the does came in on schedule so the big bucks were there through Halloween and then gone for the year.
