  • If you are thinking about building a cedar strip canoe, this will give you a rough idea of the process. I used Gil Gilpatricks book "Building A Strip Canoe" www.amazon.com/...

With so much information available on the internet, why not educate yourself first before laying that first strip. I’m happy for you that you did the job so many can’t do.

that's a fine looking boat: It's great to have elbow room to work. I find, I may be pouring concrete to get some level work space, and setting up a factory just to build a canoe. but- here we go!! I have that book too, but am studying Canoe Craft at the moment. Your strong back is what I imagined. Nice job.

Running-extra glue isn't an issue; in fact; it's better to leave it than wipe it. Wiping puts watered down glue into the wood, making unsightly whitish marks when glassing. You did just fine!!

I'm trying to finish my backyard shed to start building a similar canoe, also from Gil Gilpatrick's book plans.

Hannah, I built the Wabnaki from the same book. You really did a nice job, congratulations. I spent about $1700 on mine just for materials. Do you have any adventures you plan to take your canoe on?

What would you estimate it cost you to build the canoe? Looks like you did a great job..

I built a minimal version, leaving out brass hardware and brass keels. I spent about $1000 on it. Next time around I would probably get brass hardware for details and buy higher quality cedar. Mine was quite knotty....but I was in college and cheap worked better. I also recommend getting a router to bevel the strips.

Hi Hannah, I've built a canoe from the same book, I built the Wabnaki, which one is yours? your canoe is beautiful, I used a wood called Paulownia because cedar is too expensive here in Australia, and mine only weighs 20kg which amazed me. Il post a vid soon, thanks for sharing

AT ounce i spotted a huge unnatural dip in the normal fairing of the strips on about the third strip applied when plenty of time to find the issue and change it yet nothing was done? It was painful to observe .
