What to know before you build (Ep 1 - Cedar Strip Canoe Build)

  • In this video I explain what you should know before you start building your first cedar strip canoe. I just finished building my first canoe and I liked the process so much that I wanted to build another one and document the entire build on RUclips (click here to subscribe: goo.gl/z237Hb).
    Here are some of the main points from this video:
    Cedar Strip Canoes are beautiful, lightweight, very strong boats. They are a fun project and they are not as hard to build as they look! Anyone looking for a long term woodworking project should consider building one!
    Process:
    There are three major stages to building a Cedar Strip Canoe (building the hull, applying the fiberglass/epoxy seal, and putting on all the trim and finish work). Each stage has a series of unique processes that I will be posting an instructional video for.
    Build location:
    Where there's a will there's a way - just remember - keep climate changes (precipitation, seasonal temperature changes) in mind and be gracious to your loved ones that have to live in the midst of your build.
    Skill Level:
    While it will definitely help having woodworking experience, many people have built cedar strip canoes with little to no prior experience. More important than woodworking skills are problem solving skills, an ability to learn as you go, and the stubbornness it takes to not quit a multi-month project
    Tools:
    Here are some of the tools I find myself using most: orbital sander, table saw, planer, circular saw, jig saw, drill, router, hand tools, chisels, etc...
    Time:
    It took me 6 months (about 300 hours) to build my first canoe.
    Materials:
    I spent about $1500 building my first canoe. Cost can vary alot depending on the quality of materials you use, tools you need to buy, and if you can score any deals on craigslist. I try to maintain quality in everything I make while also spending as little as possible.
    Here are a couple good resources to learn more about Cedar Strip Canoe Building:
    www.amazon.com... - “Canoecraft” is the cedar strip canoe building bible. Buy it and read the whole book before you start building.
    forum.woodenboa... - This site is actually really helpful. Usually if I type a specific boat building question into google a previous forum post from the Woodenboat Forum is near the top. You can also post your own questions.
    www.instructabl... - This guy (Jim Clem) made a very detailed step-by-step guide to cedar strip canoe building. There are a lot of helpful process explanations for some of the trickier parts of building. I used his blog a lot while building my first canoe.
    I get my canoe building materials from Noah's Marine Supply (www.noahsmarine...)
    Noah’s has great prices, customer service and shipping. I am building a 15’ “Bob’s Special” (www.noahsmarine...)

    I helped my dad build a cedar strip canoe one summer in MIchigan in my grandad's barn. I think I was upper middle school or lower high school. It's a long process. The book you mentioned was the same one we had. This was before RUclips videos.

    Shopvac and fitting cuffs to your palm sander will solve a lot of dusty air issues. Love this shit. I don’t know how you find the way to put your mind and other things that come up in life to have time to focus on something like this. But I wanna get there.

    #1 the glue used to edge of strips should never be to dense or too spongy. You will get crappy hull shaping that no amount of sanding will fix. #2 wet sand epoxy with 3M Flexible Diamond Hand Lap( i always found them called 3M Dia-Pads). Now i see 9 different micron grades available in my MSC Industrial Supply catalog on page 927. A small trickle from a garden hose with these yields cheeper results(better to) than hunderds of $ of sand paper!! Vetern of 22 canoes.53 years experience.

    Couple things. First, your canoe is fantastic, very esthetically pleasing and must have been major fun. However, your use of power tools needs serious attention. Never, ever use a table saw free-hand. You have a band saw that is specifically designed to safely cut free-hand. Next, cutting thin strips; you set the fence up about 1/4” to the right of the blade and proceeded to cut the strips, trapping the cutoffs between the blade and fence, anther very dangerous setup. You need to set the fence to the right of the blade, as you did, but run the “larger” piece against the fence and generate the thin cutoff strip to the left of the blade, free to move and not get trapped as you push the “larger” piece clear of the blade with a PUSH STICK. This does require resetting the fence for each cut but setting a simple stop-block enables very quick, repeatable cuts. Looking forward to your next project!

    Hi Adam
    I just finish my first canoe witch is for my cousin. I watched all your video over and over again and it was very helpful. Thank you so much to have taken the time to document all of this. Now I'm starting another one which will be mine. For the first one, on the hull middle line, I just cut the angle of each individual piece of wood witch is very hard to find the angle. You made a chalk line and used a circular saw. I don't know witch video it was but you mention that if you would have to make another one you would not do it this way anymore. My question is how would you do it

    • @AGuyDoingStuffAdam
      @AGuyDoingStuffAdam  6 лет назад

      hey man congrats that's awesome! thanks for letting me know - I'd love to see photos of yours! There's a video made by "bear mountain boats" that I watched recently where he cut the line with plenty of extra room, then worked down to the line with a chisel and planer. That way seemed a little more safe than what I did. congrats again and good luck on your next one!

    I've watched several of your videos on canoe building. I'm building 15 foot cedar strip canoe. I'm now fairing the hull. I'm struggling filling voids. I made epoxy mix with saw dust. West system epoxy because I use it for stem glue up and also to mount stems to the boat. I've epoxyed about 5 times. After sanding I have holes I guess air pockets. I have less and less each time. I put tape on the inside. Tried wood filler huge mistake. Any hints?

    I have not read the book Canoecraft so I can not comment on it. I built several canoes using the book Building A Strip Canoe by Gil Gilpatrick. Gilpatrick's book is detailed and easy to follow. It also includes patterns for several hull designs including the 18 and 20 foot E.M. White guide canoes. I am not recommending one book over another. I will be buying and reading Canoecraft before building my next boat.

    • @AGuyDoingStuffAdam
      @AGuyDoingStuffAdam  7 лет назад

      Yeah - I've seen that book - haven't read it yet though. I'd love to know what you think of a comparison if you read both from the perspective of somebody that has built before. Seems like I pick up a couple new ways of doing things from every book/video/blog I look at about canoe building. So many weird processes that can be done several different ways. Thanks for watching - you post any pictures of your boats anywhere online?

    • @zone4garlicfarm
      @zone4garlicfarm 7 лет назад

      The patterns alone are worth the price of the book. His other books are good, too. I don't have any pictures on line but I plan to start making videos soon. This gives me an idea for one, a video presentation of my canoe and kayak collection. I won't be shooting that one until the snow melts next spring.

      The Garlic Farm that's awesome - is love to see it when you post it. There are a ton of canoe/kayak builders on Instagram. It's kind of cool having a community to bounce ideas off each other. Let me know if you post any videos or make an Instagram!
