Finally a guide that also cared to include the encoder settings, thanks a lot! Now i get smoothly recorded HDR videos :D
Settings i use for OBS 28.1.1, under "Output --> Advanced --> Recording":
    - Encoder: NVIDIA NVENC HEVC
    - Rate control: CQ P
    - CQ level: 20
    - Keyframe interval: 0
    - Preset: P7: Slowest (Best Quality)
    - Tuning: High quality
    - Multipass mode: Single pass
    - Profile: main10
    - Look-ahead: Unchecked
    - Psychi visual tuning: Checked
    - GPU: 0
    - Max B-frames: 2
NOTE: I have a RTX 4090 card, and the above settings worked very well for me when recording 1440p HDR from Forza Horizon 5 with max ingame graphics settings. The resulting HDR video looked beatiful when opened in "Media Player" in Windows 11.

But when you play in HDR and record in SDR following your settings the colours are all blown out on end video. Sunlight looks ridiculous covering a large part of screen in white light and dark areas appear darker than they should be. Playing in HDR recording in SDR produces a far worse image than just playing and recording in SDR. Is there a fix for this?

I’ve been struggling with this exact issue recently. I switched out my multi monitor setup to have a single 42” OLED screen for HDR, it’s stunning to game and work on etc. I can record HDR footage in OBS by changing settings as EposVox showed etc. However, as this is a single PC and single monitor setup, I then can’t simply load said HDR footage into DaVinci Resolve - from what I understand I have to have another monitor and pass it through the PCIE card to the OLED, which sucks.

Hey man since u mentioned youtube processing, when I upload sdr video 4k60 like 10-15 hours. It is taking days and days even its sdr. My video format is mov hevc aac audio. Is there anything that I should do to let youtube process it faster? And sometimes it processes but 4k doesnt show up and video stucks at 360p and never gets fixed, so I have to reupload it. I use around 30.000 bitrate and quailty is good enough.

I want to dispel the myth that HDR400 and HDR600 isn't valuable. I have a Gigabyte M27Q, an IPS display with measly HDR400 (measured to 440), and I KNOW It's nowhere near an OLED in terms of brightness and color pop... Enabling HDR in games however, DOES allow for a FAR wider range of exposure. In Cyberpunk or FFVII:Remake the in-game camera doesn't need to do anywhere near as much virtual exposure adjustments as it does in SDR, which is a godsend for both of those titles. I feel confident to argue that HDR400 is ACTUALLY valuable once you stop comparing it to OLED, and copare it to SDR instead. What I do to combat the reduced vibrancy in HDR is to adjust it by +20% in Radeon Software. That way the color pop from SDR remain, but the display can handle a wider range of exposure levels. Although it isn't OLED by any stretch of the imagination, it's far better than SDR.

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  5 месяцев назад

Less about the number itself being significant as much as being a usual indicator that it’s not a great display with good HDR support. Countless LCD displays with HDR400 rating where the HDR looks like dogshit. The HDR spec itself isn’t the main problem, HDR400 on a OLED is amazing

Does the "HDR Nominal Peak Level" setting in obs add peak nits level to the video metadata? so that a display can properly tone map or roll-off hdr content that has higher peak nits than the display itself? For exsample, lets say i master my gameplay for led based tv's with lets say 2000nits peak but most oled "only" handle ~900nits, but if the right metadata is present like in movies that are Mastered at 4000 or even at 10000nits, then the tv can tonemap the video instead off just hard clipping everything above 900nits.
i hope my question is understandable, english is not my first language :D

    • @PaulMartel

Awesome question! I would also like to know the answer.
My *guess* is that I highly doubt it, and even if it did, many displays still can't interpret that metadata, which is part of the reason why HLG (which doesn't require metadata) adoption is more accelerated in the video broadcast world rather than PQ. *Following*

Fantastic video -- your content is accurate, succinct, entertaining, and overall very helpful!
I am curious about your comment that "PQ is that what everyone prefers as the way to go, and should get the best results most quickly." I am a broadcast engineer & I lead product & engineering for a large streaming company. We work with thousands of organizations around the world. Most of our customers are not streaming in HDR yet. However, in at-least the live video world (specifically, the professional video market - like Sony broadcast cameras, the largest audio/video integrators in the United States, and the largest broadcast networks like the BBC, for example), the industry is moving towards HLG rather than PQ. There are many reasons for this including workflow simplicity.., but the most important factor comes down to the actual-viewing experience (aesthetics) for the majority of viewers. In short, HLG works better on SDR monitors (monitors that do not support HDR), and HLG is more complimentary to uncontrolled light-contaminated viewing environments (the most common viewing environments).
This is because PQ is a standard that uses an 'absolute' interpretation of reference white (nominal diffuse white) at 203 nits, whereas HLG is a standard that uses a 'relative' interpretation. The result is that - like SDR, HLG can display peak white at higher peak luma levels for daytime/higher-ambient light viewing environments (as in the case of most home viewing environments).., whereas PQ has no way to increase the display's light output to overcome surrounding room light levels. With PQ, the peak brightness cannot be increased and neither can the fixed gamma (EOTF) curve. Therefore, in the majority of viewing environments, the majority of the PQ HDR image will appear very dark with shadow detail potentially becoming very difficult to see.
If the broadcaster (streamer's) streaming platform does not support HDR --> SDR transformation (providing both HDR and SDR versions) - and a broadcaster is only sending HDR, the viewer will get the HDR feed, and HLG will look significantly better than PQ in these cases.
Just to be totally clear, to be able to view PQ-based 'absolute' HDR video, a user has to have an HDR monitor AND environmental light levels have to be very carefully controlled. Yes, some people have movie/cinema rooms, but this is not the norm for home viewing. Comparatively, HLG includes a system gamma variable based on surround illuminance specifically aimed at overcoming environmental lighting issues, and so the HLG HDR standard can be scaled in exactly the same way as traditional SDR TVs and will be a better overall result for most people. Yes, PQ can provide a better looking image with the right equipment and viewing environments, but it will be worse for the majority of people.
Your observation (from another one of your videos) that the OBS devs are recommending PQ rather than HLG is concerning to me because it seems like a split/disconnect between where the video industry is headed vs where the OBS/gaming world is headed, and this will lead to less-than-ideal compatibility down the line; so I'm hoping I might find the right audience to talk about this with.

"play games in HDR, but record in SDR" yields much inferior recording results compared to "recording while playing games, all in SDR". It cannot match the quality of recordings produced in a fully SDR environment. Perhaps my expectations were too high, I would caution against having high expectations. The colors appear darker, initially I thought OBS failed to automatically map the colors correctly, but it's possible that OBS succeeded? I'm not quite certain. It doesn't look very good, but perhaps it is better than incorrect tonemapping of HDR onto SDR?

A question if I may. Does the release of this new OBS version mean that OBS NDI Plugin will not work anymore? Beacuse as far as I know it has not been updated in a while.
I am using a 2 PC setup with NDI and not Capture Card because I don't want to lock my 4K120hz screen to 4k60hz.
However without using OBS NDI plugin I am unable to get the correct colour from my gaming PC on the Streaming PC(when gaming in HDR mode). Since using normal NDI via Screen Capture(and HX) results in overblown image.
Using OBS NDI plugin I get that normal washed out image that I expect comes from HDR(I can then use a LUT from your awesomeHDR pack to get OK ish SDR on stream)

I changed a lot of presets (codecs, settings, tried a compatibility mode, etc.) Nothing happens. Bandicam worked right away, but it couldn't record HDR; there isn't even an HDR setting in it, despite it being advertised as HDR recorder. Truthfully, it couldn't record HDR (due to a custom resolution or something else, it doesn't matter; for my case, it didn't work, only SDR). OBS Studio couldn't even record in SDR.
