The Steelers ended up running the table, getting the help they needed, beat the Oilers in wild card round before losing to Denver 24 to 23 in the divisional round.
@@stevenjoyce5541 20 years later! After Noll won his last Super Bowl he coached 11 seasons and won a grand total of 2 playoff games. Noll rolled with Mark Malone for 4 of those years. Just terrible. If Marino was with the right team and system he would have been a Super Bowl winner.
One more interesting thing... 1:26:06 Wow that's interesting! Later Bill Parcels would go 29-19 with the Jets becoming the first ever HC to have a winning record with the team. Al Groh would take over the next year and go 9-7 and retire to go coach college. So no one before or even since (although there were three that came close) has had a winning record as HC of the Jets. The current coach is 12-24 with them.
Fitting Al Toon is in the thumbnail as he suffered a bad concussion in this game and was knocked out cold on what was at that time still a legal hit. Toons career ultimately was cut short because of repeated concussions long before the era when they knew more about how bad the effects of even 1 was. Toon had received an estimated double digit amount of them between 1985-92 when he retired mid season after suffering from post concussion syndrome.
I remember seeing Al Toon back, WAAAY back when he was a Wisconsin Badgers player! He was soo👍good!👍 I so wanted him in Green Bay, but the Jets got him. Watching him play there was still a treat. He was a phenomenal athlete! Great receiver and pretty darn fast too. The SAD and BRUTAL part of football got Al Toon. As you said concussions were his demise. I can remember him going up for a pass reception, and a mid-air collision 💥 knocked him out! Those hits were scary as hell! They'd go up, a huge leap, arms outstretched, and WHAM!💥 THE HIT and WHAM💥 the landing. Seeing receivers fall to the ground motionless. Falling like a sack of potatoes. SCARY AS SCARY CAN BE! They lay there, no movements. Then finally their fingers twitch, then their arms move. Some of those hits were terrifyingly deadly.
@@EdsterIII It would've helped if a later-career Ken O'Brien didn't place Toon in harm's way by throwing passes that lead right to a defender. Toon took a lot of punishment.
@@lisahardy9707 ....Since you're not aware, I'll enlighten you. That hit was made by my uncle, Thomas Everett #27, whom in all of his years of playing, NEVER leads with his head....Always crossed his forearms and lead with shoulder pads. Secondly, that game was in 1989, so there was no "head to head" contact rule back then.
@@jameseverett3561 Your uncle's hit was clean. The hit by Lloyd at 21:21 was a pure cheap shot. Ball is gone right in front of him, he proceeds to take two or three steps lowers his head and spears Ryan right in the chest.
As for that hit on Ryan by Lloyd..... that was legal because Ryan was out of the pocket and running toward the line of scrimmage. He is treated as a runner.
Steelers made a bigger mistake not drafting hometown Marino. They had first crack at him before the Jets and Gabe Rivera was an injury bust (paralysis from drunk driving) while Ken O'Brien was a decent QB (but Jets drafted poorly, bad O-Line).

The 60's and 70's Redskins helmets were so different. The Yellow color with the R in the circle w/Feathers, was sweet. Also the Florida St looking Spear on a Maroon colored helmet, another great👍look! The Washington Redskins have always had awesome jerseys and helmets. The older Steelers yellow w/black stripe, same logo, just different color scheme,🆒️!😎🆒️😎🆒️👌 My point, I just love watching the NFL! Seeing the older players, seeing teams that are gone, Hall of Fame players, and very different looks for both teams, their jerseys, helmets, and stadiums!🏟

11:40 for the Everett KO of AL Toon
Wow! Everett went on to win multiple rings with the Cowboys
Joe Walton was the Offensive coordinator for the Steelers after the 1989 season.
I can’t believe no flag on the Greg Loyd hit. He woulda been suspended for the season in today’s NFL!
Nice find thanks for posting this. Do you have the 1989 season finale between the Bills and Jets? Or any late season Jets' games from 1990?

That concrete Astro Turf didn't help either. Brister and Ryan got concussions from the turf in this game (with the help of 2 vicious hits).

Greg Lloyd with the wrestling three count after that hit.
