    The 1990 Steelers quietly had one of the strongest Defenses ever. But quietly because the really poor Joe Walton offense did then in. They finished 9-7 and missed the playoffs on a tiebreaker.
    This game set the tone for the Steelers' MNF dominance at home for the rest of the decade.

      @EdmacZ • Steelers(9-6) led the AFC Central by 1 game over the Bengals and Oilers(each 8-7) entering the final weekend of the 1990 season. A victory over the Oilers, and they win the Division....a loss would eliminate them from the playoffs due to the team's poor division record

    • @shiorisaitou4846
      @shiorisaitou4846 Год назад

      No, they had a very good secondary and good tackling linebackers but no real pass rush. They had a number of better defenses in the coming years under Cowher.

    • @charlieyellowstone8248
      @charlieyellowstone8248 Год назад

      @Shiori Saitou No, they did have a very good defense. They were the #1 rated overall defense in 1990 and only gave up 240 points for the entire season. That's only 15 points per game. Better than the NY Giants who won the super bowl that year.
      And they did that with no help from that offense.

    Once I saw the opening kick off return I remembered watching this game when it was played. I believe the Steelers had played the 49ers the week or two before and the Steelers secondary did a great job vs.the great Jerry Rice, John Taylor, Brent Jones, et al. receiving corps, they were just having to cover them for like 4-5 seconds because this Steelers team had no pass rush.
    #20 Dwight Stone was a frustrating player. He was very fast but didn't have the best hands and was prone to bonehead plays like running out of bounds for no reason like in this game.
    #86 Eric Green is one of those guys that wasn't good enough to be a legend, but was pretty unique. Even though he was listed as 285 lbs he was really over 300 and yet he had good mobility and soft hands. It was fun watching DB's try and deal with him his first years in the league.
    For what it's worth, one of my few criticisms of Cowher is that I thought he should've played Brister at QB over O' Donnell. I don't think they one was really better than the other, Brister threw a better deep ball and could make some plays while O'Donnell was more consistent. The 90's Steelers had defenses that could make up for a QB error and they lost so many games because O'Donnell couldn't make a play in a big spot.

Let's just say he underachieved throughout his short Steeler career, although in all fairness, the Steelers' passing game back in those days was pretty awful. They didn't make many big plays, with the exception of Louis Lipps. I believe Bubby went the entire '90 season with a long TD pass of 20 yards. LOL!!! He actually played decent that year though. His 20 TD passes marked the first time since the Terry Bradshaw days that a Steeler QB reached 20 TD passes.

    • @Paggy6668
      @Paggy6668 2 года назад +1

      Actually, Woodson was fully entrenched as the starting RC and in fact had an incredible year. It took until the last game of the season for him to allow a single TD pass. Hayward Jeffries beat him on a bomb in a game the Steelers completely shit the bed on. All they needed was a win to win the division, but got completely dominated by Cody "the Commander" Carlson who was filling in for an injured Warren Moon who had gotten hurt the week before against the Bills.

    • @Paggy6668
      @Paggy6668 2 года назад

      @@Biggdoom344 Definitely disappointing for sure. The ironic thing is that '90 team was much better overall than the '89 team that made the playoffs with the same 9-7 record. They had the best defense in football and their offense really started to come around after that dreadful start where they didn't score an offensive TD thru the first 4 games.
      Even more disappointing was the fact the in '90, the playoff format was expanded to include a 3rd wild card team from each conference and still they didn't get in. Unlike in '89 when they needed a minor miracle on the final week of the regular season, they just needed to win their own game against a backup QB against a team that they beat way back in week 2. Big letdown to say the least.

    • @Biggdoom344
      @Biggdoom344 2 года назад

      @@Paggy6668 that 89 team needed to win their last three, then hope the bengals, raiders and either the colts or dolphins had to lose their last three. Damn if it didn’t happen.

    • @Paggy6668
      @Paggy6668 2 года назад

      @@Biggdoom344 You're a little hazy on the details as none of those 4 teams lost their last 3. In fact, Indy, won 2 of their last 3, while the other 3 teams lost 2 of 3. Also, Miami wasn't the 4th variable. The Steelers had beaten Miami in that monsoon in Miami early that year 34-14, which gave them the head to head tie breaker in a 2 way tie, so even had Miami won on the final weekend they would only have tied the Steelers at 9-7.
      The fourth team was Cleveland, which played Houston in the dome on Saturday. A Cleveland loss would have put them at 8-7-1 which would have given Houston the division and knocked Cleveland below the Steelers for the final wild card. Of course, Cleveland scores a late TD to come from behind and win, thus giving them the division title and putting Houston as the 1st wild card.
      At this point, the Steelers needed everything to break right Sunday and Monday. They needed the Colts to lose @NO, the Raiders to lose @ NYG, themselves to win @ Tampa and Cincinnati to lose @Min on Monday night. Sunday went pretty smoothly as Indy got blown out and the Raiders got handled as well, albeit in a much closer game. Steelers took care of business in Tampa so it all came down to Monday night. Vikings dominated the 1st half but settled for 5 FGs and lead 22-7 at the half. Cincy rallied in the 2nd half and cut it to 22-21 in the 4th before the Vikings scored a late TD with under 4 mins left on an incredible 3rd and goal pass play in the corner to a backup TE to seal it. ABC had broadcast cameras in the home of Dwayne Woodruff or Keith Willis who were watching the game together. It was sheer jubilation after that clinching TD.
