Mason Crosby’s is the most impressive, the fact that he was going into the wind and still was only 3 yards short is crazy. If he had the wind at his back he could have made that from 70 or 71
Yea look at crosbo now
The craziest part is that Crosby is a great kicker, and his free kick with a full run up with the same distance as Justin Tucker's field goal.
@@TetraHydroCannabinolTHChe’s on the rams 🤣
The most impressive one was the only one in history that was actually successful. That was the only scenario where it was actually a good heads up play to take the fair catch because you had a legitimate shot at making the kick, and it actually mattered in terms of the score. The rest were just gimmick prayer plays done for the hell of it.
@@Rowgue51ehh, the first one was only 59 yards and was essentially a better version of doing a last second kick at half time
Did this in high school, refs didn’t even know it was a thing until one of our coaches showed them the rulebook
Did you make it
Lentwolf no high schooler can make that. And if they can then send him to the nfl
If he did that then the punter is probably garbage too.
Lentwolf I wasn’t the kicker, I was the punter. We managed to fair catch a few seconds before the first half ended. It was a 40-42 yard fg, but their rush blocked several extra points so we opted to the fair catch-kick to prevent a rush. Kick had the distance but went left
@@landrymiller for the brand
I love when they did it in London. You could see all of the Americans trying to explain what in the world was going on.
i'm american and i was confused watching it XD
I’m American and I have no idea what’s going on and I been watching nfl for around 14 years
@@LuminousGateway If you call for a fail catch, you can kick the ball in an attempt to score a field goal from that spot without snapping it and the defense has to stay at least 10 yards away until it's kicked. Otherwise it's treated like a usual field goal attempt.
@@jasonfischer8946 thanks bro
I wanna see Slye stay on the team. Really great story. The buff kicker gang.
One of the many rules madden excludes from their games lmao
I was just about to go try it 🤦🏾♂️ lol
Well tbh it’s not like they have to include every little thing. I doubt all the players are really pissed off because they can’t do a free kick that they’ll probably shank.
NumberOneJake yeah but just imagine playing around with it lol
NumberOneJake shouldn’t even be an excuse. If they are releasing the only nfl simulation game it should have that and at 60$.
Exactly what I was thinking
I'm surprised more teams don't do this at the end of first half. Like having your kicker get a running head start with no rush to kick the ball 60-70 yards is a better choice than taking a knee tbh.
How often are teams calling for a fair catch as the clock is running out in the first half?

In an alternate universe, Mason Crosby is the record holder for the longest field goal in NFL history because of the free kick
With a nice long 69 yard field goal
wouldnt be a field goal right because its a free kick? they are separate plays and therefor separate records right?
@romanmarcus14 It's basically a free uncontested field goal. Set up like a field goal with no tee and a holder, worth 3 pts, but opposing team is 10 yards back like a kick off. It's alternate way to get a field goal aka 3 pt kick.
It’s a free kick. Not a field goal. Therefore would not be the longest field goal.
@@MrHotshot1998you can also run up on it like a kickoff not like a regular field go so the record would be different

Hyped for the update
one of many examples of why Summeral and Madden were the best. No confusion, no surprise, they knew the sport inside and out so they knew this rule inside and out. Did not miss a beat, knew it might be coming, and had a colorful anecdote about it ready to go.
Just a shame they didn't get to broadcast a successful one, they'd have had so much fun.
Also, excellent work finding a clip of one that actually worked, because there sure haven't been many.
Fun fact about the free kick: It's the only rule still in effect from the very first American football games of 1869. Then any player that caught the ball on the fly kicked by the opposition was awarded a free kick.
When did the drop kick first originate?
@@troybaxterits a rule left from when american football was more similar to rugby
The only rule? Was there no tackling in the first game?

Dicker the kicker making history tonight
Man, I love the obscure rules! I remember watching the game with the Mason Crosby kick. Everyone was either really excited or totally confused.
So this is a holdover from rugby, where you could call "mark" and attempt a free kick. A similar rule exists in Australian rules football.
By rule, it can happen after any fair catch, but it's almost always done when there are just a few seconds left in the half to tack on some points but not enough time to mount a drive. Plus, if your kick doesn't score, the other team takes possession.
No tee is used because the ball has to make contact with the ground to be able to score points -- same logic behind a dropkick, or a held PAT/FG attempt.
Whos here after Dicker (chargers) just executed the 1st successful fair catch free kick since 1976 😎 I can't be the only one!
Who’s here because of Thursday night football chargers vs Broncos?
This happened my Senior year of high I made the All-Star team for my state, and our kicker did this free kick from about 60 yards out and made it! Absolutely insane.
As a Bears fan I gotta say it’s nice to see a kicking highlight that doesn’t make me depressed.
Here comes the depression. This was Week 8 Nov 3rd 1968. Take a wild guess who got his knee hurt the very next week.

Not sure why the Ravens don’t try this with Justin Tucker
Cuz they need to make a fair catch in the end of the first half

The day that someone actually makes this kick I wanna be there
Based on the longest field goal attempts made videos, Denver is your best bet
The bears did it in this video
CYRUSZ Datvirusz from the looks of it, we might be able to determine the bears did something good post civil war era, not sure tho
@@CLINT-THE-GREAT True. But the Bears kicked it from within the 45, PLUS that was back when the uprights were in front of the endzone instead of behind.
I would want to see it made around midfield in the modern era. Which I would imagine ( as a previous comment noted) the best place for that is Denver.
Its only a matter of time. The evolution in strength, stamina, and size is only going up in pros.
This potentially could have happened at the very end of the Ravens/49ers Super Bowl when Baltimore took the safety with 3 seconds left to make the score 34-31. But the Ravens' punter Sam Koch boomed a long free kick afterwards to eliminate the possibility of it. Had Koch made a poor kick and the 49ers fair caught it at say, around the 50, San Francisco could have attempted this.
The next day I called into Mike Francesa - the video is on my channel page - and said they still should have tried it (he disagreed).
Would you rather David Akers from 70 yards with no rush, or an off-the-cuff punt return scrum that wastes the entire clock? With a fair catch, even if you decide not to kick there’s still time to set up a real attempt at a final play. As speedy as Jacoby Jones was, letting him return the punt seems like it was the worst option.
Francesa also contended “how are you gonna get it there?”, but we do on occasion see a kicker boot one through the uprights on a kickoff from the 30 or 35 (Stephen Gostkowki used to do this regularly). I know the big difference is that you can’t use a tee for the fair catch kick, but you can get your full running start so I think it’s still worth a shot if you have a good kicker (and David Akers was one of the best ever, earlier that same season he kicked a record 63-yard field goal at Lambeau).
But I digress; this is all more than a decade ago now, as crazy as that seems.

Sees “free kick” and “nfl” in the title
*confused soccer noises*
fr except it's football not "sock-her"
I’m guessing this is one of those rules that was once relevant in the early football era, but still exists in the modern era despite being rarely applicable. Before professional teams had an actual “kicker” position, they would just have an offensive or defensive player do kicks and punts, and I can imagine that punts sometimes went so short that the other team could fair catch it within field goal range and earn a free kick from like 20 or 30 yards out. Which they would probably miss half the time anyway cause they were so bad at kicking back then.
Nope, this is a remnant of rugby that never got phased out
2:41 Vikings #47 was not happy about something right there man.

The dude yelling "why" at the end of Robbie Gould's kick sums up this video and this rule
Could someone explain to me why they don’t do this every time that it’s the last play of the half and they’re in fg range
It can only be done after a fair catch on a punt towards the end of a half. Also I think it has to be the last play of the half. Not sure how time can be left on the clock if that matters at all.
@@dmonsef I don’t think there is any time restriction, its just that if you miss with time left the other team gets it where you kicked from and you miss out on the chance for a TD.

Bruh, imagine losing the Super Bowl or a huge game to this shit😂😂
*UPDATE IT*
Do Drop Kicks. Only a few have been done, to my knowledge.
Same idea. The ball has to make contact with the ground in order for the kick to score points. That's why the fair catch kick is done without a tee.
Only reason dropkicks are so rare in American football is thar our ball got narrower and more pointed at the ends to make it more aerodynamic for forward passing, which meant a less reliable bounce. In rugby, where forward passes are illegal, the ball is fatter and more rounded at the ends, so it gets a better bounce when you dropkick it.
@@3ggshe11s The number of drop goals being scored or attempted is less both in Union and Leauge these days. Due to better defences, faster players and changing style of play and tactics. :(
@thaclancyfam2 There has not been to many Drop field goals in the modern era, however recently in exhibition games, there were a few drop kick-offs in last 10 years.
Do’ Great Overtime Moments” (reg. season and postseason)
1:50 homeboy actually made it, wow.
43 yards though, he had the benefit of the goal posts being on the goal line back then. If he didn't, bet he'd have missed. Has anyone even made it in the modern era since they moved the posts back?
It would still be 53 yards with a running start and no defence. He probably makes that. All the other ones are way longer, kickers make 53 yarders with defence in their face so that have to kick it higher reducing distance so he probably still makes it with the goalposts on the back on the endzone.

@trufiend138 yes

I love this rule. I wish they'd have it in Madden.
If you notice the holder of the Bear's free kick (at 1:50 or so) he was crouched behind the line of scrimmage so he isn't offsides. One of the announcers mentions this near the end by saying "why isn't the holder offsides?"
This and the drop kick 2pt conversion are by far the rarest things that can happen on an nfl field
