Railfanning the Rochelle Railroad Park - 3/5/2016

- With the blasted quiet zones coming into effect soon, Neededfour and I decided it would be most logical to have an outing at no other than the Rochelle Railroad Park, in Rochelle, Illinois. Rochelle has become quite popular among railfans for plenty of train traffic as well as plenty of places to film them. The Train Park offers the best in variety, as one could head up to the pavilion for higher shots, as well as down to the railroad crossings for plenty of horn action (while horns still blow, that is). Rochelle also houses one of the nation's few mainline quadruple diamonds, two tracks belonging to the Union Pacific, and the other 2 by the BNSF, and boy do the trains make a racket going over them. In the 4 hours we were there, we were able to catch 16 trains travel through, which even for Rochelle is a pretty lucky day! Speaking of trains, the 16 we caught were headed by:

(2:48) Train 2: Union Pacific AC44CW #6848 leading a coal train
(8:14, 10:44) Trains 3 and 4: Union Pacific AC44CWCTE #5565 leads a westbound intermodal and Union Pacific SD70M #???? leads a short eastbound intermodal/autorack train.
(11:48) Train 5: BNSF ES44DC #7015 leads a mixed manifest train
(15:08) Train 6: Union Pacific AC44CWCTE #6033 leads a tanker train
(17:54) Train 7: Union Pacific AC45CCTE #7698 leads a mixed manifest train, with a friendly wave from the conductor
(20:36) Train 8: Union Pacific ES44DC #8186 leads a slow intermodal train
(25:57) Train 9: BNSF ES44AC #5867 leads a tanker train, with some CSX DPU's at the rear
(29:57) Train 10: Union Pacific AC44CWCTE #5828 leads a mixed manifest train with Ex-Southern Pacific AC44CW #6310 at the rear
(36:25) Train 11: Union Pacific AC44CW #6797 leads a coal train
(39:30) Train 12: BNSF ES44C4 #6895 leads a Z-Train
(42:16) Train 13: Union Pacific SD70AH #8982 leads a short Z-train
(44:36, 46:20) Train 14: Westbound BNSF ES44AC #5983 leads a Z-Train with a horn show and a friendly wave from the engineer, with some eastbound construction equipment rolling by as well
(47:49, 49:54) Trains 15 and 16: Union Pacific AC44CWCTE #5709 leads an autorack train, with the engineer giving such an awesome horn show that it literally knocks my tripod over, and Union Pacific SD70ACe #8588 Z-Train races up the side
Even when the quiet zones go in, Rochelle and it's Railroad Park will always be a safe bet to go catch some good trains! T'was an amazing day, and I hope you enjoy the video!

Had a great, amazing time! Always is amazing to railfan with ya. Just wish my damned camera didn't die RIGHT WHEN THE UP TRAIN WITH THE PATCHED SP CAME BY. XD

Is there really a big difference between the coal hoppers @3:30 and the ones with triangular shoots??
Too late, they're already here on the UP. I'm on railstream, and horns are SILENT. Only one train honked because it was passing the end of a train.
Bnsf 6163 is now one of the 25th anniversary units

+Harold Smuck - Thanks! I agree, they do bounce and wobble over that crossover, especially on the track closer to the park. I love the sound they make going over it though!
Runnin' Eight and union pacific needs to repaint atleast 1 of their old SP units in a fresh SP "bloody nose" paint scheme.

Those crude oil trains worry me, crude oil trains pass through my hometown as well. What if one ever derails?
When that happens, I do not think you have to worry about anything anymore.
Do you know when the quiet zone goes into effect? I just recently moved within driving distance and I'm considering not making the trip out if there won't be horns
I'm not entirely sure when it goes into effect, they still have a few crossings to work on I believe. As far as I'm concerned it is not quiet right now, if you wanted my guess I'd say it will be in full effect by the end of this year.
Awesome video! Is Rochelle a Quiet Zone? (If it is, do a protest on ALL social media if you desire.) You don't have to though. I'm SURE the trains will still blow through the park XD...at least, I hope so... Nice catches! I'm pretty sure the wind blew your tripod over. Nice catch on the SP!
