The brilliance of this scene is that alien pops out of an area you could already see and it feels like he should have been visible before the big jump scare. On a rewatch you can make out his outline crouching there before the sting. It completely screws with your primeval instincts about scanning for danger -- separating predators from the surrounding jungle (notice how it kind of looks like a slice of vegetation *turns into him* rather than him pushing his way and emerging from deeper concealment). He's just green enough to blend in, you're not sure how deeply he was concealed in the leaves, and he comes out fast enough that your brain is jolted by being tricked into thinking you overlooked the spot where he was standing and staring right at you -- you mistook threat for surroundings and surroundings for threat which is about the worst mistake organisms can make. It's like having the rug pulled out from your nervous system.

This movie traumatized me. When I was a kid, my mother invited me to see a "beautiful extraterrestrial movie" (E.T. was my favorite movie, so I got hyped to see Signs when she invited me). Terrible. In this scene, the reporter said that the footage was from Passo Fundo, Brazil (I'm also a Brazilian living in the south, same state of Passo Fundo, and I hate Shyamalan for this) and when the alien showed up my mom cheered me up with: "ok, now I'm scared". Almost 20 years and this aliens still haunts me, so I think this is one of my favorites horror movies, a masterpiece

I vividly remember being at the movies and seeing this movie advertised, and then begging my mom to watch it. I was told no, of course. Then a few months after that I saw the poster for the movie at a blockbuster I was at. I asked my mom to rent it for me, and again was given a solid no. When I began dating my boyfriend in 2014 (I was 21) he mentioned this movie to me and asked if I had seen it. I jumped with excitement and told him I had never seen it and had actually forgotten about it after all these years. But now watching it as an adult and STILL jumping at scenes like this one... all I have to say is thank you momma for not allowing me to watch this. I wouldn’t have slept for weeks.
