    Honestly, this is the best video I've seen about hair extensions. I'm so tired of spending hundreds of dollars on low quality hair. Now I can make it EXACTLY how I want them. Thanks for this amazing video.

    peaked my curiosity. my daughter is interested in extentions, and got to love you tube.a thought, you're the more experienced with this method, but i do know sewing.instead of regular masking tape, there are blue or green painter's tape that leave less residue... an option.then with sewing, there are embroidery stabilzers ( water soluble, tear aways, etc....) that would help when sewing so that the thread wouldn't bunch/knot up. then also with sewing... if you started, say at least 1/2" in from the cut edge in a reverse stitch back to the cut edge... it won't bunch up as much and then when go forward, one could then hand knot the thread tails to be more secure, and they wouldn't be at the most outer edge. another thought, with quilting... when you first start, it's at zero stitch length.... do a few stitches at zero to lock the stich in place....then when you fold the hair over to stich in place, i would maybe start again before the cut/outer edge, go back, then forward, but using a double stich (not a double needle).

    Yep, these wefts hold pretty darn well. Fray check works, but if you want to super secure it, use a liquid nail adhesive. It will make your wefts stiffer than fray check, but I use nail glue on manufactured and my sewn wefts just to eliminate any shedding all together.

    Thank you so much for this informative video. Virgin hair can be quite expensive, and I hate to waste anything so I am always looking for creative ways to get more for less. I had purchased 22" premade wefts thinking I wanted hair that long, but I found myself cutting the length into a 10" layered hair cut. I've wondered what I could do with the remaining hair I'd cut as I could never just throw it away. After I watched your video, I made new wefts with the remaining length for a future custom hair piece, and I am so thankful to you for helping me achieve this with your very informative video. By the way, I sealed both sides of each weft after I sewed them with Weft Sealer purchased at Sally Beauty Supply in lieu of nail glue, and there has been no shedding of the wefts whatsoever. Thank you again!

    This is a really useful tutorial! Thank you for making and post it.I have some hair that I wore as woven in hair extensions when I was growing my hair out. I've held onto it and was wondering how I might be able to reuse it. Now I have a way. Some of the pieces of hair are shorter and I'm wondering if the turnover edge needs to be 2 inches as you have shown of if it can be shortened to about an inch?

    • @doctoredlocks

    Your technique is fantastic!!!!!
    I had some synthetic bulk hair so I tried this out on it to practice. I did not use heat to make the crease and it still worked wonderfully thank you so much for sharing. I did use of a piece of paper as the backing as you shared in another video just to keep the hair from getting caught in my feed. I was really amazed at how fast and easy this is to do. Really opens up possibilities for my clients and for me to make a little extra money making these for someone.

    So I have came across this video and this helped me out a lot with making my own hair wefts. Although, using masking tape is a giant pain in the rear whenever you're trying to have them hold the strands in place. As for sewing the wefts themselves, I was told to use a soluble embroidery stabilizer and it worked pretty well for me.

    This is just what I was looking for. I have quite a lot of link-type extensions that I no longer have in, but would love to create removable ones for different hairstyles when I'm on the mood. I have two questions about the process, though. After you have ironed the fold, does the top stitch go directly on top of the other stitching? And, do you then trim off the couple of inches of shorter hair that is now heading in the opposite direction? I just want to make sure I understand this before getting started. Thank you so much!

    You said it doesn't need to be a 2 inches width tape but if I used a 1 inch tape do I still have to leave 2 inches from the ending of the hair or will 1 be enough?

    • @doctoredlocks
      @doctoredlocks  7 лет назад

      You can try it - the thing about leaving more of a fold is so that the hair doesn't shed out as easily. It doesn't have anything to do with the tape width. There aren't any hard fast rules with these things, but the tighter your stitches and if you use any adhesives to seal it, the less of a fold you can have.

    I believe this one was universal. Honestly, I'm not terribly sure it matters since you aren't sewing through fabric you intend to keep nice. Any of the types should work. If you do find that you have a preference, let me know your thoughts! I'd love to be able to share that info. :)

    oh wow, a very nice accurate way of making your own wefts, I love this method as well, I prefer wefting on a single needle, I think its probably much easier to weft on a sinlgle needle machine, I do have double needle, thats sometimes gives me hard time to filling it with thread )) By the way its pretty interesting that you use that sticky tape on the hairs, that looks amazing and makes your wefting look nice. thank U great Video.

  • @elsemusic3550
    @elsemusic3550 4 года назад +1

    i have a question... using this method, you will end up with some really short hair mixed in with the long hair (from where you fold it over)... is that normal? do you leave it like that or cut it off?

    • @doctoredlocks
      @doctoredlocks  4 года назад

      What you'll find is that most commercial wefts will have this row of folded hair. The less blunt it is, the better, as it makes the fold line "softer." If you cut it off, you run the risk of having the hair slip more easily - but if you do the adhesive step and the hair is secure, you can try cutting it off. Just try to soften the line rather than cutting it in a blunt shape - because the line will be more obvious. Hopefully, that makes sense.

    Thank you so much for this really useful video. I’m hoping to make a few wefts with my own hair but didn’t know how. I will be using a single-needle macchine: could you confirm I would use just the zig-zag stitch to make the weft, or is it a simple straight line stitch? I ask because if it’s a zig zag it looks really small here. With gratitude 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

    just a few questions for you ^-^. You don't really do a close up of the hair after you've done all 4 passes. Are you spreading them out a little? like 2 close together with a small space for folding and then 2 more? Or are they all sort of on top of each other?
    Also, does it matter how much "tail" you're leaving to fold over? And finally, is there a way to sew a single weft without that folded edge? (the no sew wefts are the look I'm going for but I know that the sewn ones hold better and I will be reusing them). Thank you!!!

    When quite a bit of my hair started falling out last year I started collecting it to maybe use it for extensions. Luckily, I didn't go bald or anything but I can use it for extra volume and since I have wavy hair it's always hard to use regular extensions because as soon as a little humidity hits the patterns aren't matching at all anymore.
    So I'm going to clean out my nasty ass box with my year worth of hair, will try to follow the video, wash it, install it and tell y'all how it turned out. Wish me luck lol 😅

      I would always lean toward sewing when possible.
      The no sew wefts are just okay, but can degrade over time. Sewing will definitely create something more long term.

    Hello! Great video! How would I go about wefting dog fur that has been clipped off and not brushed? I would really appreciate your input on this?

    • @doctoredlocks
      @doctoredlocks  4 года назад

      Hmm...interesting question. That depends on your goals. This wefting technique relies on the hair being folded, so if it's not brushed, you might find that it's hard to sew across/fold, so I'd straighten it as much as you can first. Also, presuming that it will be pretty short, be sure your adhesive step is thoroughly saturated through so your hair doesn't slip from the stitches. Hope this is helpful! :)

    I'm using a singer and the hair is getting caught in the machine. Do you have a solution for this problem? Also two of the needles from my triple needle broke, I don't know why.

      Although it's been 4 years since the comment was posted, maybe this will help someone else.:
      1.It could be that the gap between tapes is too wide.
      2.Or: as you feed the hair under the foot, gently press your hands away from each other to provide a bit of tension to the "gap" hair.
      3.Your feed dogs (The little grippy things that sort of pop up to pull the fabric/hair through) might be coming up a bit too high and pulling hairs down with them. Most machines have a throat plate adjustment lever where you can raise the throat plate. (This is normally done when machine darning, free-form quilting. or making a bar tack/zipper stop.) However, if you raise the plate too high, the feed dogs will not grip enough, and stitches will be uneven.
      I haven't tried this but I wonder if a layer of thin tissue paper over the gap would work?
      As to the needles, my guess is either the throat plate hole is too narrow for a triple needle, or the needle is off center maybe?

    If using this idea to make a rag doll for a child. Do you think your no-sew video option will work for this idea or is it better and more secure to use the sewing option?

    • @doctoredlocks

      The wefts will be more secure with this method.

    When making a human hair weft, when you are all done, do you just leave the extra few inches of fold over or do you cut it off? I am making my own weft and then I am going to use it to make bangs.

    This is amazing!! So well explained too. Just wondering, if I use synthetic/kanekalon hair, how should I secure the fold without heat? And should the fold be in the middle of synthetic hair instead of nearer the end? Thank you so much!

    • @doctoredlocks
      @doctoredlocks  5 лет назад +2

      You are super duper welcome! If you are using a lower temp fiber, just use a lower temp heat for the fold. When I'm using synthetics, I always fold near the center - that way you don't have to deal with the return hairs. :)

    • @mxfetishfortune7206
      @mxfetishfortune7206 2 года назад

      You can still use heat- it depends on if the fiber you're using is high heat or low. You should experiment qnd see what works for you, whether its using q regular steamer or careful application or an iron overtop of a damp towel

      I was thinking that too?

    • @doctoredlocks
      @doctoredlocks  6 лет назад +3

      You want an ample amount because it will settle and pull a bit - if it pulls free from the weft, then you basically lose all of your work. You can try it with less - feel free to experiment until you find the right length for you. You might find that you can get away with less for your designs. :)

    Nice. I’m very greatful for your teachings .
    So it’s ok to have the fold with human hair?
    So there would be a inch or two or shorter hairs at the top.
    They don’t need to be cut away they are safe and normal to be there?

    • @doctoredlocks
      @doctoredlocks  5 лет назад +1

      Correct. Just don't fold it in half. That is safe for synthetics, but not human hair.

    Hi! I'm trying to preserve my baby's very red hair for an album, and I'm wondering if this type of wefting would hold up for that? And if not, is there anything you could suggest for it?

    • @doctoredlocks
      @doctoredlocks  3 года назад

      It's not likely that you would have enough for a weft, but it ultimately depends on the amount and length you have. Wefts work well when you can stand to lose an inch or two from the fold.

    I made this with a serger because my standard sewing machine is missing a power cable. it turned out pretty well, but I cant seem to keep the seam from unraveling without applying glue all along the seam, which makes them a bit stiff. Do you have any suggestions for preventing the seam from unraveling without glue? I'm a sewing machine noob, as you can see.

    • @doctoredlocks
      @doctoredlocks  8 лет назад

      I don't. Sergers use a much different stitch than a standard machine, so I'm not really familiar with how yours is turning out. In my experience, my sergers stitch has never been able to get as tight as my sewing machine.

    Hi, good work 👌🏻. I'm wondering if you could help please.. I have some hand weft bundles of hair and I'm looking to convert it to a machine weft as seen in your video. Can you help do this and how much will you be willing to charge.

      We don't have a wefting service, but you might be able to Google that. We only show people how to do it so they can do it on their own. :) Good luck!

    I have a question, let's say you want to make wefts of hair specific for braiding so the hair would be not spread out almost at all, would this method still work or require extra stitching? Or, could I make a weft like you do in this video and just roll up the weft like a rug and then braid it?

  • @doctoredlocks
    @doctoredlocks  11 лет назад +3

    If done properly, it shouldn't shed. Try using a nail glue across your weft. That will eliminate ALL shedding. :)
