  • Using free pallets and reclaimed wood to make the base and floor for my strawbale shed. Rather than buy wood new, I found a wood reclaim project nearby where I could get materials to construct the base of the building. The pallets were free and the 8"x2" was half the normal price!! I am trying as much as possible to use reclaimed / salvaged or natural materials for the construction of this project. It can be a bit challenging as this means things are not usually in standard sizes so you have to be adaptable, but I think the outcome is still good quality.
If anyone is in the local area and is interested about where I got the wood check out the link below:

Strawbales are one of a number of natural building techniques that are ideally suited to temperate climates, especially where straw is readily available. Its a waste material and it is storing the carbon in the straw as it doesn't break down. As long as they aren't being transported long distances they are an really sustainable material.
Be sure to check out my other videos in this series to get an idea of how a small building like this can be constructed. It's not the only way but it will give you an idea if you are looking to try it out yourself.

Hello! Thanks for the video series, I'm thinking about building one of these myself. If you don't mind my asking, did you have any trouble with critters burrowing upwards into the bales, particularly where those notches are cut out? Thanks!!
Eta: Oh dear never mind, watched further on ...

What are the stakes made of?

Also, how is the frame fixed to the tires?

@@slaplapdog The stakes are hazel that I got from a local woodsman. The frame is not fixed to the tyres. The weight of the final structure is more than sufficient to keep it in place, especially as we are in a sheltered site

Thank you for sharing your experience.
I am designing a structure to be built of pallets and tires, every bit of knowledge helps.
