How have i never heard of Alan Dawson before
He's more well known as a teacher than a player, but obviously he could really play. Just mastery.
Dude was so underrated IMO he was Steve Smiths drum teacher at Berkeley and you can here alot of Alan's influence in Steve's playing Alan was just so musical very inspirational
Dawson was a master of vocab and phrasing. The level of clarity he brought to the kit was insane. While his legacy lives on through drummers who study his rudimental ritual, I still think he’s massively underrated compared to the other greats of his era.
Great sounding cymbals
YESSSSSSS
Keith Copelands teacher, unique, polished and above all so musical. Thank you.
So awesome🥁
Awesome job!
BRAVO!!
Great job with the transcription. 👍👍

Nice 🎼🥁🎵🎶Very nice 🥁
That’s crazy, I just did this transcription for school this semester. Turned it in a week ago, but came looking for it again to listen to the solo again and here this is.
Wow I love that ! So, have you seen some differences between our transcriptions ? I'll be trying to post some other stuff here, and as soon as I can play drums again I'll try to play this monster solo, definitely challenging.
NarrowCoon yeah, they’re pretty close, but there are a few differences. I’d post the video of me playing it but even if I had executed it perfectly, it’d be significantly slower than the original. I’ll see if I can figure out how to send you the file on here so you can look at what I wrote down.
Okay, so I’m not seeing any way to message you, I can email it to you if you wanna look at it.

Looking forward to see your version of the solo too if you put it online !
0:33 So Cool!
I agree, now I use this phrase in most of my jazz solos :) (at slower tempos tho, but it works well)
Yes ! Super transcription !

Any tips on getting my bass drum to sound like this. It’s so fucking amazing. I’m assuming he’s not using any internal muffling.
Interesting question. His bass drum sounds a bit dampened imo. There's something I like to make personally for jazz: it's using a towel and place it between the pedal and the bass drum head. You can adjust the dampening with this, and keep the bass drum fully open inside (no internal muffling), it can be a cool compromise.
Superb drumming 😊
ou peut on avoir la partition ?
