    Not too often you see John smiling during a performance like that. and who can blame him? That was loads of fun to listen to.

      I listened to it live, it is even more impressive than a recording! The sound texture that Williams created is very impressive.

      You are right. But while I'm sure Mr. Williams surely did not mean it, I must say that his smile is actually a bit impish and even sinister looking here, although it is quite fitting of the piece.

      @@mydogskips2 I think he really likes this piece, and it shows in his face- he's having fun here. Works extremely well in the context of the film too, but then, this is Williams we're talking about - he is genuinely without equal in that sphere.

    Only TWO words exemplify the power of music in film: JOHN. WILLIAMS.

    This score is such an under-rated masterpiece. I've seen John Williams conduct at the Hollywood Bowl 3 times and the Walt Disney Concert Hall once and this is just not performed in public much. It's so inventive. The tennis music calls for the timpanist to use TENNIS BALLS on the timpani! This overture is such a banger from the first down beat.

    John Williams’ scores are so perfect they seem familiar from the first listen, as though this note always follows that note, just because it SHOULD…

      The sign of a master, he makes it look effortless but, believe me, it isn't. I've tried.

      You are welcome. Those videos were originally uploaded with a japanese
      description. I decided to uploaded them with english description because
      it is much easier for non japanese to find them.

    The Witches of Eastwick, along with Hook are (for me) the last scores Wiiliams wrote with any true passion.
    Everything he did after that felt like he'd lost his love for it all - yes, even Jurassic Park which felt a tad too tired to me. He had a few breaths of life afterwards: Duel of the Fates, Rey's theme but most of the new Star Wars stuff and HP felt jaded and not at all memorable. Just my opinion.
    But going back to this... an absolute modern classic. Beautiful.

    Is this an alternate version of "Dance of the Witches" that's retitled "The Devil's Dance," or did you assign the wrong title to this (absolutely fabulous!!) piece?

    What are the percussion devices/instruments used at 1:13 to 1:20? They are, to me, large metal sheets, but I have not seen -- at least in my orchestration texts -- anything referenced as "large metal sheets" [/s not intended] Is there a specific name for these?

    • @fattyfranz4272
      @fattyfranz4272 Год назад

      I think they're called "thunder sheets." You can also hear them in Richard Strauss' Eine Alpensinfonie.
