That was Steve Walsh on lead vocal. In my opinion, he was one of rock’s greatest voices. 5:32

Formed in 1970, Kansas (the band) rose to fame in the 70's w/ their brand of progressive rock ... debuted in 1974... 'Carry on wayward son' became their biggest single in 1976 from their 4th album 'Leftoverture'... which sold 4x platinum (4 million copies) in the US and pushed their first 3 albums to gold sales (half million copies) ... Their 5th album 'Point of know return' in 1977 sold 4x platinum as well w/ the hit single 'Dust in the wind'... Steve Walsh (lead vocals/ keyboards) was their most famous vocalist, along with Kerry Livgren (synths/ guitar), Rich Williams (guitar), Phil Ehart (drums), Robby Steinhardt (violin/ viola/ vocals) and Dave Hope (bass)
Despite Kansas losing their commercial appeal in the 80's, they maintained their career... recording and touring for their loyal fans into the 90's... Former Deep Purple/ Dixie Dregs guitarist Steve Morse was a member of Kansas in the 80's... he joined Deep Purple in 1994 until 2022.
Kansas released their 16th studio album 'The absence of presence' in 2020 w/ only Phil Ehart (drums) and Rich Williams (guitar) from the original band... the current members include Ronnie Platt (lead vocals/ keyboards), Billy Greer (bass/ vocals), Zak Rizvi (guitar), Tom Brislin (keyboards/ vocals) and Joe Deninzon (violins) ... and they still tour.

I know Philippinas have beautiful voices and you are opera trained but have you ever thought of using your talents towards Rock orientated music? I was in like 10th grade when this song by Kansas came out. But Steve Walsh had one of the top 10 voices in music ever. Strong didnt take effort to belt out anything he sang. Remember Pat Benitar. Linda Rondstat were both educated in the same art you have been. Both had a awesome career in Rock. And Anne Wilson of heart could have sang Opera easily. And she had the best female voices ever in history of music. She was with Heart. And if you would like to hear her voice one song would be the Dream Of The Archer Heart Little Queen Album.

One of my fav 3 songs in the world. I still listen to it every night at work. Music from my era ( 70's) . I love your interpretation of this classic. The lyrics have meaning when you really listen to them. You are delightful and beautiful and gifted with talent. The many cymbal crashes in this song are great. I love hearing the cymbal crashes. It is said that " they don't make them/music like that anymore " for a reason and I think you see what I mean and agree with. 7-10-minute songs were common, not really caring so much about radio play time, but more about their craft and the song itself. Led Zepplin never release a single for radio play until the entire album was finished. Today, it's make quick record and "get it out there fast" little quality anymore. Every time you think the song is ending, BAM another riff. lol
    HAHA.

    Mabuhay, kaibigan! Kamusta, dear Aaliyah.
Like many of their contemporaries, Kansas was far more than just a Rock band. They were considered a Progressive Rock (Prog) band, with a heavy influence from Classical as much as Rock, Jazz, Folk, Blues and R&B. The changeups in parts to this song echo the different pieces in Classical, each to represent a different feel to the song. They could play a multitude of styles as all members were raised learning more than just one type of music. Most Prog musicians are also multi-instrumentalists. It's one of the many reasons I don't care for the majority of modern acts as most can play only one style and it gets very boring very quickly.
I highly recommend exploring Kansas further, particularly the beautiful Dust In The Wind. In that one, the harmony vocalist here adds his ability to play the perfect violin solo.
    Ingat ka, dear Aaliyah. ♥
By the way, my granddaughter Alliyah, in Cavite, gets baptised next week. ♥

Back when they toured this album for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to Red Rocks Colorado(God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls. 300 miles each way with roughly $1 a gallon for gas on bikes. Hell yeah.😎😎
I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (Harrah's former outdoor venue) Still killin' it.
    I still have this LP./Album.
"Point of Know Return" and "Dust in the Wind" are two other awesome songs from that era 45 years ago.

Like a great starting pitcher in baseball, Kansas can change speeds and locations from the classic rock bangers like Carry on to the lament in Dust in the Wind to the more pop oriented title track from Point of No Return. All of them were excellent musicians. Kerry Livgren, the blond playing lead in this video, won a grammy by playing every instrument on his solo project, "One of Several Possible Musiks (IIRC, final word had an alternate spelling)." Ronnie James Dio saw them in concert and was blown away by the drummer. Several members of the band contributed to the writing process. On vocals, Steve Walsh could sing with anyone. Their challenge, at least commercially, was they didn't fit a pre-pegged hole. Their music floated between genres and the casual listener to FM rock radio in the 70s didn't associate them with any given style. I love their style and have been a loyal supporter since Left Overture.

Nice reaction. A couple of other songs you may want to consider listening to would be “Point Of No Return” and “Hold On”. Have a good day!

Wait until you hear the big red headed Viking looking dude there's only singing background vocals on this and playing tambourine when he gets into his role. Dust in the Wind would be a good example although it's slow and atmospheric. But that dude can sing too and has so much presence.

Great music belted out of the radio day and night back then. We were so spoiled we didn't have a clue it could just fade away.

"What's Up?" is a song by American rock group 4 Non Blondes, released in March 1993 by Interscope and Atlantic Records as the second single from their debut album, Bigger, Better, Faster, More! (1992). The song was written by lead singer Linda Perry. She has outstanding vocal range.

I'm 63. I want to say that it gave me a great thrill (i mean that in a clean way) watching you enjoy this music. Saddens me that most of your generation prefers that talent-less, thump thump RAP noise.

Thanks for showcasing this classic, Aaliyah! A little treat for you to watch will come in my next comment (right after this one). But it does contain a link (to another YT video).
So that comment will get blocked, at first. Just to let you know that there will be this blocked comment.
But I bet you'll like it. It's about a classicly trained musician, who built himself loudspeakers. A bit "off topic". But sure worth watching.

Kansas' unique fusion of rock, classical, and other genres was exceptionally creative. They achieved enormous commercial success in the second half of the 1970s with the albums 'Leftoverture' and 'Point of Know Return' taking them to superstardom. The singles "Carry on Wayward Son" and "Point of Know Return" became staples of AOR radio, while the hit "Dust in the Wind" became the band's biggest singles success and a crossover classic. However, those songs are just a fraction of the expansive and diverse musical world that Kansas has to offer.
Album tracks like "Miracles Out of Nowhere," "The Wall," and "Song for America" exemplify the band's progressive tendencies and intricate musical arrangements. From the epic storytelling in songs like "The Pinnacle" and "Cheyenne Anthem" to the hard-hitting rock of "Belexes" and "Portrait (He Knew)," the band's repertoire is rich and varied. In the '80s, Kansas moved towards a more streamlined rock sound with a greater emphasis on radio-friendly hits, the highest charting of which were "Play the Game," "Fight Fire with Fire," and the more pop-oriented "All I Wanted."
Exploring Kansas' catalog reveals a treasure trove of musical innovation, artistic creativity, and emotional depth that truly sets them apart, transitioning as they did from formidable progressive rock artists to mainstream success. - Ultimate Classic Rock (edited)

This one always brings memories and maybe a sting of tears to my eyes as it reminds me of my best friend in the 80's.
We met by chance, as all great friendships start and were inseparable for years ... and then he came into significant money (being a relative of Richard Burton he got a bequest when he turned twenty one) ... and then he found drugs.
That downward spiral lead to his death and thus, Wayward Son is a magnificent song that comes with a cargo of sadness for me.

Still not sure anyone over the age of 15 hasn't heard at least part of this song. Considering it was used as the theme song for the TV show Supernatural (2005 to 2020). Which is still in reruns on several channels.

An iconic cornerstone of classic rock...has it all. Really glad you enjoyed it. You bring a unique perspective to the analysis & your commentary is insightful...i would ask one question however; what did you think of the lyrics? Most songs are rubbish when it comes to the lyrical depth vut these guys are unique. Would have been interesting to hear your opinions on the message.
