  • Early 1984, 2UW Sydney change to the MAGIC 11 format or Tragic 11 given its short lived run, didn't make Xmas 1984.
It sounds like Holger Brockman doing this voice over for Magic 11.

The look on people's faces around the boardroom when the format and name change was announced to staff on Friday January 20th will never leave me!

You would think we could learn from our mistakes. Magic 11 in 1984. Vega in 2005. Classic Rock in 2009. All of 2SM post 1988.

The best 2UW was in the 60's when they changed their spots to "The New UW"...and one of the promos on it was "Even granny tunes her tranny to the New UW"- recorded by the now late, but great Ward "Pally" Austin who, with his wonderful UW on air collegues, shot 2UW to top ratings in no time at all...sadly one of those collegues, Tony McLaren, died in a boating accident..loved listening to him too, he was sadly missed by all his fans....Ward's Sunday show was 2nd to none.

2UW (and Magic 11) in the early-mid 1980s were famous for conducting surveys that they ignored. They ran full page ads in the Sunday papers that included sections that you filled out and rated hundreds of songs and DJs out of ten. These surveys were mailed to the studios in Neutral Bay and were shredded without even being read.
Mind you I loved The New 2UW in 1980- 81. Its slogan was Better Music and Less Commercials. It certainly gave 2SM, 2WS, 2Day and Triple M a run for their money for a year or two.

2UW's finest years were 1980 to 1983, and if I could stretch it, 1984, 2UW started going down hill when they started playing all that baby boomer rot. As far as Magic 11 commencing 6:00 am on Monday 23rd January 1984, their first two songs were the Beach Boys "Heroes and Villains, then Splitenz's "Message to my girl".
I remember listening to Rick Melbourne (with a very young Kayley Harris and Rula the coffee lady) in the mornings, with his 60 minute challenges. Always placed a smile on ones face when getting up on those cold winter mornings for school during 1982 1983. Anyone remember Wacka MacCartney who done evenings for a short time during 1983, and still remember Trevor Sinclair announcing the "Great Summer Stash" worth $10,000. This was some competition they had over the summer of 1983 to 1984. One could listen to Casey Kasem's "American Top 40" Sunday mornings from 6:00 am. Endless mix tapes were made from Sunday night's top 40, from memory either hosted by Trevor or Ron E Sparks. Classic hits was somewhat listenable from 1985 to 1988 with Bazz and Pilko who were the best breakfast hosts I've ever heard, but from 1989 both 2Day FM and 2UW had lost the plot.

Even the voiceover guy doesn't sound all that convinced about Magic 11 lol

Yep I was there for that announcement. Dead silence when that happened.

History is repeating again come 20th January 2014 when MIX 106.5 (previously 2UW 1107 until 1994) is to become KIIS 106.5 playing CHR pop music already heard on 2 Day FM and Nova 96.9. KIIS 106.5 (just like Magic 11) will not last by years end.

Looks like its 2DayFM that wont survive by the end of 2014!!

nickatnights I'm still surprised and shock at the result that KIIS have paided off for ARN.
      Still surprised though.
Thought KIIS would go the same way as what has happened to 2UW 30 years ago when they become Magic 11. Thought KIIS was gonna fail and rebranded back as MIX by year end.
If 2 Day goes downhill SCA would have to rethink it's future. Possibly put 2 Day to what it used to be originally and change to an easy listening format to compete with Smooth FM.
