I tom I am 70s years old I had a heart operation two years ago so I had to stay home. After one year I had to do something with my life since I was recuperating from the surgery. So I decided to follow up on my dream that started when I was 15 years old to become a Lid guitar player..So I went to music school for two years, this is 55 years ago. The teacher always told me that I had the music in me and not to give up . But not long after that I and my family emigrated to Canada that was the end of my dream, till last year..Since I had much time on hand I bought a Stratocaster and started taking music lessons again..Then I discovered you, Tom, on youtube..Started lessening to your guitar and ( Man you are amesing ) I love lessening to your guitar and the songs you play ..So I started following you trying to keep up with you and slowly since last summer with the help of your Tabs I started playing my guitar and enjoying myself, and now I want to play like you or close. I now play over 30 songs and I am not giving up my music lessons..Any advice from you will be appreciated..Thank you, Tom. And I am proud to give you my membership....Ang
Really inspiring me.. 2 years back I bought an stratocaster electric guitar. My dream comes true after 30 years...I too follow Mr.Tom. also doing my trinity grade exams. surf guitar cover means that is Tom. You are great player..🎉❤ Thank you.
I wonder how many thousands of people learned how to play guitar from listening to the Ventures. I sure did. What a great group they were. Tom, this is as good as it gets.
I used to practice “Walk, Don’t Run” but I was never good at it. I got to see the Ventures in Winnipeg. Nokie Edwards started by looking like a fair backup member then played lead guitar like an angel. Brilliant stuff!
I am one of those whose first band gig as a teen was playing many of the Ventures tunes. Thank you, Tom, for bringing back some wonderful memories of great music on your channel.
when i was a kid, here in argentine, my grandfather watched the tv show "crime story" and this song was played at the intro (o shannon version, i thikn) and always liked the song, not the show. now i can play it, thanks
Great sounding fender jazzmaster. Really sounds awesome. Certainly thousands of guitar players learned from records. In fact "Play Guitar like the Ventures" circa 60s was top seller.
I play this song a lot (it is really fun to play!), and come back here occasionally to make sure I have not strayed too far from your original. I have a few things I have slightly modified, along with the one section with the slides and hammer-ons due to a little arthritis, but mostly staying true. Doing quite well with Unchained Melody, but still having a hard time not making a mistake or two (this was/is a tough song for me!) At least I am now able to cover them so that my audience can't really tell. I have also completed several other songs of yours and now working on Because and Secret Agent Man. Thanks for all the work you put into your covers with tabs and backing tracks which I think are the best on RUclips. I can't imagine how much time you put into them!
Thanks so much Tom for the great music you provide and another feature on your videos I just found by accident. There is a play back speed option I didn’t know about until just now. It may have always been there but I didn’t know about and glad to have it.
Now that I have 2 of your songs down pretty good, I printed out and pasted up the tabs for Runaway and was up to around 3 AM this morning having a blast with the much faster pace than Sleepwalk and Summer Place. This is the first song that I am totally learning on my new guitar, a HAZE Jazzmaster copy instead of a Stratocaster VG and boy does it come close to looking and sounding just like your Jazzmaster. Makes it that much more fun! Thanks again for posting your incredible collection of great songs!
Amazing as always Mr Tom!! Your Ventures covers aré always outstanding with that great groovy sound!! I love the Ventures covers that you do!! Thanks for sharing!! 👍 👍 🎸 🎸
🚩Tom.. I Have to Give you a Huge Shout Out⭐ Hands Down one of The Best!! That's pretty High Praise. You and that Jazzmaster ARE ONE! NO OTHER GUITAR would work with you so perfectly! I do anything to get some of these Songs on 1 Page. But kinda broke. Tks for What I do. Your ⭐
Ordered and received backing tracks #3 and started with Runaway. Reminds me of the times when my band was learning new songs....Gosh, those first sessions started off terribly, but as we practiced we got better and better and this is exactly what I am going through now. With Sleepwalk, I kept the first recording I played with your backing track and had my wife listen to it and told her that was exactly what the band sounded like with our first attempt at a new song. She thought it was pretty funny. Man, that was fun! Thanks!!
Great lead break in the middle of the song. If I remember correctly, that was done on keyboard in the original song.? But Tom nailed it on guitar, outstanding, thanx for the memories.😃
Do you know by any chance who played the version that was in the TV series Crime Story during the end credits? That one was my favorite version of Runaway
@@tomcon21 Hi Tom, thanks for your answer. I'm not so sure. I have never been ablate find a version with Dale that has that guitar solo :( I'll keep looking for it because it was really sick :)
@@tomcon21 Me neither, or any recording with it at all. I have not found the original series in any format either, that's why it became a mystery to me.
Well, I am now doing pretty well following you at 75% of speed with just a few mistakes. I have also upgraded my Haze HSJA Jazzmaster with Schaller locking tuners and an AVRI Fender tremolo and this thing is playing really great. If I had known that I would like a Jazzmaster this much, I would have purchased one years ago. I loved my Tele and Strats, but this JM, I can't keep my hands off of it! I still might buy a Fender like yours eventually, but I would like to play one to see if it is really that much better. Anyway, I have downloaded Unchained Melody and started to work on it today. Thanks for all you have done and please be safe!
Thank you so much for the comment. I’m glad you’re enjoying playing. I used to think Teles were my favorite but when I got this JM, there was no turning back! I hope you stay well and safe!
@@tomcon21 Back again and still enjoying learning your songs.. Working on Johnny B Goode (yes, I have played some of it for years, but now want to learn the whole song). Also, recently downloaded and learning Can't take my Eyes off you. Like learning more than one song at a time. Lastly, After a 9 month wait, Last Sept, I finally got a new Fender AmPro II Jazzmaster and been really enjoying playing it. I gave my Haze JM to my 15 year old granddaughter who I have been teaching. She is an awesome student....but I am biased! Thanks again for all you do.
It helps to have a Jazzmaster. I recently bought a Haze Jazzmaster (aka the Surfmaster) and I can play along with nearly the identical tones...love it.
Hi Tom, I purchased both of your backing track packs. they are awesome! I started learning this assuming it was in there but i don't see it. Can you make this backing track available?
Exelent cover! Tom, it would be a great Christmas present if you upload backing track "Close to Champaign" by Los Straitjackets. I learned it not so long ago and would like to play with backing. Please.
Hi Tom, will you be publishing the backing track for Runaway? I'm not ready for it yet (I ran into a brick wall in measures 24/25,...so simple but...chipping away at it!). Thank you
Hi Tom, have most of the notes memorized, and doing quite well with the two measures I was having difficulty with, but still need the tabs in some places just to help keep me on track. Now working on getting my speed up accurately. Also, started learning "Because, by Dave Clark". I like to start a new project before I finish one as it keeps me going. My wife has given me a list of your covers she wants me to learn, and because is the first one.

Thanks for the great videos and tabs. Can I ask why you don't include the timing in your tabs. It would sure help. Thanks!
I could be wrong by I think many people do not read rhythm notation. Also, the rhythm is clear because you hear and see it in the video performance.
