- Today we're going on a deep dive into "The Last Beta Player" by @Mongster83.
A Minecraft movie that enthralled me for it's entire runtime, it's a unique and incredibly fresh take on the oversaturated genre that is Minecraft ARG / Horror.

The little hints that David is used to playing modern versions of minecraft, like right clicking to equip armor or dragging items really add to this. He hasnt been playing beta for the past 10 years, refusing to play newer versions, he _chose_ to go back to beta. Maybe he wanted the simplicity of the old versions, maybe he was just nostalgic. This is reaching a bit, but I think something happened to David, something that made him turn to this old, nostalgic, _comforting_ version of minecraft. But then things start getting weirder and weirder, and he becomes more and more paranoid. You could read it as a metaphor, the anxieties of life seeping in to places we used to find comfort in, until it hits a breaking point. Deleting the world at the end felt really sad, something he put time and effort in to, something peaceful in his life, gone forever.
i like this way of thinking
Maybe he got tired of the mob vote or something
im so happy his name ISNT ANDREW
For the 900th time
@@kjashmirferra he might have found the real peace outside
46:50 ngl it made me realize something about the herobrine creepypasta, people usually depict herobrine as this super powerful evil entity who wants to kill you,
but in the original herobrine creepypasta herobrine never really does anything malicious, he really is only there in the world.. existing... a ghost running aimlessly in a empty world doing things with seemingly no rhyme or reason.
I befriended him, and now he helps me build and mine and whatnot. Really cool dude, it sucks that he gets such a bad wrap for no reason.
Really just a gigachad minecraft buddy.
@@RoseWitchMaple jokes aside, that would be a really cool mod. Have Herobrine run around your world doing his thing, you can befriend him and then you can tell him to tag along on your spelunking, much like an Elder Scrolls/Fallout companion.
@@BastetFurryBros gonna put the hero in herobrine
Reminds me of the different versions of Bigfoot. Some he's malicious, some he's just chilling
People think that because of the song and the mod
The most realistic Part about this is that r/Minecraft moderators removed his legitimate questions
i mean it wasnt a legitimate question, calm 4 doesn't play and he knew that, he just needed the shot of the Reddit post for his video
@@dumb0999it wasn't, unlike ones that are removed all the time
it's SO funny dude. like this guy tried so hard to get some realism for his minecraft horror video and just ended up getting his posts removed for being stupid
@@CybenX_yt that is realism
Thats what r*dditors are like
The reddit post is the most realistic thing. I once asked for a datapack or something to increase netherite spawn just to have an easier time and i get people hardcore arguing 'just cheat it in if you dont wanna play the game' with mass downvotes or whatever. Some suggesting it in the 'its singleplayer it doesnt matter lol' way when i just wanted the server with my friends to be more casual.
Dang, man. People really just kick others for no reason. I don't think there's a "Right" way to play minecraft, and a datapack is literally just a tiny mod to make things easier.
Ah yes because stripmining for netherite is such a riveting and exciting experience!
Never, ever use Reddit unless it’s for technical troubleshooting and there’s already a thread for it. Only thing it’s good for. Personal experience there
@@cloud1973 IF YOU WANT TO BYPASS THE GAME ANYWAYS JUST USE CHEATS TO GET ENTIRE STACKS LOL?
Redditors are subhuman and pathetic, what's new?
I like how his paranoia is seen with how much armor he equips as it goes on. Going from a calm completely chill player to completely and utterly on edge.
"weird village that i did not build"
i won't escape that video anytime soon, huh?
@@troneysauce "weird response i did not write"
@@troneysauce man, that video was a banger, obviously not
@@troneysauce that video was genuinely one of the best and most-indepth research I've ever seen, on any topic. that forum poster was the true hero for having all those files, but you did an incredible job
@@troneysauceweird heart i did not add
The biggest thing for me that added to the realism: he didn't scream or anything when he was jumpscared or came across something unexplainable. Just a sharp nose inhale. That's exactly how the vast majority of people playing alone would respond.
Exactly! When I play any game and get startled or scared by something, I don’t go: “AHH!!!” Instead I jump or flinch a little and do a sharp inhale. Well, except for those times when I get *really* scared lol
Occasionally let a "jeez..." but most of the time I wouldn't talk on my own.
@@anitakim_ honestly when i get jumpscared i just say a very very unamused "Ahh" or "Oh" (i cannot scream in my house so 😭)
also the need to quit the game as quick as possible. Release the tension
I'd say it depends, for me it ranges from nothing to a slight jump in my heart to a scream. It usually depends on the situation
The use of Calm4 in the cave was brilliant. It's such a weird, off-putting track on its own, but in this situation? It's an escape sequence track, and it's perfect for it. It's more energetic than the normal backing tracks, and in this situation, more frantic. 10/10
Is that what started playing at 15:59?
@@mrdiamondore1014yea
i only caught this because someone mentioned it in the comments, but i absolutely love that the sign changes to say goodbye in the final shot, makes me think the entity that did this (possibly mc itself like you said) is almost a bit smug, cause theres no way that our protag could have seen that, it just seems a lil unessacary, but also theres the more wholesome interpretation of this going along with what you said as this being beta mc saying goodbye to david, and being happy that it can finally rest
I remember I’d be like “I used to be so scared when playing minecraft when it first came out” and people would be making fun of me. mongster’s video really captured that old minecraft creepy atmosphere
the next video will be: "A strange youtube video i did not build"
Jokes aside, excellent video, as always. I'll only be able to finish it tomorrow actually, but it's still amazing to see the quality you put into your videos.
thanks azu
I think you just prophesied his latest video lmao
At 9:04 I could just FEEL the immediate "NOPE-" the way he IMMEDIATELY backed away and turned to stare at the rest of the cave-
"Hey there's this song that embodied the visceral fear that you get when you enter a room and a boss health bar appears, what should we call it?"
"Uhh, Calm4?"
Can we talk on how he never had any wood with him? It's such a trauma for me that I have at least a half stack of logs in my inventory, this guy is not ok.
Love your vids, please continue, I'm really happy for ytb algorithm recommending you.
Didn't get the coal when they were out of torches either, even though they had sticks in their inventory.
The reason this video is great is because its a scary story IN Minecraft and is not using a Minecraft to tell a story. It works because it uses what makes Minecraft unnerving and the fears we might've had while playing, especially during the old versions.
you hit the nail on the head on why i like this video so much. its not just that the playing/acting is so human, but also because everything about it is so relatable to a beta player. getting startled by skeleton arrows and calm4, getting lost in the labyrinthian cave generation, or going out in the world desperately trying to find clay, its all stuff anyone who has played old minecraft has experienced before. its so clearly full of love towards the golden age community as well, like the dialko video or the ONE helpful person in the reddit threads being called "themastercarver" lmao. it all just makes the experience feel so raw and real.
The paranoia of hearing footsteps not knowing if it's a delayed sfx, or mobs walking, or someone else walking in your single player world matched with the creeped out feeling of unfamiliarity really put the cherry on top
The red square 🟥
oh no....it's back, oh no, please save us
What stood out to me watching the video was that the village used a lot of mossy cobblestone. In earlier versions, that stuff was super rare to come by, because you'd only find it on the floor of dungeons. So someone just building a whole village with mossy cobblestone isn't something that's actually going to happen, and you only have that block in naturally generated structures.
LITERALLY! I'm surprised he didn't cover that, I was so weirded out that mossy cobblestone was there, on the surface, on a building.
@CharaDreemurr-UT BTW I watched some of Mongster's behind the scenes stuff, and he actually got all the moss legitimately, and said the project drained his storage of it
@@kappasphere That's an interesting detail, kinda cool he went all the way to find it! Thx for sharing that ;D

I had no idea it was unconfirmed whether or not calm4 would play in minecraft? I swear I heard it in game myself once. As is the general consensus, it scared the shit out of me
The reason I added it myself was because that’s what happened to me. I was so shocked to hear it, it really caught me off guard
i believe it was almost definitely in the game at some point, but the way that sound resources were downloaded rather than stored in version files, plus the lack of credible videos of it playing means its technically not 100% proven.
i love how when you see one of his reddit posts, there's the comment "you know the game's been updated a few times in the last decade right?"
paired with him opening a high-energy youtube short and disliking it, it really reinforces the idea of him being alone in this endeavor; everyone else has moved on to the more modern thing, he is the last beta player.
The cobblestone hut scene gets me every time. The tension is so thick, it's amazing
Yo! He had the most genuine reaction to spotting that sign by his house. Spinning around and looking behind him immediately irl is the most genuine reaction I've ever seen
The Last Beta Player made me feel like so nostalgic. I remember playing like that, and everyone had stories of weird things happening to their worlds.
You are awesome. I hope you go back and find old, ancient, or defunct Minecraft ARGs or mystery videos such as Strange House and just pour some analytics into them. The beating your head against the wall investigation was so nice and relaxing, along with your somewhat random chatting with your friend. I kinda wish they had been in this video as well, but I have no clue how that would have worked.
I scare very easily but I was able to sit through this whole video :) I appreciate that you didnt put scary music or sounds or anything in the background (yes thats how easy i scare 😅), it makes it so much nicer for me, I loved the strange house i did not build videos too! Ive watched them like 4 times each lol

I was pondering weather to watch this since ive already seen "The last beta player", but then I realised its your channel so I stayed. And out of topic, YOUR PICTURES AND ART IS AMAZING HOLY SHIT???? THATS SO COOL
thank you :DDDDD
the least calm song ever being called “calm 4” is mind boggling tbh
I like the idea that entity isn't evil, it just want to say "stop being stuck in the past, it did already happen and what matters is the present, it's time to move on".
As someone who finds herself playing beta in a poor attempt to hang onto 12-13 year old memories; this feels like a personal attack.
Great video! And great movie as well, it's so refreshing to see a creepy minecraft ARG not immediately destroy all suspension of disbelief by introducing some "admin dimension" or shadow entities or whatever. It really keeps riding the line of "oh well this could be some weird data corruption" (strange torch I did not break, strange calm4 i did not play). Andhaving a live cam of the player as well keeps it grounded nicely. Sometimes in some ARGs it feels like the creators forget that minecraft is a game and act like they are embodying their player character directly and minecraft is real life. Here the acting makes it feel super believable as just some guy trying to play old mc and being spooked but also intrigued by the weird stuff he sees
I hope you make more videos of the kind because the way you present info is rly neat (Shoutout to the section at 30:50) and it seems u have a good eye for non-slop mc horror
🙏
I hate the "Minecraft is real life and you realize you're in a simulation" trope there's always some players named like VORT101 and VORT102 and then VORT403 and so on with pitch black skins just stalking you and then all of a sudden you cross an acacia door and you're in the VORTEX admin dimension or whatever (btw if anyone wanna do this go ahead lmao)
it's so overdone, seeing something like the one on the video is very refreshing
Hi calamity guy
the part you mentioned in the comment is genuinely so well done, very clever
This is EXACTLY my thought. Having the IRL cam and showing him going on Reddit really sold it for me. With other ARGs that are about shadow entities and weird admin dimensions with souls getting trapped in the game and such it really destroys my suspension of disbelief cause I think "Wait... so this kid just goes to school, has dinner with his family, then logs onto minecraft to stop these world-ending entities... and then just turns off the computer and goes to bed???" Like you said, it's more believable here since it's just "weird corruption, anyone know why this happened?"
I wouldn't call it ARG
2:17 and finally, after 50 minutes I can finally start watching the 54 minutes video
You are probably my favorite minecraft guy, you just sound so genuinely interested in what you talk about and I love it, already waiting for the next vid
thank you!!
I have no idea if this was intentional or not, but my favorite subtle "scare" of this movie is the pumpkin that was staring right at David the first time he stumbled across the beta village. Little details like that absolutely sell it for me, even if, again, it wasn't intentional. Love it.
I took it as a little detail, as in... Looking directly at the first thing distracting your mind ... Then boom 🤯, village.
I fall in love with your chanel dude please never stop uploading videos
13:37 bro still got 5 sticks and there was coal in that cave. He could've just mine some and get 20 more torches.

Breath of the Wild guardian theme
I’m glad I have your analysis of this.
I completely missed all the footsteps and stuff, and was quite confused what had him so scared when he ran away from his base, and I even missed LITERALLY EVERYTHING except the ice breaking in David’s cobblestone hut on the ice.
When I read the title "A Player Haunted By His Own Minecraft World," I was expecting the world itself to be haunting him. Like, whenever he would try to play the newest version of Minecraft, remnants from his old beta world would occasionally make their way in. He could be out exploring an open field and randomly stumble upon his old beta house. Or he could be out mining and randomly come across manmade tunnels and it turns out to be a carbon copy of his old beta mine. Maybe some blocks could start breaking out of nowhere and it turns out that it was mimicking the actions he took during an old beta let's-play he did, even down to which blocks he broke and the pauses he took in between the breaking of each block. It almost reverses the message of the movie; instead of a man learning to let go of the past, it's a man who has moved on from the past but is constantly haunted by it.
That is actually a really cool idea. I'm writing that shit down.
I found you the DAY you posted your first video with like 500 views. and holy shit dude your ability to tell a story is crazy and so captivating. I literally watch your videos 4-5 times just to get the entire thing.
I watched your first three videos consecutively, people who have done RUclips for 10+ years don’t put this much effort and love into their videos. I’m not usually a long video watcher when it comes to RUclips, but I have to say these videos have me HOOKED!
I can seriously tell how much effort and time went into making them, and I will definitely be watching video number four here soon. I am not mad at all that I spent this much time watching these videos consecutively, and I will happily recommend them to friends of mine. Please keep up the amazing work.
imho "The last beta player" is the best depiction of Herobrine and the creepy rumours of the old era of minecraft,no cringey over the top crap, just uneasy and odd stuff that could or could not be the fault of minecraft's janky code, until it all stops making any sense, best part is the player never even died or got directly attacked by whatever was followin/happening around him,he just got chased off the game.
this reminds me of an old seed on MCPE that would put you underground in a perfect spherical room with grass.
youd have to punch through stone for like an hour to escape into this odd world.
this seed was known as the 'herobrine' seed that we played as kids. IDK if anybody else remembers that or not but I believe the seed was just "Ss"
if anybody else remembers this as being a thing let me know, my sister told me about it when i was little and we played on it together but idk who told her and she isnt the type of person to use youtube or browse online so idk if anybody else even knows about it.
Probably just some odd generation glitch but ive never experienced anything like it since
Okay, that dark cave chase was awesome. Very tense, the low light and everything. Good stuff.
And nice narration too, I like the tone and cadence. 👍
Agreed on the down to earth writing of this show, it feels more real than some of the crazy super sized conspiracies with cabals of shadow people and what not.
Really glad you’re continuing this kind of thing (calling it an explanation video or something doesn’t feel like it does it justice).
👀
"the third video will be like 20 to 30 minutes" he said, not realising he is now cursed to make hour long lullabies...
Reminds me of AndrewGaming's arg, where Andrew himself doesn't want to face the change of the game, reminising about his time playing Halo with his friend Chris, even the colour pallet of the arg is this kind of bloomy and saturated shader that makes it look like OG Minecraft. His ARG is nowhere near the authentic feel of this one, it's actually a polar opposite as it has different characters, acting, structures that you cannot argue in any way shape or form are genarated naturally by the game, spooky stuff going on, and ghosts of the past reaching out to him, but it's still immensely well-made and enjoyable. Then there was this one that later on turns out the guy who is covering the ARG is part of it himself as a last-minute twist. All in all, you are absolutely right, when an arg is made with passion and love for both the horror genre and the game it takes place in it's a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

I recommend a minecraft arg parody series by Oneshef. It's very good and funny. Its called something like "minecraft arg but the protagonist is tired" There are multiple videos in the universe, and i recommend all of them. They are all so good, and he needs more recognition
I'm catching up with some of the newer videos and it's actually so fucking hype
there’s no point in looking in to them if it is just compiled funny clips and no lore, I agree they are very funny but the videos just speak for themselves
I like the ones where there's no commentary. It makes it even funnier when I'm able to imagine the protag's emotions.
@@stephaniegiacco7524 but there is lore. It's all a connection story
i think the series's status as a parody enhances the bits of horror in there, too; the parts with hungry and souler wouldn't be nearly as scary (and would honestly be. not scary at all lmao) if the majority of the series wasn't satire. also hiiii another collinlock16 fan!!!!

Not only is the video so good, but the way you analyze the video made me captivated to watch it all the way through even after eating my dinner. I literally forgot to clean my dishes while watching this video for more than 30 minutes. This analysis video is so simple (in how it's edited) yet i really liked the way you narrate it. It's not like one of those ARG analysis videos where i can literally predict each words the narrator would say because not only does minecraft ARGs been so cliche, but also the videos analyzing them too.
Love the clips you made throughout the video. Had to subscribe after that little sign that said subscribe halfway through the video. Keep it up!!

sleep token mentioned (also thank you)
I can understand seeking out old versions, I look back fondly on my days playing legacy console edition. Im an adult now, and that scares me, I wish I could feel like that again. But I cant, life moves in with or without me. I realize what is happening now is going to be someones else's childhood to look back on, we're not nostalgic for just the game, but for how we were then, young, untroubled by the world. Modern Minecraft is beautiful, I find comfort in it, it may not be what I once new, but it's still Minecraft, It never left, it grew up with me. by learning to let go, I found a new perspective, and feel great about each new addition, I remember booting up my 360 and getting on after an updste and exploring what was new, Now, I Boot up the same game, just on a different platform, and find joy in what is new, and what I grew up with is still there, just with a fresh coat of paint.
