Chadi… strictly speaking for self defence… would you consider any type of wrestling without Gi more valuable than Judo with Gi? I mean things like no-Gi submission grappling (aka BJJ no gi), catch wrestling, or No-Gi judo more valuable for self defence? I think in a way comes down to all the arsenal of leg grabs plus techniques that work with or without clothing compared to techniques that require a “handle”.

@@pablotapiafineart For defense, you need both Gi Judo & No-Gi Judo.
Unless you live in tropical or subtropical country or island where it's never cold, you will experience cold climate and hot climate.
In cold months people wear coats and other clothing.
Gi Judo builds a good base that modifies easily to No-Gi.
But No-Gi doesn't modify so easily to Gi, without much practice.
During Pre-War Kodokan Judo the Japanese school boys trained both Gi and No-Gi
He's spot on. Original Judo was a complete combat system. It was basically MMA with Dogi. The current rules have made it watered down almost beyond recognition.
I think the only way to save Judo is to have other organizations with different rule sets, as with bjj. They don't have to be big events in the beginning. When they attract a lot of Judokas, they will automatically be internationally recognized.
@@Reflectionmaterial I am not expert in Judo. That will be upto the Judokas who are very unhappy with the current rulset. For example , they want leg techniques back. Maybe they can come up with a safe way of doing leg grabs. Another example would be an extended time for ground fighting rather than stopping the fight as soon as they hit the ground. As I said, this will be a task for the Judokas.
@@pastlast158 I can tell you as someone who was in judo for a long time (and still am to a small degree) that the biggest problem I notice is they constantly change the rules and there are too many ways to be penalized.
@@hhattonaom9729 That is true as well. My understanding from the unhappy Judokas is that the current powerful organization keeps cutting Judo to smaller and smaller piece. Other organizations should be formed to take the monopoly away from the current institution and provide more diversity to Judo rule sets. Then, it will be upto the Judokas which event they would want to participate. Take the different bjj events as an example. IBJJF, Quintet, Polaris, CJJ, etc.
@@Reflectionmaterial Let refs penalize stalling. If you trust refs to know whether something was a failed attack or a false attack, then you can trust them to judge whether a leg grab is an honest attempt at an attack or just stalling
Others do exist... They've just failed to get big. Most judo is IJF and associated NGBs so it's hard to be popular with other rulesets unless the NGB doesn't follow IJF rules.

石井さんは綺麗事や建前が嫌いなのでしょう。正直である事や公平である事が大切であるということを知っているのでしょう。これこそが武道の精神の一部だと思う。しかしながら、今の日本は組織の上に行けば行くほど権威主義で忖度だらけで腐り切っている。これでは石井さんの様な人は海外に出てしまうだろう。もちろん海外でも腐敗はあるだろうけれど。
ただ、最近の日本の柔道界は変わろうとしている様に感じる。ドンマイ川端さんの様な活動を認めているというのは、従来の柔道界には無かったと思う。

It was great to hear what Ishii had to say, very respectful but very straight forward and direct.
Ishii was perfectly clear.He is a true fighter,a true japanese fighter.Japan wins the Olympic games with leg grabbing or without it.
olympics have been bad for judo. just as it was for wrestling, boxing, etc. the modern versions of these "sports" are only simulations of things that were once representative of real things. arbitrary rulesets and scoring systems mean training to win competition is literally ingraining many "bad habits" from the perspective of the actual martial art it is pretending to represent. i dont question whether japan can win the olympics, i only question when they will realize it is a vain and stupid thing to value. olympics are for status, social approval, etc. people who love judo the martial art are still out there im sure, training in obscurity with fellow lovers of the art kano founded, who would not trade the real for an arbitrary simulation, no matter how much the shallow society around them throws money and fame at olympians. another way to put it is that the olympics represent the absolute worst part of modern japan - that being the americanized consumeristic side. the side that stands against everything the various diverse cultural groups of old japan stood for. the old men in western suits, with western values, and western lifestyles.
Have you seen what Olympic has done to TaeKwondo? it killed the hands and now, it has become leg fencing game with players not fighters, wearing tights in the upcoming games......
Ishii broke his neck in 2009 and underwent surgery.
He had another revision surgery 2years ago.

@@andrewstephens8790I have the same feeling with bjj rulesets, "position over submission" is important, however they forget to apply that in the standing game, you can not neglect that and just sit down, bjj is judo in essence.
I understand why people say bjj is not practical in self defense. Which is not true, most fights end in the ground, but is a last chance situation, you don't want to go to a last chance situation from the beginning. Ideally you want to win with a judo standing throw, so you ready to run if you need. Correct mindset is:
Standing position>throws>ground position>submission
@@daniwall4614 100% agree on bjj and the ibjjf mirrors the olympics in this regard. they outlawed leg attacks and created a terrible point system. if youre brazilian and get your values from peer pressure, then you might still value ibjjf championships, but all the true grapplers are gravitating to nogi. which i might point out was the style of "wrestling" at the actual greek olympics, but which is a category at neither the modern olympics, nor at the ibjjf championships. also note that neither freestyle wrestling nor so called greco-roman wrestling were in the actual olympics, and that greco-roman was invented by a napoleonic soldier in 1840s who outlawed grips below the waist, submissions, and cranks, all of which actual greek wrestling had.

Banning leg grabs resulted in many Judoka not even learning effective throws anymore such as Te Garuma. . .once very important throw taught to military and police to take down, capture & control, a prisoner.

Quand je faisait du judo étant enfant ( en France ), on attrapait les jambes librement. J'ai toujours gardé cet esprit, et maintenant ça me fait mal de voir ça interdit ( même à l'entraînement, alors que personne n'ira faire de la compétition aux jeux olympiques ! ).
Si ta croisade pouvait porter ses fruits, j'en serais le premier ravi.

Chadi you rassumption that judo would attrackt more people and participants with leg grabs is also absolutely correct. The same also goes for longer ne-waza time. But I think that is precisely the reason why the cut ithese aspects in the first place. They do not want people from other grappling sports to do well in judo. God forbid if someone with a wrestling or bjj background wins a prestigeous judo torunament... Thats the same reason why they make it difficult for judoka to compete in other martial arts. They want to build a wall around judo and if they have to ban 50% of the techiques and take the athletes hostage, then so be it.
27歳から50歳まで柔道を続けてきましたが、やめました。大きな理由の一つは両足タックルが禁止になったからです。乱取りで倒してもケチをつけてくる人がでてきたのです。相手を倒す競技なのに足を手で刈ってはいけないという規則は全く理にかないません。
近年では柔道ではなく柔術の人気が出てきたのも、柔術が技を広く認めていることに要因があるように思われます。
現在私はMMAのジムに通い４年が経ちました。競技を変えてよかったと思っています。

Je n'ai plus pratiqué le judo depuis plus de 20 ans, mais le judo m'intéresse toujours, comme tout les sports de combat et leur application, leur usage en situation réelle ou en MMA. Alors l'avis d'une légende pareille ayant fait la transition du Judo au MMA, forcément je trouve ça enrichissant.
Je comprends sa volonté de ne pas vouloir filmer le stage, mais j'aurais adoré voir ça. Le Judo traditionnel, en tant que sport m'intéresse, mais son application en situation réelle m'intéresse bien plus encore.

Another great video. I found his comment about the IJF leader not being a Judoka very interesting. Since back in the mid 80's the IJF took over ruling authority from the Kodokan for similar reasons. Their argument being, Kano's son (or grandson?) was in charge of the Kodokan, but wasn't a Judoka. Even though he respected Jigoro Kano's vision for Judo much more than the IJF.
It caused a split in Japanese Judo which many of the top Japanese Judoka didn't participate in the 86 Asian Games. The Japanese didn't win as many medals as usual.
I never knew about Kano's concerns that politics would effect Judo if it was in the Olympics. He was absolutely right. If you look at all of the restrictive rules, you can find political motivations at their root.
But if Judo didn't go to the Olympics it would be practically dead.
@@ricardokerscherActually Judo was quite popular as self defense in the 50's and 60's before it was in the Olympics.
While I agree that the Olympics certainly brought a lot more people into the Judo community: I disagree that Judo would be nearly dead. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing doesn't matter. It is what it is.
But with the popularity of international competition comes the politics of international competition. As a result, the practicality and self defense aspects of Judo have suffered because of that politics.
MMA is NOT an Olympic Sport and it’s the fastest growing right now more than any Olympic Sports combined
The sportivization of Judo was necessary for it to reach the size it has and to influence basically all other styles of martial arts.
It's obvious that we made a mistake in only considering Judo as a sport, which wasn't even Jigoro Kano's objective, but without it becoming an Olympic sport, Judo would basically be like aikido, or something similar. Some dojo scattered around. @@jackfisher1921

Can someone break down (or recommend a video) breaking down a history of the various judo rule changes, and how each one impacted the sport, as well as the justification for each change?
The justifications are hard to find I guess. It's even hard to find justifications for current rules, maybe you'll find them in some judoka telling the reason they heard from somewhere else or it's told in the hour-/day long seminars which are often held after the Mittersil training camp... well even at those daylong seminars they only present the rules and are pretty short about the justifications, just accept the new rules as set and don't you dare to question them.
For nostalgic reason: do you remember the times when men fought 5 minutes and women 4 minutes, when you could add up infinite numbers of waza-ari or whe 4 waza-ari add up to awasete ippon? (I pretty much liked the 4 waza-ari - rule... show some dominance and more positive scores are possible but finish it after 4 scores because of superiority...)

I watched Sensei Ishii compete at the USA Judo Senior nationals several years ago. His opponent in the finals was very good but knew he would likely lose. So he did something that probably violates the spirit of judo but was tactically brilliant. When he turned in for uchi mata he would bring his knee up high as if he was going to deliver a knee strike. As an mma fighter it was a reflex action for Ishii to use his hands to block the knee which resulted in his disqualification. Optics were terrible for a gold medalist to be disqualified at a US tournament that doesn’t even qualify toward international ranking.

I don't think so, because I suppose in some martial arts you can hit eyes, testicles, as well as in real life use your teeth in close combat, etc. Or you can hit withouth gloves, which can make a real difference in karate as far as I know. So I imagine it's a good test, but not the ultimate one.

If he ever wanted to cross over into the world of pro wrestling, he could always run an angle as the son of NJPW's Tomohiro Ishii. THAT is who i was searching about when i found this and assumed it was from when he was younger.
Unfortunately Ishii is another case of elite judoka that not migrated well into MMA and Grappling. He wasn't dominant in those sports like he was in his primary martial art. But I appreciate him even more because he is always testing himself in other martial arts, he is not in his comfort zone. Really nice to see him doing really well in K1.

All sport organizations become politics and people with money and don't know the martial art lead it into watering it down and making it stupid for pop culture. Taekwondo went the way of Judo and so is Karate.

I agree Ishi about problem of changing rules, but Regarding with “education “ I don’t think so, before Ishi’s generation already haven’t paid attention to 精力善用 自他共栄. Judo is just one kind of combat sports .

Chadi this is unrealted to this topic but I was watching some of your older episodes of Kito Ryu and felt compelled to asked what style of Jujutsu were you taught-- Generally is Kawaishi's Jujutsu/Judo mandatory to be learnt with Judo in France (once again Generally speaking)

In fact it has no sens at all to imagine Sumo at the Olympics, it's so Japanese. And you have to live in a heya, etc. But I love Sumo. And about the Olympics, it was a shame Hakuho couldn't appear in Tokyo Olympics ceremonies...

So sad. Such good athletes turn down Judo because of the politics. I personally know of two high ranking judoka ( Both top 30 or high in world ranking ) who left judo because of this.

Judo is bleeding practitioners. Since 2004, the numbers of practitioners plumbed by half in Japan (according to the All Japan Judo Federation). The Americas is pretty much dominated by BJJ and MMA now. So it is better to make Judo interesting for people, or no...

All the rule changes are why I gave up. Every time Japanese start to loose they make the techniques they loose to illegal. Russian grips, leg grabs etc etc. It's going to kill Judo if they keep it up.
