I followed your advice and did this to my hanging baskets. Its producing more top flowers now. New flowers are growing out and spreading around the basket giving it a healthier look. Thanks so much for sharing.
Jean- I can relate to your hesitation about cutting back the flowers - however, I can vouch by following Bill's recommendation that this definitely works. I have a beautiful petunia hanging basket which I cut back maybe every 2 weeks -yes I know ,it is heartbreaking for me too but the results are amazing -I have a magnificent basket full of wonderful blooms - which are really the centre piece - I also feed mine at least 3 times a week and dead head at least 4 times a week.
Great Video about maintaining hanging basket flowers! I, too, was sad to see all the beautiful flowers go, but know that the plant will put more on. Do an update next week please. I do wonder, do you fertilize them when watering and how often, if you do?
I would like to see this plant next week. its hard to believe it will be back in bushy full bloom. I have had dozens of hanging plants thru the years & I never had the heart to trim off all that beauty. I guess i just need to shut my eyes & SHOP!!
It won't look the same as when i cut it back in 1 week however it will have some more colour and be showy still for my guests :) I will shoot an update video on sunday (that will be 1 week) I will likely upload the video on Wednesday.
So re your fertilizer routine, I planted all my containers in container soil with fertilizer good up to 9 months in early June. None are doing as well as I expected and were subjected to June and July frequent rains. Could fertilizer be depleted?
it's possible.. I would add more fertilizer... i personally like to use some slow release when i plant... but still feed with a weak fertilizer each time i water. I think that really helps.
Hi, I have just started with hanging baskets, this is my first year. I have mine for 2 weeks now. Where I have it, is outside downstair in my back patio. There is alot of shade there. Will you think my flowers will last? My flowers are samiliar to yours. Or should I get another type of hanging plant or flower that will do better in the shade with little sun?
+Ellie Nai Lee That depends on the amount of shade... this might work... but to be honest this group of plants should really be in full sun. but 4 or 5 hours of direct sun should be OK
I LOVE these but every summer my hanging pots will look beautiful for a couple months then they tend to get dry and brittle at the base of the plant. I've tried pruning regularly & moving locations but nothing has seemed to help.. any advice is appreciated
pruning is a big part of keeping it lush... but I find a bigger issue is watering... when the plants mature and their root system fills the pot... when it dries out it's really hard to rehydrate the soil... try soaking the pot in a bucket of water for 30 min... to really soak the soil again... in summer baskets seem to need water 2 times a day... soaking should be able to buy you a little time.
Sure you can pinch back impatiens... start by trimming 2 or 3 stems and see where they branch... then when growth appears trim some more branches :) Have fun with it :)
If you keep the soil moist it should work... otherwise you need to make a little greenhouse for the cuttings... they like lots of humidity while trying to root
Very beautiful basket, Bill. Can you pls tell me the name of the plant that you pruned first, second and the name of the flower in the centre? Thank you.
The first one is a variety of Million Bells Petunia (Calibrachoa) the second is a trailing verbena the plant in the center is a dipladenia (a type of mandevilla)
PlantzNThings Thank you so much. I just LOVE gardening. I recently moved from India to US. I m yet to get accustomed with the plants that live here. I bought two orchids and a mint plant few days back getting inspired by your videos. Orchids are doing well, but the mint seem to be wilting dnt know why :( hope it gets well. Thanks again Bill
Bill - Would love to show you the basket - but my skills are very limited - but have got my son to take a photo of it and if you permit I will send directly to you and perhaps you could share with everyone. Take care Sharon
Sharon Cox Sure Sharon. Feel free to send them to my email.. bevensbill@gmail.com i will post the photos to the Plantznthings what's growing page for you :)
im very nevous to do this. i have a bunch of hanging baskets of petunias for my wedding that make up the alter area. its in a month so they should be back and booming by the time the wedding is? i think im going to do this now but this is very nerve racking for me.
so annoying, it would be great if you just get on with the video. no one cares about the glare of the sun or even if you've got guests coming over next week!

Sharon.... you really need to share some photos on the Plantznthings what's growing page on Facebook :) I would love to see them.
first time. Informative i.e. water during rain, pruning too hard. Subscribed.
Thank you so much for answering. I’ll try a weak regimen of fertilizing. Again, thank you.
Would have been nice to show the same plant after week one and two.

I try and fertilize every second watering with my Miracle grow auto spray and feed thing... minimum 2 feedings a month.
Thanks. They are gorgeous!!!
Super clear and helpful video. Thanks!
Maintaining the hanging basket....gorgeous

Mine are the same. Now they look half dead. I will follow these tips and hopefully to bring them back to life. Thank you!
can you do the same with Impatients. I have some in a basket, they're getting really leggy. would it survive after.
Sure you can pinch back impatiens... start by trimming 2 or 3 stems and see where they branch... then when growth appears trim some more branches :) Have fun with it :)
Can I replant the cuttings in the same basket?
If you keep the soil moist it should work... otherwise you need to make a little greenhouse for the cuttings... they like lots of humidity while trying to root
Somehow I can manage to kill even calibrachoa baskets! Would you know why the leafy undergrowth would brown and dry up even though the soil is wet?
You might be overwatering... the soil should never stay wet.
i like your video

Hey Bill, this looks great! Can you give me a name for the plant with the dark flowers?
They are a variety of million bells petunia (Calibrachoa) They are my favorite plant to grow in planters outside.

What he failed to do is show us the plant a week later with the promised regrowth. We have to take his word for the results.
