    I bought two Salvia plants at the nursery and what a wonderful plant for all sorts of bees and butterflies. They were similar to yours, but the foliage was darker and all parts of the plant are highly fragrant when crushed. I cut them back like you did, but I made as many cuttings as i could and simply put them in a jar with tap water. In about a month they had produced roots, and I had another 15 plants. I repeated the process, again and again and filled the garden with the plants. What I like most, is the flowering time, all year round just cut them back like you did. In a hot summer a little watering every 2-3 days will keep them going.

      You put your clippings with whatever is left of the bloom still attached at the top of the spike into water as is? And it grows roots and becomes a new plant?

    • @garyrock2356
      @garyrock2356 Год назад +26

      @@jak30341 No, I obey normal cutting rules using what I've cut off. That is cut below a node, then snip the top off, leaving a couple of leaves. The cutting should be long enough to stand in the jar with the node at the bottom. One piece may give you 2 to 3 cuttings, so long as you've got a node at the bottom and a couple of leaves at the top of the cutting, this plant isn't fussy.

    PLUS you can cut off the flowers on the stems you cut off and place the rest of the stems in water and let them root and you will have lots more plants for your yard. Take off the bottom leaves you don't want them in the water leave the ones on top alone.🌵🌵 oops just read that everyone has the same idea suggestion.🤣🤣😂😂🤣🤣

    I was going to add that those cuttings could also be potted for making new plants.
    Just a bit of rooting powder and moist soil in a clay pot and in a few weeks, new plants to add to your garden.
    I love propagating as many perennials as possible and usually give them to other family gardeners.
    Your garden is looking great!

      @@maureenmckenna5220 I'm only just learning myself but yes it seems there are many perennials that work like this. You can just search youtube for titles like "how to propagate salvia from cuttings" and substitute in other plant names as well, or "how to propagate perennials." I think there's a bit of technique involved to have the highest success rate but plenty of videos to teach us out there.

    • @maureenmckenna5220
      @maureenmckenna5220 Год назад +1

      @@JWHealing Thanks for the encouragement and information. I have been able to propagate Autumn Joy sedum, in spite of my own failings, because it just seeds itself close to an area where it is growing. After many years, I have seven, three of which are huge, sedum, one of which must be dug up next year to make room for air. I know I can cut these and just stick them in the ground and they will grow. I am going to try and give the established plants, rooted and all, to some gardeners nearby, as I know how expensive they can be. I also have three year old serendipity allium that look like they could be divided next year easily. But, these are all dug from the ground up, and dividing is not like propagating, which is tough in the summer sun and heat of Virginia. But, plant life has become so expensive that it just might be worth it.

    Hello. Yes, this is exactly how I’ve always pruned all my salvias - for the simple reason that my hummingbirds love them as a source of nectar. So, I never wanted to totally eliminate their food source, therefore I also only prune 1/2-2/3 of the plant in such a way, as to reduce it in size, shape it, and leave enough stalks with flowers or soon to open flowers that the bees, hummingbirds, & other insects love it!! I’m glad you prune the same way.

I live in Arkansas so our climates are different but the smart ideas you have are universal working for everyone and I think inclusion is so very important when we all have different processes hoping for success. Gardeners are the hardest working people, we will work our gardens from can till can't. That means from when we can see till when we can't in the heat of summer and cold of winter. Hope this message makes sense. People say I speak in riddles. Lol Here is a funny answer I came up with years ago you can share . When someone says to me I must have a green thumb; I say no its a brown thumb you have to keep your hands in the soil to be successful.

      Hi there, Yes, you can prune it back if its bloomed already. It should encourage it to send more blooms up. The second flush of blooms is not typically as prolific as the first, but you should still get some more which is nice. Thank you so much!☺

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  Год назад

      Hi Mickey, I wouldn't. I would wait until after it's bloomed before trimming. I wouldn't want to interfere with the plants cycle. Cutting on it now might signal the plant to send put more foliage instead of focusing on bloom production. Just my thoughts on it.

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  2 года назад +1

      Hi Mya!! Thank you!!! I do it with the Salvia and just a couple days ago the nepeta! Their growth habits are similar so it would likely work the same so I'm experimenting. It might not be as effective with things like coneflower (more singular/stemmed blooms) But might work on Phlox and bushy type plants that rebloom after a prune.

    • @aprilm9551

      I've seen gardening videos from England, and they do this on tall phlox. Possibly something to consider for various plants that do repeat blooming.

    What variety of Salvia is this? Do all salvias rebloom throughout the summer if pruned this way?
    My ‘May Night’ does not rebloom for me.

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  Год назад

      Hi Gail, this is the May Night variety. You typically get the 1st flush, and once those are done blooming, you can prune in this fashion to get a second and "third" flush. By staggering the Pruning, you have a succession of blooms coming up. This extends the bloom time on my Salvia from May through around the of end of July.
