    That comparison of the Autumn Joy sedum growth in part shade vs sun is fascinating. Side by side, there's the evidence of actual growth, and thanks so much for showing us! I am also a Massachusetts gardener and this year the rabbits have destroyed my white cone flowers. All you other suggestions are good choices and the rabbits leave them alone. It's funny as the cone flowers have been in my yard for over 10 years without any problems until this year. I guess the bunnies taste buds have changed.

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  2 года назад

      Hi there, Sorry to hear that. Each year brings new challenges right? I have a number of deer, rabbits, chipmunks, and even groundhogs that hang out in or around my garden. I'm constantly spraying something or trying to be vigilent. But they still get some things. I guess the key is to have so many things blooming that we don't notice lol. It is so disappointing though so I'm sorry this is happening to you. I hope the bunnies lose interest in your coneflowers, and you still get some this year. Is it possible to put something around them? Even a dollar tree laundry basket temporarily to see if they recover yet this year? They bloom for a long time so with some clever outsmarting you could potentially get a couple blooms.

      Hi there!! Yay another Massachusetts gardener, welcome!! Those scabiosa are great!! this is only my second year with them, and I'm already in love! They bloom for soooooo long!! I had some through frost last year! I just went through last night and cut mine all back to encourage new blooms, only left a few standing so i expect them to be gorgeous again in a couple weeks. I even bought 2 more this spring when Lowes was having a 2/$10 perrenial sale and put them in planters on my front porch, and even in containers they are blooming their heads off. We have bunnies too, and they don't seem to bother the scabiosa. I do spray my coneflowers though because we have deer too. I use invisible fence deer and rabbit. Thanks for watching!

      Scabiosa = Just starting YESTERDAY I was thinking to have this plant, too when I stumbled upon it in local nursery (Scabiosa "Fama Deep Blue", so gorgeous). But I read this plant is "short-lived", i.e. 2-3 years. That gave me a pause whether it is worth to have it ... ☹

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  Год назад

      There's always a risk when having plants in containers. Typically things that are at least 2 zones hardier than your zone is the criteria for things that are more likely to survive in containers. The traditional echinacea purpurea may be hardier than some of the newer varieties, and it may work in a container.

I dont know if it's due to humidity or what, but mine always end up with black spot, yellow leaves, and just barely survive but dint actually thrive in my garden. One suggestion would be if you do purchase DA Rose's, I would order directly from their site. They have a 5 year warranty for replacement if your DA rose you order from them end up dying. I've used this warranty a couple times. You dont get this warranty if you purchase your DA Rose's at most nurseries. Just something to be aware of/ask about.

    One of my favorite long blooming perennials is salvia guaranitica. Especially the cultivar Black and Blue. Hummingbirds go nuts over it. I like and grow several of the perennial Salvia species. Salvia gregii is another good one. S.uliginosa is a good one also, but the bees love it so much they tend to knock the flowers off. Hi there! Thank you for subscribing. Welcome! We do have irrigation. However, we don't use it regularly as we're in a drought and worry about it drying out our well. Most things are established. So I have watered those things very little this year. Other times I drag the hose around and give things that need water a deep soak. Like hydrangeas or any newly planted plant/tree/shrub. Then I pray for rain!

    Hey Steph, I live in NC zone 7. You have such a beautiful garden that inspired me to go out today to look for some of the flowers. I was only able to find two coneflowers, the white swan and the puerperia. I did find a a beautiful black eyed Susan that’s full of blooms.

    Wow very beautiful garden, thank you for sharing your top choices of long blooming perennials. I live in Toronto, Canada which is zone 5 and I have a few Geranium Rozanne plants in my garden. They bloom from Spring to end of Fall. The flowers start to disappear sometime in November. They are absolutely a must in any garden.

      @@HookedandRooted Hi Steph, thank you so much for reading and replying to my comment. I highly recommend this perennial. It adds a bit of whimsy to the garden and is a pollinator magnet. The flowers are sterile and won't go to seed ever, that's why they are long lasting, plus one plant spreads and covers about 2-3 sq. foot area. You're gonna love this plant and the bees will love you for it. Good luck and keep up the excellent work.

    My daisies I got from big box last year didn’t have a second bloom. Does this mean they’re not happy in the spot they’re in? I do see some green growth popping up in zone 7b as spring approaches so I think it’s still alive?

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  Год назад

      Hi there, Once daisies have their first big flush, they don't bloom as prolifically the second time. You will get sporadic re blooming. However, there are also other types of daisies such as the montauk that bloom later in the season, that you could also incorporate into the garden to extend the daisy show.

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  2 года назад

      Hi Marina! Thank you so much! As for the Yarrow, I had trouble with the first ones I planted dying a few years ago. In my case I believe the issue was root crown rot. I had them in a bed that is always water logged in spring and winter. I have since learned to plant them higher and amend the soil with some gypsum in that area to help drain water better around that plant. Now Yarrow is doing well for me. Sometimes takes a little trial ans error. It's generally an easy perrenial in the right planting location/soil. Hope this helps.
