  • Dominic believes in raising children who are confident, because they will most likely prevail and it is crucial nowadays for them during this internet era.
Everybody want their children to stand out. But this is not so easy. It is really difficult to be the best at math in the class. And equally difficult to be the fastest runner. But as Dominic explained to all his boys… it is really easy to be the most polite. So simple. Hardly effort required at all. Say hello and goodbye. Please and thank you. Look people in the eye and if you know their name, use it.
    This will mark you out.
And if you have confidence and you back yourself… even moderate exams grades will be no obstacle to your success.
Dominic Holland has been a stand-up comedian for thirty years. Author of five novels and one non-fiction book, he has written four series for BBC radio, made many TV appearances and has written for most national newspapers. He is married to Nikki. They have four sons and a dog. They live in London, in a house which is rarely tidy. Dominic has been a stand-up comedian for thirty years. "The most successful people in showbusiness are often not the most talented, they are the most confident" - Dominic Holland

I was always wondering how Tom Holland was so incredibly confident. Great and wise parents. Good job mum and dad!💐

I needed this. My parents have always pressured me into being the best. I have always been pressured to get good grades because of weekly grade checks and what I should do as a career. I have always wanted to be a journalist, but now I am stuck with one semester left in college with a business degree. I feel like I need to hide my books I have written because my parents never really see being a journalist or writer as a career. It sucks because I will probably end up with an office job I hate...what can you do I guess...wish I had more of a true support system rather than people who care about my future income.

Do what your heart tells you. If you want to be a journalist, be a journalist. I'm at the age where there was so much I wanted to do and circumstances beyond my control just really didn't help. And yes I do have regret. Please don't write yourself off but make sure you've got something solid to fall back on just in case.

Honestly, I don’t know, but would imagine that a business degree will probably help with journalism. A lot of journalists are freelance and have to manage themselves!

3 years after this comment, I hope you figured out that what you studied is by no means a limitation to what you want to do in life. If you really want to be something really bad, you can make it happen. I was a 33-year-old engineer when I volunteered to make an after-movie for this TEDx event, 3.5 years ago. 6 months later, a large broadcast channel found the video and offered me a video editor job. Right now I work as a producer in that same channel.

Amazing! So true! Thank you! As a teacher, I know I can’t do it alone! I make sure I’m nurturing the child along with working on their academics! But most importantly teaching them to be good people and it’s shows in how they treat others!!

So much truth! My youngest is pretty quiet and unassuming, and I’ve always had the fear that he wouldn’t get ahead because he was content with himself. He took a low-level part-time job while in college that pushed him in front of a lot of people from all walks of life. His consistent adherence to the purpose of the job, and good manners with all kinds of people led to his being known throughout the organization. He has been told from VP’s down, that should he come back to work there once his education is complete, they will be so happy to have him!

Love this! It really is amazing how even the best of people get overlooked early on only to be super successful and at the top of their game later in life. Well said!!!

This is so good! Children are the future so learn them to be confident, polite and nice. My parents raised me like that too! It doesn’t matter if I and up being a CEO of a big company or en up at the supermarket (wich is fine too it is my after school job after al) they just want me to be happy and have a good time. Pushing your kids isn’t good because they will most likely end up being unhappy or scared to say that they don’t want to do that. Children are their own being and not an extension of you as a parent. They have their own toughts, feelings and ambitions. The only thing you have to do as a parent is support them, guide them, raise them to be polite and most importantly be happy for them no matter what they end up doing!

Beautiful talk. I will be showing it to my boys to help mitigate the damage the schooling system does to their unique selves. Being the young ones in an academic year is not an easy task to manage. Wealth and material gain are disastrous yardsticks of happiness.

As a teaching assistant, this is so true, trying to explain this to parents, is difficult. I try to tell all the children i work with, that they are special, its not all academic.

I appreciate Dominic Holland 's personal views. But the kids who were best at sports, at my school, were not the best in exams. I saw no link at all.

Yip teachers are expected to do way too much parenting..its bizarre - parents should instil manners, good behaviour etc
