      8.34 is a conversion factor. It comes from the following : M(lb/day) = Q(MGD)*C (mg/L) * 8.34 - lb-L/MG. Please note that the 8.34 factor is to obtain the amount per day having the flowrate in million gallons per day (MGD) and the concentration in milligrams per liter (mg/L). I hope it helps.
