They were 20 miles from the airport and dumping fuel,,gee weez,,the pilot was terrified because the captain never returned and the planes was inverting

I knew two people on this flight, very close friends’ parents. I wont ever forget waking up to the news. These pilots were heroes and did everything they could to try and save a doomed plane.

What I've learned from this channel is that between pilot errors a and mechanical issues, it's AMAZING that so many planes fly every day without incident. It takes very little for everything to go sideways.

If I'm driving one day and jet fuel lands on my car I'm gonna be praying to the Lord Immediately not cuz if someone happens to throw a cig butt in my direction well that too... But cuz a plane is prolly trying to lighten the load to safetyyyy

@@dannyr333 The fuel disperses over a wide enough area that the particles evaporate into a fine mist and most of it goes into the sea. Plane fuel isn’t like fuel you put into your car.
thinking of the first officer seeing the captain pass out, knowing your all on your own, the heat, and still trying to fly even though u cant see anything... its disturbing trying to imagine the panic and fear he must have felt.

I was part of the Canadian Coast Guard SAR team that was deployed after the crash. It was a life-altering experience for everyone involved in the search/recovery operation. I think about Swiss Air Flight 111 and the 229 people-who lost their lives in an instant-every day. RIP.

Do you have to recover every body for burial purposes and do they check dental records for everyone to identify the bodies? I understand if it’s too difficult to respond to and don’t mean any disrespect!!!
It takes a lot to save lives. But it takes even a lot more to rescue lifeless bodies who once had a life and hopes like all of us. Thank you for your service.

Im amazed at how the first officer managed to remain conscious and competent for so long, huge respect and he also seemed very nice and friendly, could imagine him being a quirky dad or something

I'll always remember the one where one of the pilots told his mother he loved her before the plane hit the ground. It was a residential area and the streets became like something out of a horror movie, with bodies and body parts everywhere; on the street, in trees, on roofs, even in people's houses.

I visited the memorial near the site in 2005. It was a warm day in July, and the parking area was full. People were quietly and reverently paying their respects. There was a large split stone with all of the names carved into it. It was the most eerie feeling I've ever felt. May they rest in peace.

I go there whenever I go to Peggy’s Cove. Very eerie indeed each time. So quiet with the waves, but then remember hell was breaking our there on the horizon years ago.
Man, that captain was something else. He was as calm as ever under those hellish conditions. Mad respect to him for that. He had to know it was a wrap too. They would have never made it after the dump off. He even tried to respond again, but seemed to lose connection or pass out. They say it was so hot in the cockpit that the ceiling had melted. RIP to all those who passed that day and condolences to the families/friends.

this may or may not sink in. EVERY time something like this happens - the aviation industry learns how to prevent it from happening again.
technology is developed, procedures revised etc that prevent repeated incidents.
we don't just put our hands in our pockets and shrug our shoulders.
so - if there is any redemption - not one of these people has been lost without preventing the same thing from happening to millions of other people.

Thank you for making this video. I was part of the military contingent for the crash recovery effort at the beginning, which from my standpoint was only a couple of days. This crash has kept me awake for years, and it wasn't until recently that I decided to get help. I'll never forget that moment in my life, and my only hope going forward is that the families of all those who lost their lives have some semblance of peace.

That is a very standard procedure , along with amount of fuel, If you declare a pan pan pan, emergency services are notified, they have to know how many people to find, and how much fuel ( potential fire they are dealing with)

I saw the documentary on this crash, and the aftermath was pretty grisly. Over 15,000 body parts and many of the first responders and forensic experts were so traumatized they developed PTSD. Awful situation for everyone involved.
Myself and my wife were in the same departure hall as 111 for hours waiting for a flight to Vancouver on Cathy Pacific, having been diverted through Shannon to JFK on an Aer Lingus flight from Dublin because Air Canada had gone on strike that morning.
Over the course of hours sitting around we spoke to many of the Swiss Air passengers and had a laugh chats etc, eventually our flight gates opened and we all dispersed onto our planes with the Swiss Air passengers getting on the plane a couple of minutes before us, as we were taxiing up to the runway and queuing to take off I saw the Swiss Air flight take off into the night sky thinking oh! That's all the people we were talking to earlier heading back to Europe, and as an engineer I said to my wife that's the same type of plane that we flew on from Shannon an MD11, v good planes I thought to myself.
We arrived in Vancouver late at night and got into our hotel turned on the TV and the news of the crashed flight near St John's was on the news and my wife said that the flight no was the same as the one that left the departure gate in JFK earlier.
We were in shock when we realised all were lost, over the next few days/weeks we saw photos of the passengers on the various news outlets and realised we spoke to that person or sat beside another.
It was chilling.
2 weeks later we had to repeat the journey to get home to Ireland as Air Canada was still on strike, it was not an easy trip for either of us, but we still think of their loss and of the poor families and friends involved.
Your story is so poignant. It's amazing how many lives we can affect, right down to a friendly stranger we simply chatted with before boarding our flight. I guess we matter much more than we realize. Thank you for your kindness.

Really tragic. Thank you for sharing your story. It reminds me of, back in 1988. I believe it was, me, and my dad were at the Pan Am terminal at JFK the day after Pan Am flight 103 had been bombed. That terminal was like a tomb.
Only time I had been to jfk was the summer of 2022 for my dad and stepmoms wedding in Connecticut. Tho no planes crashed before or after the time I was there. All I remember was seeing airlines I had never seen before such as Kenya airways, royal air maroc, and air India.
Although i know the outcome i always somehow hope they will save the plane.

A young woman was driving across a bridge. Suddenly her car drifted into the guardrail and ground and scraped to a halt.
Motorists who stopped found her unconscious and dead or dying.
An autopsy revealed a rifle bullet embedded in her neck, the point in her spinal cord.
A man read the story in the newspaper. He realized that at the time of the incident he was shooting cans floating in the river. He took his rifle to the police for them to match the fatal bullet to his gun. Perfect match. The bullet was undamaged as when it struck the woman it had lost most of its velocity.
The district attorney's office worked out an appropriate penalty for negligent manslaughter, taking into consideration his completely voluntary act of turning himself in. The man pled guilty and took the penalty.
This is from decades ago by my memory, so the exact sequence may be incorrect.

I was impressed with the way the flight crew and air traffic control tried to help each other through this difficult ordeal. These are complex situations that require you to be able to manage emotions and decision making in real time entrusted with lives that hang in the balance when something goes wrong. Both crew and those on the ground did their best. RIP
I'm watching this with a lump in my throat...those pilots sounded like nice people...there were hidden panic in their voices...this is very, very sad...my condolences to all friends and families of the victims...may they rest in peace...

He was alone in the cockpit and with everything failing he probably already knew they were done, but still managed to stay calm until the end at least that's what it looks like from the recording.

I had left the Canadian Navy the year before this accident. Quite a few of my friends were on board ships that went out to look for survivors and recover debris. I can't imagine what they saw
Reservists were called on also. Can't say I want to do human recovery.

I remember this crash well. I worked for a big pharma company at the time, and one of our lower level executives was on that flight. I did not know him, but one of the guys working for me had just done work on a printer for him in his office, and they had talked a bit. He was pretty torn up over it. A very nice woman who was one of the public affairs people knew him very well, and she was very distraught over his death for quite some time. Sad situation all around, and also for the rescue people, who so desperately hoped to find some folks alive, and never did.
Yes, many of those rescue people, many of them ordinary fishermen living around the bay, rushed out to help. They found body parts, children's dolls, clothing. Some suffer from PTSD as a result to this day.

I grew up near Peggy's Cove and know several people who helped looked for survivors and when there were none, search for remains. My parents lived nearby and heard the thump as the plane hit the water. I'm very proud of our city and the local people who took victims' families into their homes and did every they could for them. Peggy's Cove is beautiful but is tinged with sadness forever imo.
I’m also from the area and my grand parents house shook as the plane flew over head and fuel poured all over it no one will forget

I flew Swissair when I lived in Zurich. It’s so sad to hear the voices of the Swiss pilot with an obvious Swiss accent: makes this one very personal. And I remember the shock of Swissair going bankrupt also.

I made the mistake of looking up more details and one stuck out to me. "Only one body was identifiable by sight."
This has always been the one that got me. In the dark, in the middle of the ocean, alone, probably freezing with the only source of heat and light being the fire surrounding you.
Thank you for this. My husband & I lost 2 close friends in this disaster. They left 3 young children. It was the first time they ever left their kids to go anywhere. Two other people we knew were with them. Every time I drive or walk past their house I relive that day & those poor children

My neighbor's grandson, Monte Wilkins, was on his way to a college semester in Europe. G-pa, 88, was told about it, he died 4 months later. Monte was the joy of everybody's heart, to know him was to love him. This kind of pain never goes away. God's peace be with you. Good thing the plane diverted to dump fuel, it would not have made a safe landing anyway and with 230 tons of fuel on board a land crash would have been even worse.
How on earth would crashing on land be even worse? Everyone died either from the smoke or the impact of the crash. At least it'd be made easier to salvage the plane and collect the dead if they crashed on land.
I never understood why the pilots never said there was smoke and ask where to go safely for an emergency landing. We have lakes, rivers and even fields for them to land on which might have been hard but not impossible and could have saved some lives.
unlike other crashes, this pilot was calm and did not rage or show signs of weakness until the very end. R.I.P to all passengers.
My late father, a senior L1011 captain for Eastern, said that an inflight fire is always the worst of all scenarios.

James Youngblood Worse, over what was supposed to be an innovative entertainment system but was really a badly designed, badly installed, wildly overpriced money-making scheme that was obsolete by the time it was installed.
It might have overheated and started the fire, but the metalized mylar used for insulation caused it to spread.
The passengers certainly weren't bored on this flight.
The MD-11 is one of the safest aircraft in the world and has become a tanker, airliner, and cargo transporter.
The IFE was probably designed by Swiss air and was requested as a custom installment into the aircraft

Remember watching a documentary about this disaster and one bit I found especially emotional was the guy who moved to right near where the plane crashed so he could be closer to his daughter who was killed in this horrible incident. Ian Shaw I think he was called.

He owns a restaurant called Shaw's landing. I have eaten at it a few times, it's really good, though I haven't visited it since covid but it's still open, I'll have to go back soon.

Fire and smoke in cockpit.

ATC: "Okay just a couple miles I'll get back with you."
ATC: "Okay you are clear to start your fuel dump."
ATC: "Let me know when you are finished with your fuel dump."
Swiss Air: "...static..."
I guess the ATC didn't hear or understand what *immediately* meant.
They should have a new rule. If a plane is on fire, especially anywhere in the fuselage, even a whiff of smoke anywhere, land immediately. Don't try to figure out if there really is a fire, or it's origin, just land, then maintenance can check. Put on the air brakes and descend 5000 feet a minute, or whatever is safe and fast, dump the fuel as you descend, on Farmer Joe's cows if you have to. None of the diverting over the ocean, no I like that airport better, just land. By the time you are certain there is a fire, it is to late.
This is the flight that changed what ‘immediately’ meant. It is not proven that the plane could have landed at the airport safely but even unsafely would be better than what happened. Both of my grandparents were on that flight. If there’s one good thing that came from this it’s that when anything is even slightly off planes will land immediately immediately and deal with whatever they need to so that nothing potentially preventable like this happens again

The pilot was fixated with sticking to Swissair company policy, which required them to carry out a 20 minute long checklist for dealing with smoke in the cockpit
I have followed this disaster since the night it occurred, as I was living nearby. I still ask those very same questions, from the get go, once he declared a full emergency, forget the fuel dump, and it would appear ( from one of the books on the subject, Swissair Down) the Capt can do whatever he needs to do to get that plane on the ground. I think he knew that which, is why, after the ATC repeats the fuel dump thing, he says again he is declaring an emergency. ATC is funny, the pilot has to say everything, not the ATC job? the author of Swissair Down questioned it estensively, a pilot himself, the only thing that justifies it all, is the Transportation Safety Board never said a thing about the ATC actions. Well, all they said was it was satisfactory, in their report. Tragic affair to be sure. Thing is also, even if they had gone straight in, dumped, (remember when the pilot asked ATC if they could do "That" during desent? and the ATC didn't answer him?..I don't know about this whole mess) they would not have made it, he was too high, so they had to deviate somehow, and the damage that they were sustaining by the time they crashed, would also have taken place. The author of SwissAir down says, in the best of conditions'no damage, everything goes perfect they would possibly just make it. Conditions were messy, it was a miserable rainy windy night, especially out where they were. By the time they reported their first pan pan pan, damage had already occurred. Ground sensor system for the wheel brakes, slats stuck in trailing position.

I watched the breaking news when this happened and was glued to my tv for hours that night. It was heartbreaking.
I always feel deep sadness for the air traffic controllers who must feel so powerless.
The ATC from Halifax didn't grasp the full extent of what had happened. Kept referring to dumping the fuel when your ready but as we know it was too late.
I don't think the ATC in this case knew how bad the situation was. The captain was very calm at all times and insisted on dumping fuel which meant it would take them much longer to land. Also at no point did he appear to mention that there were flames or that he was fighting fire. I doubt the ATC people knew anything was badly wrong until it disappeared from radar and quit responding.
I live about 3 hours from the crash site and remember this night very well. Residents living along the coast reported hearing a loud boom as the plane struck the ocean. Rescue personnel were devastated when told it would be recovery only.
I’m from saint margets bay so I can give additional details my grand parents house was directly under the path of the plane aswell as east ain’t margrets school both were coated in jet fuel from the fuel dumping also iirc windows were shattered due to the noise it rumbled and shook houses as it flew overhead it’s still a touchy subject in the community
This is one of the few air accidents where it seems the crew did everything right for as long as they could. It is amazing how few options aircraft had (have?) to suppress fires.

I... have been watching these videos *shudders* for a good 4-5mo. Watching about 5-6videos per night.. EVERY NIGHT.
Now.. I have been documented.. by a FEW PSYCHS as crazy.. AND EVEN I.. WOULD NOT be watching THESE before ANY flight. SHIT, when I got married 10+yrs ago.. I was so panicked I started pacing out front of the wedding area. Just back n forth, back n forth. Could not say a damn thing. I said, "I do". That was IT.
NOW... I can take a severe amount of stress. Ive gone into panic when the stress is too much. But.. watching these.. before a flight. NO.

Dangit. This flight, the pilots were experiencing a real nightmare. Smoke, fire, autopilot disengaged, captain incapacitated, vital instruments failed in total darkness. The copilot had no chance. Truly felt for him there 😭
I said this comment a lot but at 14:45, the first officer says “Hello?” Put it in .50 and you will hear for yourself.
This was beautifully done as is all your videos. Your choice in music and the way you present these crashes really makes you feel like you were there. It's also a great way to help us understand what the poor souls went through.
I'm sorry, but if there is smoke in the cockpit and we're within 25 miles of an airport, that plane needs to be on the ground ASAP. I'll take my chances with a heavy plane on landing.
Dumping fuel seemingly proved being a fatal choice. Just wondering if was it the captain's will or was it a forced choice in case of early emergency landing with a heavy aircraft ?

I would've dumped fuel regardless of where I was at.
Well, CME4Sheepdogs, dumping fuel, if the airplane is too heavy, is necessary, because otherwise it could explode on impact during the landing! Especially if it´s on fire anyway! So he really didn´t have that much of a choice! And dumping fuel on land, especially houses, is NOT a good idea! His options were excruciatingly limited...but I believe he had no clue of how dire his situation REALLY was. AND you also remember that he didn´t see that he was so close to the surface of the water, because of the smoke in the cockpit.
Having been to the memorial; it’s a surrealistic experience.
An incredible sadness that still permeates the area.
I actually have a 1/200 version of this aircraft and every now and then I would look at the model and have a flashback to the day my dad was on that fateful flight. I was just seven years old and it was heart wrenching to hear that my beloved father was on that fateful flight. May god be with them.

Seats with in-flight entertainment systems are still fairly impressive today, let alone in 1998. That's incredible. I'm not surprised a severe technical issue resulted, though it shouldn't have happened. Who doesn't know tech devices need cooling.

The pilot remained so calm and collected even though he likely knew everyone onboard was about to die. A true hero.
Wasn’t aware of this one, makes me appreciate how safer planes get after every major plane accident.
Swiss Air 111 has to be one of the saddest ; just as the Valuejet onboard fire from oxygen canisters was. I can’t imagine being trapped in a plane at 30,000 feet and on fire.
I have listened to their original radio transmissions to ATC and was very sad to hear their voices filled with hope first and later with despair.
Very sad that these voices are never heard again.

I'm originally from Nova Scotia, I have a sister who still lives there, outside Halifax. She's married to a now-retired RCMP officer. At that time he was present at the location where the debris was being collected. Just to give you an idea of the kind of force the plane hit the ocean, items recovered - not bodies, but fragments of bodies. A personal item like, say pocket change, like a penny - folded in half. At least the collision was instant, lights out. If I'm going to go down and die in a plane, this is how I'd want to go. I've watched docs on other plane crashes and some of them look like they would have been truly horrifying.

I was a Navigator on an MC-130P flying from Okinawa, Japan to Indonesia in 2014, and our nav station started to smoke. We immediately turned everything off, went of full-face O2 masks, ran the checklists, and diverted to Brunai for a safe landing. After seeing this video, it's amazing how different things could have turned out for us. This crew was dealt a bad hand. A toast...
We had smoke in the cockpit before and had to run the checklist pilot made sure to declare immediately and descend to 10k. we were all on 02 and i depressurized the airplane asap fires and smoke kill reactions have to be immediate and deliberate..... This crew really tried but simply ran out of time.......
I have seen several recreations of this tragedy but never with smoke included in the cockpit view. Truly chilling. Rest in peace all who were lost.
This one really shows how ATC personnel work to help those in the air, and how they must feel when this is the outcome.

It was on the news when this happened in the airport someone was late checking was closed man begged steward to take him on plane but steward said no after crash he said that steward saved his life not to taking him on plane

Not that surprising. The pilot was Swiss German, not sure you know this but Germans are sticklers for rules and following them. He should have taken a chance and just landed the plane, period!

Well, he decided to dump fuel since overweight landings brings some risk with it. Also the severity of the fire was discovered late at which they decided they need to land immediatly. The pilots acted right in this case!
That applies if you're below your maximum landing weight. In this case, they were over it, and the only way they would be able to lose weight fast enough was to dump fuel. and everybody in the aviation industry knows landing over the maximum landing weight carries the risk of breakup on landing, because the landing gear can only withstand so much till it shears off, which could be catastrophic, as the load of jet fuel can ignite, causing a blazing inferno that might have taken a lot more lives.
An interesting side story. There was a woman who was "bumped" off Flight 111 and as a result lived. Some years later she was featured on a program about a group of tourist kidnapped from a resort in Africa. The hostages were divided into two groups and separated. One group was released unharmed, the other murdered to the last. The woman bumped from Flt. 111 was in the survivors group.
How lucky was she?

The thing I can never understand is this: A pilot detects smoke in the cabin and requests to land but does not declare emergency; he waits until the situation becomes critical.
I don't get it either. If I was a pilot and smelled smoke, it'd try to land the plane immediately at all costs.
yes the pilot made a fatal judgement call to not land immediately and instead circling around dumping fuel.

The plane would have crashed anyways according to investigations but the thing that made a huge difference was the captain turning the air off which made the smoke worse. Otherwise the plane may have landed safely.
For every problem there's a checklist to be done. One thing is to see smoke, another is to see fire... Plus, can you imagine landing a plane with a huge load of fuel, far heavier than its maximum weight to land? That would be a huge problem. By the way, it is on the video, though, that the flight was doomed either way, it wouldn't make it to any airport. This is so sad.
The way the captain spoke, so smoothly, calmly etc. Once I had smelled the smoke I would be screaming at Roger the air controller, crying for help like seriously. But instead the captain seemed to take it easy and tried to stay relaxed while speaking to the air controller. Wow looks like the dude had a PHD in staying calm during moment of distress. RIP

Thank you! I did NOT remember this accident and I also did NOT realize that Swiss Air had gone bankrupt. I thought Swiss Air merged with another airline. With regards to the fire in the entertainment wiring / equipment, the increasing use of lithium-ion batteries in more devices in passenger carry-on and checked luggage has me worried that something similar will happen again.
Li-ion/Li-polymer and Lithium nonrechargeable batteries are permitted only within devices. Loose batteries or packs of batteries are prohibited in passenger aircraft.
I was on that exact airplane the day before flying from Switzerland to JFK. I even have audio of me talking on that plane. Surreal.
So sad. I know 5 persons of a same family , 3 children and their parents who died.

Even though Swissair is sadly gone, its successor Swiss International is going strong - Swiss International kept most of the design choices of its predecessor, and also inherited the company's MD-11s and operated them for quite a few years before selling them to Fed Ex.
There is only ,,small" difference between the two - Swiss Int. belongs to Lufthansa.
