Just saw this video and realised we were on that cruise ship! Now we keep watching the video trying to see if we are in there. Wouldn't believe we were saying all around Scotland it would be great to see you!!! Now totally disappointed that we were sooooo close!
Loving your recent videos ..I watch them with my father who is elderly and housebound..He loves the feeling that the videos give of being out and travelling..Thank you from both of us..
I was there last year and omg, it's insane. Not just the town, but all over the island all the mini buses suddenly arrive and every interesting place is flooded with people. Also, fun fact, I ate chips that day exactly where you're eating your roll.
St Magnus’ is a strong contender for being one of the finest cathedrals in the UK tbh - it’s that beautiful red sandstone that does it, plus uniqueness of its Viking heritage. You’re spoiling us a bit with all these bonus videos though Steve, it’s not even Christmas yet!
That Mayday call was exciting, I was called out to it as a member of the Westray Fire crew, the Westray Coastguard team were called out too. By the time we got to the airfield the plane had landed safely. Thankfully.
Thank you very much Steve. I am a newly handicapped 60 yoea old woman. I used to do my own trips when I was younger and fitter. It is a pleasure to teavel with you on your RUclips chanel. I dont have a body that cope and nore the money, its expensive to be handicapped. So go on, I will follow you till you have been everywhere. Lots of love from Åsa in Sweden
All good wishes to you, Asa. Those of us who are up in years get so much enjoyment out of Steve's travel vlogs. He has a great talent in capturing the atmosphere of the places he visits.
I spent two weeks in Kirkwall in 2022. Lovely place and the best people in the World. I suppose its part of living on an island in the North sea, if you don't look after each other then you'd all be skrewed. But that kindness and willingness to help is also extended to visitors. Genuinely lovely people.
My husband and I were in Kirkwall in May of 2024. We were wandering around on a Sunday and it was quiet. Two days later a cruise ship was in. It was absolute chaos! What a beautiful place though. Planning on going back.
Probably the best town in the world! Ok, I was born there many years ago, so some might say I'm biased, but I've never let the opinions of others cloud my judgement! You've portrayed it well in this vid, looking forward to the next part.
The reflections in the perfectly still water were fabulous. I realized that when we were in Orkney in June, we didn't really spend enough time in Kirkwall itself!
When leaving tavern,s men were 'pressed' into service courtesy of the Bosun's Cudgel, the next morning they would wake onboard a ship supposedly having 'volunteered' with a large lump on their head. At the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 over half of the Royal Navy's 120,000men present had been 'pressed' into service.
Hi Steve. My husband (also a Steve) and I are Americans who love watching your videos. I did want to comment on something you said in this one about port towns loving the positive effect on their economy when cruise ships come into town... As very frequent cruisers for a very long time (35 years now) and all over the world, I can tell you that there is actually a substantial (and growing) anti-cruise movement happening not only in well-publicized places like Venice and Svalbard (both of those for environmental reasons), but also in places like Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, the Canary Islands, Valencia, Amsterdam, Dubrovnik, Bruges, Iceland and throughout Norway (for both environmental and quality of life reasons), as well as Key West, Bar Harbor, and throughout Alaska in the US. There are so many large ships nowadays, that when there are multiple ones are simultaneously docked in a port, the cruise passengers completely overwhelm the port cities without adding add as much to the local economy as one would think. That's because, as solely day-trippers, there are no hotel stays, often no restaurant meals consumed other than quick bites or coffee in a café, no theater or sports tickets purchased, etc. It's sad, but as someone who lives myself in a tourist area (Southeast Florida not far from Fort Lauderdale), I do fully understand it.
Oh my heavens, the sunrise near St. Magnus - absolutely magical! 😍 Kirkwall was a delight, love the small back streets and the sturdy homes. Thanks again for bringing this to us! ❤
Thank you for this wonderful and calming video! So much going on here in the US, from which this took me away. The cathedral was stunningly beautiful! A place needing to be seen in person, for sure. I’ve been watching your videos for months (and caught up on years ago videos, too!), but just now I set up being able to comment. Again, thank you! I hope you know how much I appreciate you and the content given so kindly to us. I’m already looking forward to the next video. 😊 Enjoy your day!
Congratulations on 200k. Trip to Orkney this summer seems forever ago. lol. People were so nice shocked to see an American in a camper van. Thanks for the video
Thomas Telford - a little plug for the closest town to my home town of Shrewsbury!! I know you love your history and historical towns, Steve, so you’ll have to visit us in Shrewsbury! A beautiful town full of everything!! 😍🩵
I remember Argo's bakery and also the Highland Park shop opposite. Ended up spending a few quid in there 😄 Great memories from a few years back! Congrats on 200k too 😁👍
So lovely to see this video Steve. I was lucky enough to pass through Kirkwall on 4 Sept on my way to Tingwall to catch the ferry to Rousay where I stayed for nearly 3 weeks to visit a friend. I loved mooching around the town & visited the amazing cathedral. Brief visits back to the mainland from Rousay before travelling back to England on 23 Sept included Stromness, Birsay and Skaill - also nipped over to Egilsay. I'd love to go back and spend more time on the mainland & visit the other islands. If you've ever been (or plan to get to Rousay), check out the amazing 'Betty's Reading Room' just around the corner from the car park at Tingwall Ferry - it's a little single storey farm building converted in memory of Betty, who I think was a schoolteacher - always open and full of books to read, borrow, swap, take - such a wonderful idea and a space to hide away whilst waiting for your ferry. A local told me about it and even my friend didn't know it was there - thank you Ted ❤
Awwww Steve, yet again, another brilliant video, well edited, sound was great, ive been there before, yes, on a round the UK cruise, one of the best cruises I've done! Only disappointment was, you didn't go back to the bakery for your Cinnamon bun! 😂 thanks, 👌
Three videos in 5 days YES thanks Steve looks like Christmas has come early 👍 and as a fellow Scotsman that breakfast roll looked absolutely delicious especially with the cheeky tattie scone in a proper roll 😋
Great to see old Orkney again Steve, not been back since before the Covid, but really miss the place. I used to go every year from 1996. You passed by my old pal William Shearer`s the best store in Orkney, they sell just about anything in there and have a great Christmas shop set-up upstairs. Looking forward to watching more videos to see if there`s anything new up there.
Oooh, I've been on the Regal Princess. About three years ago. My favourite cruise I've done. Really nice people, nice atmosphere on bord, great food, lots of fun and games. Would definitely recommend Princess if you ever decide to do a cruise.
I just can't keep up. One minute Reykjavik the next Orkney. I'm checking to see if all my Christmases are arriving this week because I'm getting several videos from you. Legend.
It amazingly beautiful still intact all the building full of Scotland culture very relaxing I love this kind of places cleaning atmosphere is good and weather I love. I wish I am here one day. ❤
Orkney is on my list. So beautiful, and so much history (just like the rest of Scotland!). Did you manage to catch a glimpse in the cathedral of the plaque marking where St. Magnus's remains are located? If I recall correctly, they were hidden inside a hollow pillar for safekeeping back during the Referendum but were found back in 1919 during work. That makes it the only church in Scotland that still has the bones of its original saint.
I absolutely LOVE your vlogs! Just the fact that you travel around cold areas of the world demands respect. Excellent filming and editing. Love it. Cheers from Denmark.
In August of 2022 we were on a cruise ship that visited Kirkwall. Unfortunately we spent the entire day touring various sites around the island and very little time in the town. Looks like we need to go back and spend a bit of time wandering around the town.😊

I didn't get to see much of Kirkwall on my cruise, because we jumped on a bus to go see Scara Brae. I came on Regal Princess in August of last year. It was a great cruise! The weather was really nice too.
We had a week on Orkney (Stromness) earlier this year, and had a great time. Although we didn’t go for pub lunches etc, we did try a couple of evenings, but the places we tried were always fully booked with cruise liner passengers.
