You know how us Aussie love a chat, just like the Scots :) Anyway it turned out they were from Montrose, and whilst they don't know you personally, they too love your channel. You sir, are bringing people together across the world :)
Hey mate glad you enjoyed my challenge, I certainly enjoyed watching it and so did everyone else by the looks of it! I'm in Montreux next week by chance.... And my invoice for 10% revenue is in the post 😂
Thanks again mate for such a great video idea! And like I said, you landed me in one of the most beautiful places I've ever been, you're worth your cut, but I'll change my address :D Have a great time there! Next week will be the Rochers-de-Naye cog railway (and then a wee video on Montreux itself midweek after) Cheers!
@@steve-marsh already looking forward to that video of the cog railway, Steve; thanks for this one, yet another fan-daby-dozey video 👍👍 (edge of the seat stuff; I actually cheered loudly (much to the consternation of Herself) when you stepped off the train at Montreux within the 24 hour target); great to see you fulfil your ambition to ride a dooobel-dekkah at last, btw.

Back in 2012 I did something similar. I’d always wanted to travel from my home in Dundee to my friends in Marseilles entirely by rail so ….. Train Dundee tonEdinburgh then sleeper Edinburgh to London Euston; walk to Kings Cross/St Pancreas to catch Eurostar then Gare du Nord. I took an internal Paris train to the Gare de Lyons, from where I took a TGV straight to Marseilles. There, my friend met me at the station. Total time about 18 hours station to station. The journey was done when sleeper trains were reasonably priced - relatively.
I don't know about recognising Paris so easily but when you showed the first station in Switzerland I could tell that from the architecture. Travelling around Europe last year you could virtually always tell which country you were in by the buildings. I found Swiss railways to be excellent at least the local trains in the Interlaken area. They were on time and when you reached the station the connecting train was waiting at the platform. The trains were modern, clean and comfortable, I did buy a rail pass which covered the trains, mountain railways, cable cars and lake steamers.
I read some stat that 96% (or thereabouts, a lot anyway) of all late trains in Switzerland, the lateness is caused by trains that are arriving from other countries. So basically, Swiss trains, in Switzerland, never late. And from my experience, that’s true. Great video Steve, thank you.
Yes - I remember arriving at Berne Station for a train to Interlaken and being met by a staff member apologising for it's late running and suggesting the concourse shops or cafes to pass the time.....despite it only being 15 minutes behind schedule! I remarked how I thought it unusual for a train to run late in Switzerland - his answer "Ah, that's because it's come from Germany!"
I take the same Route for almost 20 Years now to go to Work (1 Hour each direction with 1 Trainswitch at "Zürich Altstetten" ) and my Train was late 5 times in these 20 Years, so i do not have anything to complain ^^
To link your last 2 videos I was doing work experience in Sheffield in the late 80s & they were doing an office competition to forecast the winners of the English and Scottish leagues for the upcoming season. Some people who didn't follow football were struggling a bit and the man organising it asked one woman why she'd gone for Montrose in the Scottish 2nd division and she said because she liked their music festival.
Epic video Steve, had me right from the start, your video editing and commentary hits a chord with all of us who watch your videos presumably, very well done :)

With seconds to spare, great work, mate! Loved this video. Your heart must have been pounding at the end. And shoutout to @NonstopEurotrip for coming up with the challenge! :) What are you going to give him in return? Also, painful to read your notes at the end and see yet more evidence of Eurostar's insane pricing... the UK is so close to mainland Europe, and yet crossing that gap in a low-emissions way is such a ridiculous financial hurdle :(
Wow , what a challenge ! I am guessing the worst part , other than stressing about train times , finding platforms was the hanging about in London . It would be so much better if Eurostar ran trains through the night , though I’m guessing the local hotels wouldn’t agree . Another great video , thank you .. looking forward to the next one .
Great video! Well done Steve for completing the challenge within 24 hours without stretching the cost too far. It brings back a lot of happy memories of train journeys from Paris to Switzerland and Italy.
Very enjoyable! Thank you for taking us with you! I feel out of breath right now! Looking forward to your showing us around , now that we are here! :0) !
Great video, I really enjoyed seeing this journey alongside a fun concept of doing it within 24hrs. Also, as someone who lives in both Nottingham and London then travels to Edinburgh for work semi-regularly. I felt seen in this video…😆. First, I’ve taken the Lumo to London quite a few times and I knew you’d likely not get any sleep. It’s truly a budget train experience and they’re usually quite noisy/busy. Second, as a very frequent passenger on the train from London to Nottingham - the prices you saw are correct and absurd. Keep up the good work.
You really know how to build the suspense, fella! 😉 I was right there with you, murmuring “Come on, come on!!” 😅 What a fantastic journey, you really took the team on your back for this one. You secured some decent ticket prices there Steve. I guess UK train tickets are generally OK if you book in advance. Buy on the day you get shafted. I live 40 miles from London and pay £37 off peak return to London. You paid that from Edinburgh.
I adore trains, love travelling on as many types of train as possible.... I had a very long train trip in September 23.... Loved it! 33 hours from one river flowing through a capital city and my own capital city river...
Maybe some more of these challenges .Perth UK to Perth Australia? Now. that would be a challenge Steve. I enjoyed your FAQ in today's video. All the best from Australia.
I am travelling from the Netherlands to Switserland by train almost every year. It is TOP. Nice video again, Steve. I guess you could have done this well under 15 hours but than it would have been pretty boring, with fast connections both in London and Paris, with an underground running RER line D in Paris (with which you can get a 20 minutes connection between Paris Nord and Paris Gare de Lyon). But than you also have to book it really in advance because of the prices.... Last minute bookings are so expensive nowadays. As you say in the video: it absolutely is crazy, in Britain even more so as on the continent.
What is it with RUclipsrs and swiss trains. You are the 3rd youtuber I have seen in the last 24 hours that has brought a video out of trains and the swiss countryside. Great video and scenery.
What a fun adventure! I have gone to Gare Du Nord and it was nice to see it again. As a woman, I would not have liked being at the closed train stations in London at those wee hours. The HST’s are very sleek. Thank you for this video!
Steve Marsh - the man in seat 47... or seat 76... or the vestibule... Another great video. The first time we were on a Swiss train it was late. I think it's just a rumour about their efficiency.

It lifts my spirits! Really want to make it to Scotland one day. Wish you could be my tour guide and show me around but I guess you do that with your videos.
Well done Steve, the unusual occurrence of trains being on time!! Eurostar was a 24h service, scaled back now, and closure of the Kent stations. Your comment on the fares shows why the trains are not used so much in England, when I can do a round trip from Kent to Ripon for less than £60 of fuel. Keep up the entertaining videos.
Couldn't wait for you to get to Montreux, know the station and area very well - lived in Montreux for 6 yrs from 1976. It's the place i love the most, absolutely stunning

Well done Steve. In 2002 I did Macclesfield (Cheshire) to Geneva in a little over 14 hours by train, so appreciate the resilience required. The RER between Gare du Nord and Gare de Lyon saves a lot of time, and you can avoid the queues at the ticket machine in Gare du Nord by buying them on the train (at the buffet car). If you can't get them on the train a good tip is to ignore the first ticket machines and go to the second set where the queues are much shorter. The other point for people to remember is that when using the fast intercity trains like Paris - Geneva you do need a seat reservation.
I attended a British/American school in Lausanne back in the early 70s. My parents were taking language courses. Took many trips to Montreaux and Chateau Chillon.
Another great video. When I started my Swiss rail trip in Feb 2020 I travelled from Manchester to Chamonix but overnighted in Paris but with the limited number of options from Annecy it still took 10 hours just from Paris involving 3 trains and a bus. I arrived in Montreux towards the end of the trip with a beautiful decent on the narrow gauge railway from Interlaken which descends the very steep hillside, 0:20 timed perfectly with a beautiful sunset high above Lake Geneva. I stayed in the very old but lovey station hotel. The following day I left for Amsterdam but ended up overnighting in Köln due to storm Ciara which battered North West Europe.
I just found your channel yesterday thru a different video, and I just wanted to say, what a treasure. You’re wonderful and this channel is so entertaining. Thanks for making videos.
I remember the long line ups at St. Pancreas station when I travelled from London to Paris. Beautiful station though. I too was amazed at how fast they get people through security & passport check. Another stellar video.
Hmm, you got to do this again, but this time with shopping at Aldi in Montrose, and buying the same things at Aldi in Montreux, and compare price, taste, quality. Preferably you should buy 1 kilo of cheese, 1 kilo of ham, 1 kilo of minced beef, a collared shirt, 1 boxer shorts, 1 on pack of socks, one bread, a pack of butter and some tool they have on campaign. You can go by air both ways, anyway, thank you, is it tuesday you will be showing us Montreux? By the way, I miss the taxis in London driving on the platforms, whenever I/we was going to Bath or Penzance I/we took a taxi all the way to our coach....we were driven to our door on the train coach. However I don't remember how they checked the tickets then, because they had this system where you had to show your ticket to get on the platform. Unknown system in most other countries after the year 1910.

Maybe a Donny (Doncaster) to Donnybrook (where the RTÉ Montrose facility is)?
Lner😂 -empty, Lumo - empty, most Irish trains -full
Excellent trip.
I hope you enjoyed my hometown Montreux 👍🏼
Great journey as always.
I remember the long line ups at St. Pancreas station when I travelled from London to Paris. Beautiful station though. I too was amazed at how fast they get people through security & passport check. Another stellar video.
Yay another video 👍🏻
Don't know where you find the energy. I'd be buckled. Great video. 🙂
We all went down to Montreux
On the Lake Geneva Shoreline…
Good morning Steve well you did it with plenty of time to film another video 1 minute that should be no problem for you cheers take care 😘🌸🌺☕️🚂
Next up Montrose to Montreal? Great video. Many thanks. 😊
Might be a challenge by train though 😜
Great video Steve, thoroughly enjoyed this! Insane how close it was and fair play for managing to stay awake, that must have been the hardest. 👍🙂🚄🚄
Despite being shot from behind, that is still an incredible moustache when boarding the train from Paris to Switzerland.
