He is singing plain natural soul from the heart … Them boys had natural GOD given talent … sometimes it ‘s not always perfect .. because Life isn’t !!!
I used to play Funky Broadway in 1967 in night clubs.Later on i played in bands that played Let A Woman Be A Woman … Them Boys were the best Funk Band ever!! Dyke had that grovel soul hard voice that you felt !!
I set -up my Drums in my garage and played We got more Soul ,Let A woman be a Woman .. and other soulful classics !! This music has stood the TEST of time … At 72 years old My wife listens to me .. and Tell me “ I STILL GOT IT !!!!😅 Never give up what you Love !!!’😂
Man, Arlester 'Dyke' Christian could have been even more of an icon had he not gotten killed in that altercation in '71 at age 27. This guy did not PLAY!!!!! Listen to some of his other stuff. It like listening to Lee Fields, Charles Wright, Eddie Bo, Moody Scott, and many other unsung funky cats. The experience, if you are into it, is SURREAL!!!!!!!
He was funky but also mellow, listen to I'm so all alone. It should have been a soul classic not the b side of runaway people. It,'s right there with Charles Wright Loveland.
So sorry for the loss. You must have some great memories from way back then, I mean this was a drummer who gave the steady and funky drums to the one and only ARLESTER CHRISTIAN, the man was known to NOT live by the rules! Care to share?
To me, this is the absolute best funk band of this or any other era. So bare, but so full of sound, and just super-ultra-greasy. Every beat, every note, every word --- perfect. Funk does not get any better.
This is not the same lineup as the Funky Broadway, So Sharp and Wrong House days a lot of the original Blazers we're gone by the time this was recorded. No doubt this lineup is just as good though.
Arlester Dyke Christian was a threat to the master himself James Brown. He commanded the stage and was extremely dynamic. His band The Blazers included former members of the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band. Dyke was 27 years old when he was shot and killed in Phoenix Arizona.
That helps explain what this band was so tight and did so much with so little. Long time since I heard of the Watts 103rd Street Rythym Band. KDIA in Oakland played some great stuff in the 60's...otherwise a white kid from the burbs like me would have remained clueless. Grateful for the music they left. Wish they were all still here !
Sharee he was a Latino brother am I right? He played a wicked bass. Was he an original band member from the beginning who played on all the hits? May he R.I.P.
There was never another funk-meister more dear to me than Dyke. To this day, when I walk into the lair of my cohorts and comrades, they break out Dyke & The Blazers as a tribute to our profound respect for him as a sho' nuff originator of what funk was about. He and Johnny Taylor were the absolute best. And now ..... I listen to him every damn day.
Found these dudes the other day - instantly fell in love with their super fat rolling groove - read about dyke dying at 27 today - in the "27 club" - totally fucked. Amazing how devastated you can be from finding an amazing new favourite band - and feel so rotten when you read about somebody dying in shitty circumstances, and how shortchanged they were. Can't help imagining what they could have accomplished. The swing was strong in these dudes.
Hi everyone. I was born 1970 in New Zealand so I missed this action. As a child I was influenced by what my patents loved about music. Before my teens disco was it. Then into the eighties hip-hop stole me for a while. As I went into my thirties I started back tracking old school funk after finding out a lot of rap and hip-hop used these jams. All ways searching I came across this band. Oh boy! How fortunate I have been. Would just like to say that its a blessing to see family of this band comment on these heros of there day and even now in my eyes. Thank you to the families and thank you for the post. Stihlearning
Hey, Dyke and the Blazers did perform "We Got More Soul" on Dick Clark's American Bandstand back in 1969, also with a short interview too. He was on another show (a special) in 1970 doing "Runaway People"....can't recall the name of the special.
I've been searching this thing called internet like many others for years, just to find some live performances from this all FUNKY man. Not even the man himself (JAMES BROWN) the inventor of FUNK can´t compare to the gritty and down to earth grooves that this funky man gave us. THANKS!
This is a different lineup then the Funky Broadway, So Sharp and Wrong House recordings. A lot of the original Blazers were gone by the time this was recorded. This lineup is still just as good though.
Young Drummers .. Look at this drummer .. snare,Bass,hi hat .. perfect timing, accent where it suppose to be… He is only playing what is necessary for the song !! Not a lot .. just enough back -beat for the “Funk”
You're sure about that Brother Clint? I didn't know more footage from that show leaked out? I have them performing on a show out of San Diego called Soul time U.S.A. I just don't remember the song they performed, But i know my copy isn't clear as this!
Did James Brown, the master of funk, embellish from Dyke & the Blazers, or visa-versa? A radio sta in Austin Texas would play their music, definitely soulsoundin. 2:51 g
Its a shame Dyke had all that Talent in blew on Heroin They Killed him Right on Broadway just like the song he wrote about He was killed on Broadway in Phoenix Arizona
Peter Burlin - it certainly is a different take, setting it apart from the innumerable renditions of this chestnut. It reminds me somewhat of the arrangement that "Brother" Jack McDuff and David Newman cut of "But It's Alright", at around the same time, which plays up the dischordance between McDuff's B-3, Newman's Sax, and the rest of the band. ruclips.net/video/atMl9rZVtBs/видео.html

My Dad Alvin Battle played the bass guitar 🎸 in this Band!!!!!!!!
What a great voice
Legendary 😮💨🔥
In very VERY loving memory of Mr. Arlester "Dyke" Christian (1943 - 1971 R.I.P. Gone but NOT forgotten)
Man, Arlester 'Dyke' Christian could have been even more of an icon had he not gotten killed in that altercation in '71 at age 27. This guy did not PLAY!!!!! Listen to some of his other stuff. That's my brother on the drums Wayne Peterson, they called him baby Wayne,he is deceased now but they were a awesome group

He was a monster drummer, incredible groove, swagger and taste. Long live his legacy!
In the pocket. George Clinton said they were one of the few rare groups that could come with same energy ad as James brown's band.
Where was dyke from
Luv the Skating Bass Player too!
That drummer is hittin that snare on the one love it
Incredible ❤
HE GOT MORE SOUL! Best Original Funk Band EVER!
His voice just screams soul and funk
In-funking-credible!!!
To me, this is the absolute best funk band of this or any other era. So bare, but so full of sound, and just super-ultra-greasy. Every beat, every note, every word --- perfect. Funk does not get any better.
Agreed! 🖤

I have sung this a thousand times while working in long term care. This is the best interpretation, ever.

R.I.P to my grandfather DC Seville. He's the one on the right.
He was a total badass, long live his legacy!
@@Miist3rDuce1 yes. That's him.
Bass player? He's got it locked down though, right!
Sharee he was a Latino brother am I right? He played a wicked bass. Was he an original band member from the beginning who played

thank you.
Dyke and The Blazers made the funkiest records in the history of funk!
There was never another funk-meister more dear to me than Dyke. You spoke like a bicycle wheel amigo. Right On!!
The quintessential Soulman 🎵🎤🎸👍🏽
The Brother on the bass is gettin it in.
I can't get enough of this video!
The drummer playing with just a snare and bass drum and just a hihat for hardware just brilliant
Was thinking same thing
You know it's lip syncing right?
I remember when Funky Broadway got banned on Bay Area Radio much to our funky chagrin.
Thank you J. Geils Band for guiding to this great band.
Boston radio station said they were from Buffalo NY. I'm happy to know that. I was born @ Bgh.

This is one of the best things I've ever seen!

Well hell yes.
THE most legendary and intense two minutes and fifty one seconds-length video on RUclips!!
This is a different lineup then the Funky Broadway, So Sharp and Wrong House recordings. A lot of the original Blazers were gone by the time this was recorded. This lineup is still just as good though.

FABULEUX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He funked that out!
Favorite version
Man! I had a shirt like the ones the band is wearing except mine was black. In those days we wore some very colorful pants so it went with everything.
Man, I love this song!
I Love This Group!!
Funky !
Thanks for the post. One of best groups ever !
One my favorite entertainers.
where did you get this pure diamond piece of video? First video I've seen of one of my all time favorites.
My man, my main man!
Surely there must be other footage of Dyke and the Blazers. If so please upload. Always loved his signature sound
❤️❤️❤️
Young Drummers .. Look at this drummer .. snare,Bass,hi hat .. perfect timing, accent where it suppose to be… He is only playing what is necessary for the song !! Not a lot .. just enough back -beat for the “Funk”
❤
Do you guys have the extended video with the dancers. I believe that it was from “Soul Time USA”.
Funky Buffalo Legends
Arlester Christian, aka "Dyke", was shot to death at age 27 (yes, he's in the 27 Club...) on a street in Phoenix, Arizona in 1971. 😥
aww
another member of the 27 club
You're sure about that Brother Clint? I didn't know more footage from that show leaked out? I have them performing on a show out of San Diego called Soul time U.S.A. I just don't remember the song they performed, But i know my copy isn't clear as this!
I'm looking at the set.. It looks like the set from SOUL...
😀❤️😘
What's the name of the show they're performing on?
The show is called "SOUL" in NYC WNET Channel 13.
Clint C Brantley
This is from Soul Time USA minus the dancer footage.
Did James Brown, the master of funk, embellish from Dyke & the Blazers, or visa-versa? A radio sta in Austin Texas would play their music, definitely soulsoundin. 2:51 g

This is the most intense lip sync of all time. They must have burned up the stage when they played live.
My uncle is j.v hunt

not bad. but very odd chord progression and sounds quite off key
