  • Anticipating a confrontation with NATO, the Soviet Union manufactured vast amounts of military equipment throughout its lifetime. Following its dissolution in 1991, its arsenal was divided among the newly independent states that were once part of the Union and sold abroad on the global market. Today, despite their obsolescence, many of these weapon systems continue to play crucial roles in the arsenals of various armies worldwide. Recognizing a lucrative market, various defense sector companies have begun offering modernization packages for these weapons, claiming to be able to do anything from breathing some new life into the outdated equipment to bringing it up to par with the most modern systems in the world, depending on the customer's ability to pay.
Thanks to its history as part of the Soviet Union, Ukraine inherited a substantial number of tanks and specialized factories upon gaining independence. This left the Ukrainians in a good position to begin work on their own modernization solutions for the inherited weapon systems. In the early 2000s, two modernization packages for the Soviet T-62 Main Battle Tank (MBT) were developed: the T-62AG and the T-62AGM. Both kits were capable of elevating any 2nd Generation T-62 MBT variant to 3rd Generation MBT standards of the time. While the T-62AG progressed to the prototype stage, the T-62AGM remained mostly a concept. However, had the development finished, it would have been an upgrade kit similar to the T-55AGM, just for the more modern T-62 platform.

Apart from a lot of local Ukrainian industry that makes tanks (especially the Kharkiv Plant) have now either been moved to Western Ukraine or blown up, why would Ukraine need to upgrade T-62 tanks when it would be a waste of resources?
Its much more viable to get stocks of ex-Soviet tanks from friendly nations such as Poland and Czechia delivering T-72's, upgrade and refurbish Ukraine's large T-64 fleet, and in addition get Western NATO tanks which are readily available.

I can do a thing and I can do a thing at large / sufficient scale are not the same. Due to economic woes between 1992 and 2014 Ukraine sold most of their Soviet surplus. And those same economic woes meant they didn't produce many tanks, and so the plant works all went looking for other work.

well the Russians due to desperation in the current Russo Ukraine war brought out several hundred T-62s from storage, the Russians had an estimated few thousand in storage but many of these were junk, non salvatageable due to very poor state in the decades of storage. Many Russian T-62s were destroyed or captured. In the current Kharkov offensive 2024, Russians T-62s and 55s consituted the majority of the Russian tanks deployed.

According to Oryx only 9 T-54/55's were destroyed or captured and 147 T-62's. In comparison , Oryx claimed that approximately 1000 T-72's were lost. The drastic difference between these numbers, shows that the T-54, T-55 and T-62 were mobilised in lesser numbers and possibly used in less aggressive actions. Another thing is, these older tanks were mostly spotted on the Donetsk.
While on the Kharkov front, the Russians were mostly spotted with T-72's. In addition, I haven't seen a single photo or even an article that the Russians were conducting that offensive with T-54, T-55 or T-62. Not even the Ukrainian propaganda made such a claim, even though it would have been beneficial to them to claim that "the desperate Russians conduct their last offensive with old T-54, T-55 and T-62 tanks"
