Principality Cardiff Half Marathon
Sunday 1 October 2023
The Principality Building Society Cardiff Half Marathon has grown into one of the largest and most exciting road races in the United Kingdom. It is now one of Europe’s largest half marathons and is Wales’ largest mass participation and multi-charity fundraising event.
The event has grown significantly since it was founded by Barnardo’s in 2003 when 1,500 runners took part. It now attracts a mass race field of over 27,500 registered runners alongside world-class athletes in a trio of fiercely contested men’s, women’s and wheelchair elite races.
It hosts the Welsh Half Marathon Championships annually and has hosted the World (2016) and Commonwealth (2018) Half Marathon Championships. It has been awarded an Elite Road Race Label by World Athletics.
The race is a member of the SuperHalfs, a global series of the world’s most prestigious half marathons including races in Lisbon, Prague, Copenhagen, Cardiff and Valencia.
Its flat, fast course passes all of the city’s most breathtaking scenery and iconic landmarks including Cardiff Castle, the Principality Stadium, Civic Centre and stunning Cardiff Bay.
Thousands of spectators turn out to cheer on the runners in a city renowned for its sporting passion. Cardiff is a lively capital city offering unique attractions, world-class sports stadiums, vibrant entertainment, waterside eateries and seemingly endless parkland.
The race has been sponsored by Principality Building Society since 2023 and is supported by a number of other partners. It supports a large number of charities and good causes, with more than £3 million raised each year.
The event now offers a full weekend of activities, with a host of family-friendly activities at Saturday’s Cardiff Half Junior preceding Sunday’s half marathon.
It is organised by Run 4 Wales, a not-for-profit charitable trust set up to manage and deliver major sporting events in Wales.
Race route
The route takes runners past the capital’s most iconic landmarks with beautiful scenery and historic buildings. The predominately flat and fast course makes it ideal for beginners and elites.
The race starts outside Cardiff Castle and runners then head down past the Principality and Cardiff City Stadiums on the way to Penarth. They take in the glorious Penarth Marina before crossing the barrage and heading to Cardiff Bay. Runners run right through the heart of the bay taking in the Norwegian Church and Wales Millennium Centre.
The course then heads towards the north of the city and runners will complete a loop of the beautiful Roath Park Lake before the grandstand finish in the heart of the city at the Civic Centre.
The wheelchair race will start at 9:50am. Elite, white, green and red pens will start at 10:00am and yellow and blue pens will start at 10:10am. Check out the interactive route map above to see the route in more detail.
The course will be policed and marshalled throughout.
EN-ROUTE TOILETS: There are toilets not only at the start of the race and in the Event Village, but also within the first mile of the race and around the course at all drink stations. If you need the toilet, please use the toilets.
If you are caught urinating in a public or non designated area you will be banned from all future events.
You are a one man atmosphere machine!!!!
Absolutely brilliant as always. I hated that run this year. So hot and I was recovering from Covid. Really raised my spirits this morning seeing you have such a good time around the same course. Well done as always. I bet that steak bake tasted epic!
@jdpjamesp - Thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and yes, nothing quite beats a Steak bake that has marinated in a sweaty pocket for 13 miles 😀 It was awarm one this year. I hope you feel better soon and might see you at the start line next year? 🙂
Did I see you at the Maverick Afan last weekend? I have a distinct memory of a chap running past me in a Greggs vest!
Hi @SAMBAM-Gets-it 👋 yes that was me 😀 I'm still recovering from that run it was brutal 🥵 how did you get on? 🙂
Omg that was amazing. Your energy and spirit is amazing. You must be super fit. 🎉🎉🎉well done to you from Ireland 🇮🇪
Thank you very much @shazzaturley1234 glad you enjoyed the video 🙂Not sure about being super fit. I'm not sure I would have made it to the end without the great crowds cheering me along 😀 There are lots of our other running adventures on the channel if you liked that one 🙂

Wow!! You at the finishing "sprint", relaxing and eating a pasty whilst the others sprint for their lives!! 😂😂
@FastMode-on5jf - Glad you enjoyed the video. Yes i've been one of those guys sprinting at the end a few times and a lesuirely job whilst eating a Steak bake is far more fun in my opinion 😋😂
