    I made two of these using the "Nurture" color line for my daughter to go to college with. She and her roomie will be able to have a coordinated room (if they want to). The other plan was that she and her little sister (she's 13 and has Down syndrome, so is an extra special buddy) could sleep under the same blanket and face time each other daily. I've been printing the free patterns and am making a binder. Your generosity in putting out patterns AND the tutorials is so very much appreciated. I leave your tutorials running to give you extra views and keep me company when I'm sewing. You've also made me a fan of cozy quilt designs!

    I made this quilt for my teen age grandson for his birthday. I used the fabric called pumpkin patch and a cream background. He loves it!! Drags it to watch tv, to bed every night and “ oh dear “ to hunting camp. But it makes me happy that he likes it so much.

    I am a self taught ( with the help of you tube videos) quilter....or I should say piecer. I came upon one of yours and now look forward to watching them every time. Love the star log cabin. Anxious to try one of your quilt kits. They look so easy and fun! Thank you!

    • @newbeequilter
      @newbeequilter 7 лет назад

      + Ann Bonifant - You are the first person in comments on YT quilting videos I've "heard" (and viewed) that made that distinction. Piecing a quilt top and ALSO doing the quilting oneself either by hand or on one's domestic machine or longarm machine is what my understanding of a bonefide quilter is. You can be a quilt piecer (or piece quilts), sandwich and baste it, and put the binding on after you get it back from the person who actually did the quilt stitching, but in actuality -- one is not "a quilter" until one stitches the quilt - whether that's a potholder, wall hanging, baby quilt, throw to bed-size, or art quilt. But I think someone who only does the quilting (like an employee who doesn't do any piecing on their own or "company time") can also say, "I'm a quilter". I'm sure there are many people who with disagree with my understanding of the word, but I wanted to let you know that I agree with your forthrightness. I wonder what Donna would say?

    Donna, I don't know if this is your original block or if it's been around since even before the Civil War in the U.S., but I've not seen it anywhere else - on YT anyway. I think it's a terrific type of log cabin block and more fun to make than a traditional one. Can't wait to see Part II where you show us how you did that border with the pinwheel. I hope you sell lots of kits with that pattern; I'm sure it will end up being a best seller with that star in the middle. BTW, I enjoy seeing you sew and join the seams so beautifully; I never get tired of clear close-ups or any tips you repeat as it reinforces the importance of why you're doing it and how it results in the accuracy, success, and satisfaction of constructing the quilt.

      I also stumbled but down the rabbit hole into a wonderful place. So pleased I did. I realise it must take a lot of time making the tutorials, but agree that just one block in another colour way would be nice. If I lived closer I'd offer my services for free. Your blocks are always so perfect looking must be because you cut your own strips. I'm find in known package strips they can be so uneven. Your going to have quite a following and much deserved.

    I love it. I wish you would tell us beginners how many jellyrolls it would take to make a queen size quilt! I didn't care that much for the lighter block. The block with the browns is beautiful.

    • @jmdenison
      @jmdenison 7 лет назад +7

      a jelly roll strip is 42" by 2.0" without the seam allowances. That means one jelly roll strip is 84 sq. in. I make my queen size quilts 80 by 90 or 7200 sq. in.. A queen size bed is 60 by 80 so that gives you a 10" hang over on both sizes and 10" at the bottom. make it 80 by 100 inches if you want to tuck and cover pillows. (you didn't say). so 7200/84=84 strips or about 2 packages assuming little or no waste. BUT you might want to just use a border. I would plan on 2 packages of 40 strips and add a border to the size you want. Or this is just a perfect excuse to buy a bunch of jelly rolls claiming you didn't know. But you knew. Basic arithmetic.

    • @Sharon-pb7so
      @Sharon-pb7so 7 лет назад +4

      JoAnne Denison...I thought a jelly roll was 2 1/2" wide. You can make a pretty good sized quilt out of 2 jelly rolls. I just love this version of a log cabin.

    • @Ronibearable
      @Ronibearable 7 лет назад +5

      She said this 6 block on is 41 x 57, so a 12 block version would be 82 x114. Which is big enough for a queen with room to cover pillows. OR, make the borders on the 114 side smaller or leave them off. Also, her KITS on her website, she tells you how many to use to make Queen or a King. Her kits are awesome, open plastic and start sewing. No cutting.

    • @jordanfabrics8380
      @jordanfabrics8380  7 лет назад +7

      For this pattern I would probably use 2 to 3 jelly rolls. I had a fair amount of scrap strips left over that I used for the Pinwheel border, but I could have made another Starry Log Cabin block or two.
      I would make 20 blocks for a queen. This will give a patchwork that measures 64x80 inches and then you can add borders.

    • @jmdenison
      @jmdenison 7 лет назад +1

      don't forget to take out the seam allowances in your calculations. you want the top to be 80 by 90. a jelly roll is about 2.5" by 42 to 44", so I took out 1/2" width and length to arrive at 2" by 42" which is what you see. the other 1/2 in. in each dimension is in the seams.

    When I'm ironing a lot of seems meeting at on place, I use a tailors' wooden clapper. The wood draws the steam from the cloth making it dry fast and the weight (I use a piece of 2x4) of the block holds the ironed section down, keeping everything so much crisper. Try it and let me know what you think.

      Hey, you're in the biz. Get some on ebay cheap. I got my baby Go! by waiting for $66 inclg shi, I think. I got the larger one after I got the smaller one for $125. Start with the Baby Go. See if you like it. Dozens of dies for the Baby Go, including my favs, the angel, the hearts, the Rose of Sharon, crazy flowers, the Ohio Start, etc. I saw you cut those diamonds and sew them individually rather than strip piecing, so I know you have the patience for non strip piecing piece sewing. If you use heat and bond II you can just fuse, die cut and iron on dozens of types of decorations such as hearts, butterflies, critters, etc. and create a quick baby quilt. I prefer to use the Wash Away Applique and die cut the design, then at work while I"m on the phone with clients, I turn and glue. When I get home, I do an applique stitch. I secure the applique with the fuse tape first. Might be fun to put these in your shop and have customers cut their own decorations with your scrap and just iron on your sample quilts for $2 a design. I think Joann's should have them in house to do this too. I might pitch it to them. Then again, I think if you have to wait in line at the cutting counter (I live in Chicago and the super Joann's can have long lines, believe it or not), I think they should have starch and ironing boards so the fabric will be perfect when you get home, but that's just me. Silly me.

    If you put a piece of clear tape on top of the line you draw on your machine bed & table, the line wont rub off. Gorilla packing tape is awesome but any clear or almost clear tape will work. If you want to take it off, just clean with alcohol, which removes the tape residue and the marker.

    • @jordanfabrics8380

      You will probably need 2 jelly rolls for a queen size. The blocks have a finished size of 16 inches, so 20 blocks will make a 64 x 80 inch patchwork. You can then add borders to make the quilt larger.

    Love your tutorials. Seems so easy but I'm still afraid to start. Have a bunch of little cu, t outs, fat quarters, jelly rolls etc. I asked you about your ironing table, looks it is not padded. Could you please tell me why...??

      Our ironing board is padded. We use heavy duty canvas over cotton batting stapled onto a piece of plywood. The padding does make it easier to iron patchwork.

      The star block should be 8 1/2" after you stitch it, and has a finished size of 8"
