  • Come with us as we cross the Tanami Desert from Alice Spring’s Northern Territory to Halls Creek in Western Australia in 3 days/ 2 nights! The Tanami Desert, one of the most isolated and arid areas on earth. Crossing the expanse of the Tanami Desert, the Tanami Road is actually a fairly well-formed gravel road (the first 296km is bitumen). It is, however, an isolated route, that is closed after rain. It is recommended that 4WD vehicles are used for the road and outlying areas and you will need to be well-prepared and self-sufficient. The longest stretch on the road without fuel supplies is 772km.Aside from the rugged landscape, hundreds of km’s of corrugated road you can also pay a visit to Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater National Park to checkout the second largest crater in the world. Alice Springs to Halls Creek via the Tanami Desert is exactly 1000km shorter then going via Katherine. Sent from my iPhone

    Nice Guys
We did it 33 years ago corrugations 7 to 10 inches deep.
Rabbits Flat stayed the night wild, they were selling fuel $2 half a litre.
Loved it thanks for taking us along with you changed so much Cheers

    Love your video.
I have driven the Tanami four times -
First time it was rough but OK.
Second time it was 80 kms all the way from the Canning Stock Route (Near Wolfe Creek - which we drove for 21 days from Wiluna) to Alice Springs.
Third time from Halls Creek it was 300 kms of mud.
And the fourth time it was Hell on earth with wrecked trailers, Roof Racks & burnt out vehicles ( The graders couldn't get in there for 6 weeks which is why the track can be so different).
As a fun fact we have had strange things happen on all our trips around Wolfe Creek (The movie spells it wrong)

You can actually walk down inside and it's quite eerie. I was out there in 2006. And they do have a designated campground with showers and toilet

The Tanami depends on when it was graded last & can be anything from "Freeway" to hell on earth.

Mrs Richards: " I paid for a room with a view!"
Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) " That is Torquay, Madam."
Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!"
Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?"
