Previously we looked at the worst rated and worst ranked WrestleMania events of all time, so lets do it again only this time we'll look at the worst Royal Rumble PPVs. The Rumble is a fan favourite, the match itself has given WWF / WWE fans countless memorable moments and it's helped launch a ton of main event careers, but some of the events have been a little underwhelming. From the predictability of the 1996 Royal Rumble (along with the lack of talent in rumble match itself) to the "overbooked" 1999 Royal Rumble that was focused on Stone Cold Steve Austin and Vince McMahon, theres a few Rumble events that haven't lived up to fan expectations.
This video uses cagematch's rating system to determine the worst WWF Royal Rumble event of all time.

Hard disagree on the 1990 Rumble. That's my favorite Rumble from the Hogan era. Hard to explain to new fans how exciting it was to see Hogan and Warrior go at each other for the first time during the Rumble.
And yeah, the Hogan winning might seem predictable.. but the first two Rumbles were won by Duggan and Big John Studd, midcarders, so you really didn't know who was gonna win. It's not like today where you know a main eventer is gonna win it.

'95 was trash. They tried to make a big deal of Shawn going post to post but neglect to call attention to the fact that it was half the time as usual. They also literally ran out of guys. Spots came with nobody entering. Not the "oh he got jumped in the back" kind of thing, either. Just blank spots without explanation.

    • @The1NickSkyline
      @The1NickSkyline Год назад +3

While I can understand people not liking the 1995 Royal Rumble match (trust me, I share that sentiment), I feel like it’s just as important to look at the show it comes from as a whole.
Now, if this were a list of what I felt were the “Top 10 Worst Royal Rumble PPVs”, 1995 would definitely be on there.
The show has a bright spot that doesn’t shine as bright as I think most people were hoping for: Diesel and Bret Hart put on a banger of a WWF title match that’s unfortunately hampered by two things: One is the length of the match being much longer than anyone anticipated. The other is poor officiating, which overseeing the interference and use of weapons could have led to a dirty pinfall. But it instead leads to a disappointing No Contest finish when you could have saved everything for after Bret tapped out Diesel with his Sharpshooter. I feel like the finish of this match would have been a lot better if it were a post-match brawl instead of a catalyst for a No Contest.
The show has three major duds, and the Rumble match is one of them. It’s earned its reputation as the original black sheep of Royal Rumble matches. I think the main reason the intervals are only one minute and why HBK and Bulldog are both the first two men in and the last two left, is solely because of a creative dry spell the WWF was going through. A dry spell that would last until Vince Russo was hired by the company. Also, having Pamela Anderson walk you down to ring for your WWF title match at WrestleMania wasn’t something I’d consider a bonus for winning. I won't deny the historical significance of Shawn Michaels entering at #1 and going on to win the whole thing, but other than that, there's no reason to watch this match unless you want to see HBK dangling off the ring apron with one foot touching the ground, while "Rule Britannia" blares through the PA system.
The second big dud is a clunker of a match between Undertaker and IRS (Taker would feud with Ted DiBiase’s Million Dollar Corporation for far too long after this PPV AND he would lose his trademark urn to Kama). Some druids come in and attack the Undertaker, which is probably the worst and least sensical part of the entire bout.
As for the third dud, it’s a tag team title match to crown new champions, against two teams made up of singles wrestlers that I don’t think anyone wanted to see hold the belts. That just showed you how completely thin the roster in WWF was at that time: Bob Holly and The Kid had to form a makeshift team just to have something to do, and they ended up winning.
And as for the IC Title match between Jeff Jarrett and Razor Ramon, there was no reason why this match needed to be restarted. The in-ring work is very solid, as in it’s better than what you would expect from Jeff and just as good as you’d expect from Ramon, but the angles that kept undercutting it were just intrusive.
All that put together makes for a not-very-good show highlighted by a Rumble match that’s far from worth anything, let alone your time. It may not be the worst thing on the 1995 Royal Rumble PPV, but it is one of the worst Rumble matches ever. Or...it would have been, before 2014 happened.
      TLDR: *Agreed, Mad Shogun.*

I definitely fit the description of the fans you were talking about. I think I fit the demographic that you laid out of people that watched during the golden era choosing different entries, because yeah I was in 8th grade I remember when Royal Rumble '99 was on and that was probably my peak fandom to be honest, I would bet it's a lot of other people's as well. I feel like a lot of people checked out right around the end of the invasion storyline too. I think I was in Junior year of High School and too busy focusing on working and girls, so I didn't really have time for wrestling anymore. Never thought 96 got enough love. Yeah, there were roster issues (which were more prevalent in 95, IMO), but with the stuff with Goldust and Razor, Sunny being presented in a way that would lead to the rise of the Divas in WWF, Vader’s debut and dominance in the Rumble, plus the shades of grey in Diesel’s character development (not to mention him flipping off Taker at the end of the night), there were a lot of seeds planted here for what ended up turning into the Attitude Era. People get hung up on the star power issue, but once you look past that, I think this show has a lot more meat on the bone than a lot of Rumbles when you get down to storylines and intrigue.

    • @rw8185

The list was about the ppv itself not what comes after or what came before. Secondly the 1999 Rumble match completely brutalizes any sense of logics as you can obviously just come and go in the match as you please and sit out a major part of the match if you please. That'd be like someone taking the ball and run out of the arena with it during a World Cup football match. The other players get another ball, the player who left is replaced and the carries on. Only for the lost player to return with 3 mins, run in with the ball he took with him and kick it into the net while other 22 players are busy with the actual match ball and still have the goal scored by the returning player count. Or for a boxer to refuse to enter the ring for the first 11 rounds only to run in with 30 secs left of the 12th round and smack his opponent in the face when he was looking away and win the match.

I actually liked the 1990 Royal Rumble, the roster showed the best of the Golden Age, star power like Hogan, Savage, Andre, Perfect, Dibiase, Piper, Warrior, Rhodes, etc. The Hogan and Warrior confrontation was epic and still gives me chills when I go back and watch that moment. The Rumble was still new and random enough where a predictable winner wasn't foreseen (this started in 1991).
I was also extremely surprised that 1995 wasn't on this list. Although the story of Michaels starting at #1 and going all the way to the end was good, the roster was worse then paper thin. It was the dirt worst of the New Generation with 1 minutes intervals to hide the lack of star power. That didn't even work. Odd how the top single wrestlers were missing and going for the tag titles while all the lower tier tag teams littered the Rumble. 1995 should have been on this list, not 1990.

It was full of jobbers. I have fond memories of the PPV however. Being one of the events, watched later via which got me into wrestling. It was as if a wrestling fan booked it in accordance with his or her own preference with no regards to history, rules or storylines. Either that or someone being drunk, nothing made any sense.
