      @@MrRobster1234 Definitely no blower on that hot rod. The carbs appeared to be side mounted. They almost looked like two barrel units. Now, from a strategic criminal plot you would be way better off in not having a vehicle so noticeable. Even back then, radios were faster than cars.

    There’s nothing as good as the old B & W TV episodes. For example Highway Patrol, Andy Griffith, The Rifleman, Gunsmoke etc. Thanks again

      my favorite Highway Patrol episode. Remember seeing this episode when this was a new show back in the late 50’s. Nobody like Broderick Crawford! Watch him as the bad guy in “The fastest gun alive” with Glenn Ford as your hero.

      I liked them myself, watching them in syndicated reruns in the 1960's. Did you notice in the final credits "audo supervisor Quinn Martin"? Do you suppose that's the same chap who produced "The FBI" and several other detective shows?

      The law states if you hit and kill some one while driving, and some one is with you, that person is as guilty as you are.
      So, if his pal didn't get shot at the end, he'd join his friend in the pen.

      @@johnandrew1727 The one in this episode is a 1932 Ford 'Roadster', customized (chopped, channeled, nosed, decked, shaved, wishbones, exhaust cutouts, OHV V8), with two carburetors.
      For all the dialogue about superchargers, however, the 'hotrod' shown ( 8:14 ) does not have one at all.

      Just who the heck was he? He wasn't Chief, Lieutenant, just Mr. Matthews. Maybe a commissioner? And it must have been Rhode Island because the size of the state isn't very big. Except that Rhode Island doesn't have deserts and mountains from the wild west.

    The 32 Duece Roadster is still around. it was lifted back up (unchanelled )in 1970 and fitted with Ford Flathead. It's the same car as shown being flipped in the '56 Movie, Hot Rod Girl .

    In Australia we had Highway Patrol a little later when Brodrick Crawford was driving a 58 Dodge. At the end he would always say; "Leave your blood at the Red Cross, not on the highway."

    As a boy I watched this show with my brothers when bad guys always got caught....and yes I noticed the two duces, and no super charger. I miss that America....enlisted during Vietnam....everything changed....not for the better.

    The road they're on looks to be Devonshire Blvd in the San Fernando Valley at that time. It was lined with the Eucalyptus trees for miles like a tunnel. I used to drive it late at night with a cup of coffee and the radio going . If it's not, then it's one of the many roads that had the Eucalyptus that were so prevalent back then.

      @@richardcurrin8940 yeah a lot of us took chances back in the 50s but i don't remember too many stupid enough to stand in the middle of the road with a noisy car coming, but in case some of the commentators don't know this, drum brakes were a little more efficient than discs, plus they had the ability to pull off the drums for higher speeds with no drag, the heat factor plus the ease of changing the pads were key points. lots of us in the old days used the big lincoln finned aluminum drums and there were brake and clutch places that could put great shoes together for you.

    I love watching all of these "serious" old police shows just for all of the over acting. Dragnet is another good one. I get a laugh every time Jack Webb gets going on one of his sermons. Does the man even take a breath?

      Police are trained in chase tactics. If they don't see you ahead, but there's a turn , then they know you turned. Hard to get away from.

    Gotta say, that thing sure sounded good. Reminded me of large, tuned pipes. Even though those tires were, uhm, ... well, the roadster seemed to handle very well. I just haven't gotten used to all the tire screeching on sand and dirt in these shows.

    Even today, criminals don't seem to realize that radio signals travel at the speed of light, which is 600 million meters per second. That is much faster than 130 miles per hour.
    The writers of this show don't seem to realize that a convertible and a roadster are not the same thing. Also, a pair of 2 barrels is not the same thing as a supercharger.

    I realize it is just a TV show but as an engineer and old motor head myself I feel compelled to mention that car engine is not supercharged...there is no blower on that engine.

      Back in the day, diners carried the payroll for businesses in the area. Even in 1986 , they was how we got paid while in the military! Except it was in the gym on post!

    No supercharger..Just twin carbs going straight into the intake.. Nice watching these old shows with clear pictures and not having to run outside and turn the antenna every few minutes to get a clear picture.. ..

      Now they are 18 minutes of show and 12 minutes of ads.
      Plus now, they all suck.

      Old shows were 50 min out of 60 new shows are 45 or less per hour it make a big difference for plot development .

    I can’t help but thinking..my first car, a 1964 Pontiac GTO, Sliver Gray, Black Vinyl Bucket seats, duel exhaust, big 389 up front..man, what I give to get that one back..had the car until 1975..no air, no FM radio, installed an 8 track..that’s the way it was..great!

    I like the 1956 Pontiac Star Chief, 4 door hardtop sedan with V-8 engine which delivers 227 horsepower, known as the Stratostreak. It features fender skirts as the original accessory, two tone paint, and wide whitewall tires. Fender skirts came as early as 1933 with fenders are skirted fenders through the early 1990s, such as Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham.

    Well i learned some thing. The Dynaflow transmission in that buick works the same as a
    Hydramatic you'd find in an Olds you have to roll forward a bit to get it in reverse.
    You'll see that at the end of the show.
    They have no park position & the shift pattern is odd.
    I get to drive a 49 Olds once and a while
    and you need to learn to leave room ahead of you if you want to back up.
    That motor in the roadster is an Olds Rocket. (big breather up front dist in back)
    could be twin carters "not sure" too big to be strombergs

      Truck drivers did, Detroit Diesel came out with their 2 stroke diesel in 1938 that was the first mass produced engines that used blowers . A very distinct sound, especially without mufflers

    Looks like Valley Circle at the edge of Chatsworth, CA, a favorite spot with the movie ranches nearby. Several episodes were filmed in that area throughout the series. More than likely Devonshire Street that had the various diners.

      The "last job" diner was at the NE corner of Saticoy & Balboa in Van Nuys. It was Jeb's Diner, now iirc a Thai restaurant. Monahan's bar can be seen across the street. The buildings are still there.

      @@loumontcalm3500 Cool! I see it on Google Maps street view. The bar building is on the southeast corner on Saticoy, correct? I'll drive by tomorrow for sure. One episode I was able to see a street sign and they were on Valley Circle near Saticoy. All orchards, like this episode.

      @@loumontcalm3500 I drove over there today and am miffed. The northeast corner of Saticoy and Balboa is a relatively modern corner mini-mall with a Fatburger on the Saticoy side. The hotrod was definitely parked right there on Saticoy facing the wrong direction. My guess is that the building was there prior to the mini-mall, but you say that both buildings are still standing.

      @@jeffsiegel4879 wow! The Monahan bar building on the south side with the slanting sign is still there? I used to live close to there, didn't know they tore down that corner. There was a bar on that side too, and Van Nuys auto wrecking was east where that big building sits. Sad.
      Next time I'm in that area I'll go by.

    The eucalyptus trees were planted as windbreaks for the orange trees. They grew up, but when they were young, they were bushy and protected the young orange trees from the wind.
