I introduced a bird that will not look in the direction of the BBEG.
It also shows up to stare at characters who are toiling needlessly/futilely.
Despite the players having a cage the bird likes to sit in, the players caught on to the bird appearing whenever they're off track, long before discovering that its head would not pivot in one direction.

interesting idea the compass points you towards a bond based objective that quickly goes from appearing to be a reward to being a curse. as it destroys all hope of that bond remaining.
