Love Mizuno. Love the looks. Love the feel. Have loved the Tour/Forged combo in the past (919). Super excited about the 923 Tours with the copper underlay and what I feel like is an improved overall look. All the feedback seems to be that they are excellent. However, it really sucks that they have decided to jack the lofts so much on the Forged irons that these two are now almost unblendable unless you carry 2 - 7 irons. They wanted so bad for the Forged to be a better looking "players distance" club, they just jacked the lofts and called it tech, and totally lost sight of the very common Tour/Forged combo. Clearly they appreciate combo sets as they have done this with the SEL's in the past and seem to work at keeping the looks consistent through-out a line up. I don't want to have 5/6 degree gaps, strengthening lofts (adding offset and reducing bouce) just to be able to have a proper 4-P set. I also don't want to have two 7 irons, as pulling the wrong one time after time would start to be frustrating.
I just purchased these today. The feel off the face is so pure. I cant wait to get on the course with them. I will getting close to 7500 spin rate with the 7 iron.
I just bought this set today!! Omfg! Wow lol. Got them brand new for half the price. So i didnt wanna pass on them. Even though ive never had blades before. Im in a great place right now where ive been hitting my GI irons pretty consistently. So i thought i would take the risk. I went straight to the driving range and wow. The hits are pure and not at all punishing on mishits. Only thing now is distance. Because of the higher lofts. My distances have gone down about 10 yards per club. Honestly...its still very rewarding to hit. Im very excited to play on a course with these!! No regrets!!! 🙌🏽 woohoo!! Lol
In this case, don't necessarily think about the number iron you are hitting but think more so of the loft you are hitting. Put them side by side to your old GI irons and I bet the distance per lot difference is marginal 👍🏻 best way to think about distance is to understand what loft hit what, that way you can easily flick between sets and have no issues controlling distance 👍🏻
Love the tour. It's much better looking than the 221 at address. Much more welcoming. I only got 2mph more than my old players cavity but definitely worth an upgrade. I think more manufacturers should go towards satin finish. A great thing about the Tours vs. other brands is the no upcharge for the project x steel shaft.
Absolutely, it's been the benchmark of the Mizuno Custom Fitting experience for some time. Some shafts cost a crazy amount so upcharaging them would be crazy money 🤯👍🏻👍🏻
I've been gaming the 900 Tours for five years and when Mizuno started doing copper on the MP line I was really thinking I would have to go shiny at some point. Watching this makes me look forward to a Mizuno demo day this spring. Thanks for the in-depth review.
@@AskGolfNut Shaft profiles matter. I fought the XP105 shafts I was fitted with for my Tours for eight months because the fitter insisted I needed a lighter shaft to get the ball in the air. Talked to the Mizuno rep and their swing analyzer recommended the KBS C Taper 120 shaft. The difference is striking.
I went with the 919 tours because the MP20’s hadn’t come out yet. Curious how they feel compared to the MP18 Blades with no copper underlay? Can you do a little comparison between these 923s and the 919s! They look so similar that swapping some worn down irons should be easy 🤞🏾like you said the older your models were small but not tiny but didn’t quite have the MP blade feel etc.. if these new ones shrunk slightly, little small blade length, less offset and copper they make total sense. They’re blades with a fraction of help
After I got my 921 HMs, I had to go out and add the 4i as a driving iron - 207 average off a tee, Then I discovered the ST-X 220 4H. Winter, the 4H is clearly better. Summer, we will wait and see. The question I would like to ask is whether Mizuno are missing a trick. The sound difference reminded me of your review of standard vs Denim copper, and the ultra soft feel there. - Would it work on the rest of the of the iron range? (this may be functional marketing) and - what if they were to chrome plate OVER a copper layer on the wedges? I adore the look and feel on the denim copper, but I'm seeing people report very fast wear rates on the grooves. Best of both worlds?
Yeah! Very well done. Best review on RUclips of these irons for sure. You have a great way about you and cut through all the marketing hype and BS to get to the nitty gritty and true performance of the club. Thats what true buyers want and certainly what I want. My only real dissapointment with this iron is they dont do it in a 2 and 3 iron. I get it - the modern day setup is hybrids into the mid irons etc etc, but I cannot stand hybrids and have always been a long iron player. (Yes I still carry a 1 iron which is non conforming - so sue me) I think hybrids are the worst thing ever invented in golf period. But these irons partnered with the J23 Cobalt wedges - I cant see you going wrong with this setup and the looks .. gorgeous. Real bragging rights for sure... who cares if you cant hit em properly... I'm not going to win the next US Open golf tournament lets face it.... well I just might with these in the bag. I'll get iron covers to protect the soft forging ... nothing worse when come time to sell em on ebay and they are bag chatted to buggery.
I had the pleasure of hitting the 923 tour and the 221 alongside my Titleist 716 cbs, and i can say there was not a great deal of difference in feel between the 3 clubs. If i was choosing today i would go 221 (p-4/5 iron and 225 3 iron). Because i like the way it looks better. Performance wise i couldn’t separate them. The benefit to having this model is giving us the option of how we build our bags
Thanks again for the detailed review. It's interesting that you are the only channel thus far to do a detailed review of this club. Question: you say it's basically a blade, but isn't this 923 Tour more of a cavity back than a blade?
It's the smallest cavity in the world 😊 well that's a touch unfair, so the JPX tech is still in the Tour head yet obviously due to the size of the head, the actual gain is the smallest of all the 923 range, however it still makes a small difference over the blade... 👍
The radar systems will always read higher efficiency of smash factor due to the later point of capture. Quad reads from the moment of touch where Radar reads from the point of maximum compression so the ball has taken a little of the velocity out of the head, so therefore reads ball speed the same but head speed slightly less than true at the point of touch so gives a higher smash factor 👍🏻
Love my MP 18 split set🥰 P-8 MB's 7-4 SC's In my opinion, this 923 must be a MP222, because the step between 221 and 223 is to big and the 223 from 7-4...chrommoly🙄
Depends on strike consistency and the golfers launch needs. I never try and put a handicap number on any club due to the very individualistic way golf is. Any good fitter/coach will be able to see the golfers own tenancies and guide the nest club option. Anyone giving an absolute opinion on choice without first seeing them is either just trying to "sell" something or doesn't know what they are going on about 👍
Would you say the sweet spot of 923 tour in the middle of the face (like other cavity irons such as 923 forged or 223 pro)? Or is it more toward the heel?
@askgolfnut What do you think of turf interaction compared to 221? Seems like there is more bounce, my Mp-64 really biting when its slightly softer than usual.
I know I’m late to the party, but between these and the ping i59 which one would you go with? Which one do you feel is easier to hit with more forgiveness?
It definitely was a very popular model.... Shame Mizuno doesn't continue to produce heads, although that would be very costly. I've said to many people (that can afford it), if they feel they have found the irons that they'd love to stick with for a long time, buy 2 sets and keep a set to replace the old 5 go 10 years after the heads have been discontinued 😊👍
It's due to gapping. When list comes off, defection doesn't necessarily work in a linear way thus if they reduced it in even decrements the long iron gapping would be too long 👍
I'd say for most golfers too much distance is long iron gapping is a good thing rather than bad. Majority of shots are hit with irons between 140-160 according to some of the stats guys, think ping spoke about it on the sweet spot podcast based on arcoss data. Have tighter gapping in short clubs and wider gapping in long clubs therefore. Get a few options of trajectory and land angle in the 140-165 range. I.e. have a chippy low peak height 140 carry 7 iron and a high peak height full 9 iron 140 carry etc etc depending on wind /elevation /pin /green softness etc
My main complaint with this iron is the white paint fill. I wish I could got no paint fill or black paint fill. Very minor criticism for an otherwise amazing club.
I know quite a few people over the years have personalised paint jobs on Mizuno irons, so you're desired colour might only be a pot of acrylic paint away from perfect 👌
I've owned 921 Tour and 225. 921T felt better and was more forgiving for me. Never owned a traditional MP so I can't compare there. I now play ZX7, feel is just as good as 921T and ZX7 is a bit more forgiving. I've also played AP2, T100 and PXG and I think ZX7 and 921T have the best feel of the bunch.
223 make it look like you are scared of 221...it's the second most forgiving in that range...if you go JPX range...you are playing their least forgiving iron, that makes you a playa.... Or something like that...
@brandonarchibald8180 you’d go JPX Tour to get full 1025E carbon steel construction throughout the set. 223 and JPX Forged are chromoly 4i to 7i. And JPX Tour have more traditional loft gaps than 223 or JPX Forged.

Very much so, it's one of only 2 sets in the range set at traditional lofts, the other being the full on 221 blade. 👍
